Deficits in language comprehension and production have been repeatedly observed in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD). However, the characterization of the language profile of this population is far from complete, and the relationship between language deficits, impaired thinking and cognitive functions is widely debated.

The aims of the present study were to assess production and comprehension of verbs with different argument structures, as well as production and comprehension of sentences with canonical and non-canonical word order in people with SSD. In addition, the study investigated the relationship between language deficits and cognitive functions.

Thirty-four participants with a diagnosis of SSD and a group of healthy control participants (HC) were recruited and evaluated using the Italian version of the Northwestern Assessment of Verbs and Sentences (NAVS, Cho-Reyes & Thompson, 2012; Barbieri etal., 2019).

Results showed that participants with SSD were impaired - compared to HC - on boessment tools may be able to capture language deficits in this population.
Our findings support the hypothesis that language deficits in SSD may be one aspect of a more generalized, multi-domain, cognitive impairment, and are consistent with previous findings pointing to reduced inter- and intra-hemispheric connectivity as a possible substrate for such deficits. The study provides a systematic characterization of lexical and syntactic deficits in SSD and demonstrates that psycholinguistically-based assessment tools may be able to capture language deficits in this population.The surface charge of calcite in aqueous environments is essential to many industrial and environmental applications. Electrokinetic measurements are usually used to assess the calcite charging behavior and characterize its electrical double layer (EDL). Numerous surface complexation models (SCMs) have been proposed to interpret the effect of different surface interactions on the zeta potential. Because of their versatility, SCMs have also become important tools in reactive transport modeling. The research on enhanced oil recovery within the last decade has led to an increased number of publications reporting both zeta potential measurements and SCMs for calcite. Nonetheless, the measurements are often inconsistent and the reasons for choosing one model over another are unclear. In this work, we review the models proposed for calcite and address their main differences. We first collect a large number of published zeta potential measurements and then we fit a Diffuse Layer, Basic Stern, and Charge-Distributionbehavior prevail as main challenges for reactive transport modeling.Lead-210 from natural atmospheric fallout is widely used in multidisciplinary studies to date recent sediments. This work is aimed at assessing the effects on SAR and A0 of model errors in the CRS, CS, PLUM and TERESA dating models, due to random variability in 210Pb fluxes, which is a usual sedimentary condition. Synthetic cores are used as virtual laboratories for this goal. Independently of the model choice, SARs are largely affected by model errors, resulting in some large and spurious deviations from the true values. This questions their general use for tracking past environmental changes. A0 are less sensitive to model errors and their trends of change with time may reflect real changes in sedimentary conditions, as it is shown with some real cores from varved sediments.
Humans are continuously exposed to stressful challenges in everyday life. Such stressful events trigger a complex physiological reaction - the fight-or-flight response - that can hamper flexible decision-making and learning. Inspired by key neural and peripheral characteristics of the fight-or-flight response, here, we ask whether acute stress changes how humans learn about costs and benefits.

Healthy adults were randomly exposed to an acute stress (age mean=23.48, 21/40 female) or no-stress control (age mean=23.80, 22/40 female) condition, after which they completed a reinforcement learning task in which they minimize cost (physical effort) and maximize benefits (monetary rewards). During the task pupillometry data were collected. A computational model of cost-benefit reinforcement learning was employed to investigate the effect of acute stress on cost and benefit learning and decision-making.

Acute stress improved learning to maximize rewards relative to minimizing physical effort (Condition-by-Trial reward value versus action cost, thereby providing new insights into learning strategies under acute stress, which, depending on the context, may be maladaptive or beneficial. Due to the highly diverse and heavily loaded chemical matrix of fire debris samples, combined with the broad chemical composition of IL, the interpretation of the laboratory analysis results is a very challenging task for the forensic examiner. Fire debris samples are commonly analyzed using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This method delivers both the total ion chromatogram (TIC) with the individually separated compounds and the underlying mass spectrum of each of the separated compounds. In this study, a completely new approach for the recognition of gasoline in fire debris samples is presented. First, the GC-MS data, including retention time, signal intensity, and mass spectrum is converted into a bitmap image. Five different data-to-image conversion approaches are tested, and their advantages and limitations are discussed. Subsequently, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is utilized to allocate the generated images to the classes "with gasoline" or "without gasoline". The applied approaches to generate a digital image and the pattern recognition of the CNN perform very well in the classification of unknown test samples. Depending on the data-to-image generation approach used, the rate of correct sample classification in the test dataset is between 95% and 98%. The machine learning approach in this study, as well as the complementary method presented in an accompanying article, are not only useful for the recognition of gasoline in fire debris but are equally applicable to any additional areas in which the interpretation of complex chromatographic and mass spectrometric is required.Combination therapy is a promising strategy for treating multidrug-resistant (MDR) cancers. Macromolecules such as antibodies and RNAs have been successfully used for targeted therapy owing to their high specificity. Designing drug delivery systems capable of co-administering macromolecules is therefore crucial for advancing them as therapeutics for combination therapy. Herein, by using glutathione (GSH)-responsive biodegradable silica nanocapsules (BS-NPs), we report for the first time a highly versatile nanomaterial-based strategy for co-encapsulation and intracellular co-delivery of different combinations of macromolecules (i.e., siRNA/protein, siRNA/antibody and protein/antibody). This strategy was successfully used in the intracellular co-delivery of siRNA/Cetuximab (also named Erbitux™) for combination therapy in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-overexpressing cancer cells. Here, we designed a highly adhesion-strength dry polyacrylic acid (PAA)-chitosan (CHI)-ALA interpenetrating network hydrogel (PACA) patch after investigating the spatiotemporal dynamics of ALA drug delivery via diffusion-based finite-element models. The PACA patch could adhere to the moist oral mucosa fast and stably and deliver ALA. PACA hydrogel-mediated PDT (PACA-PDT) effectively improved OPMDs in vitro and in a hamster oral carcinogenesis model. In particular, we conducted a trial to recruit 60 OPMD volunteers to demonstrate the feasibility and comfort of the PACA hydrogel patch. This study provides evidence that PACA hydrogel-mediated PDT could be a patient-friendly treatment modality for OPMDs.

The present research is designed with the aim of assessing changes in nasal resistance, nasal airflow and quality of life in pediatric patients undergoing turbinate radiofrequency ablation.

A prospective uncontrolled intervention clinical trial design was followed. Children between 4 and 15 years old undergoing turbinate radiodiofrequency ablation (TRA) were consecutively selected. Children were examined preoperatively and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after turbinate surgery.
