How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause a car key to not function properly. Wait a while before replacing it.
When your car keys break it's a huge trouble. It always occurs at the worst time! There are a few ways you can repair the broken car key that won't require an entirely new one.
Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs allow us to open doors, trunks and tailgates without having to fumble around for a physical key. Some key fobs have a built-in key that can be used to start cars. The fobs are powered by a tiny battery. If the battery dies, then the key fob can no longer transmit the signal needed to turn on the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to fix a dead vehicle key fob.
First, you must determine the condition of the key fob to determine if it's really dead. If it appears to be, then you'll need to replace the battery. You can do this yourself by taking the fob off its clip, or by using a flat-head screwdriver. Be cautious not to put too much pressure on the fob or you may end up damaging the fob. You should also make sure that you're using the correct type of battery. Most key fobs use CR2032 3-Volt batteries, but certain models may require a different type of battery. You can determine what type of battery your car needs in the owner's manual, or you can go to an Interstate All Battery Center and have a battery specialist help you.
If the key fob isn't actually dead, you may be able to revive it by moving closer to your vehicle. Since the majority of key fobs are RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only function at a short distance and need to be near enough to allow the ignition system to be able to recognize the signal. If you can move a few inches closer to your car, it might unlock or even start it.
Many car manufacturers have a backup mechanism that is activated when the battery of the key fob is dead. Ford, for example has a slot which is dedicated to the key fob. When inserted correctly the key fob will activate the car's engine. There are instructions in the owner's manual of how to locate the slot and insert the key fob in the correct way. If you're unable to start the car using this method, you should contact roadside assistance.
Broken Key Ring
The key fob's internal chip is the one that communicates with the car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. car key remote repair near me could be damaged or there could be programming errors. If this occurs the key fob won't be able to transmit the correct identification code and your car won't begin. In certain instances, a faulty transponder key may also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear on the key shell or contact pads.
Usually when a key fob starts to have trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle there will be specific warning indicators on the dashboard. These may include error messages, flashing lights or the key not locking the vehicle. If you are noticing any of these warnings, call your local locksmith right away to repair your key fob or replacement.
It is very easy to damage your key ring when you put too excessive pressure on it, especially when carrying a lot of keys. This could cause the fob to split in half. This is among the main causes of broken car keys. It is possible to apply super glue on both sides of the crack and gently press them together to repair the issue. Use a gel-type of glue that dries slowly in order to avoid drips or runniness.
If this method does not work, it is important to get in touch with an experienced locksmith immediately in order to prevent further damage to your car. A locksmith who is certified can replace or repair your fob quickly and will make sure that the ignition and door locks are not damaged during the process.
It can be very frustrating when your key fob gets damaged. However, it's not a reason to panic or become frustrated. Instead, you can take proactive steps to minimize the chance of your key fob breaking again in the future. This includes regular maintenance, using key protectors and keeping a spare key. Quicksmith's staff is on hand to assist you in the event that your key fob breaks.
Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs is broken off the tiny key loop at the top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It's made of soft metal or plastic. I've drilled the hole and wet-sanded the area to make it stronger. But I'm guessing that's not helping.
I've also tried wrapping the broken portion of the ring in clear tape, but that doesn't seem to do much good. It's really a shame as I use the little ring to hold my keys in place on the mini-split ring which holds the larger split ring for the other keyfobs.
If the case of the key fob is damaged, you could often open it up and replace the battery if the battery isn't already dead. There are online kits for this, however they typically only provide temporary fixes - it might be better to bring it to a professional who will swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. You may also be able to find the replacement case at an home improvement store or locksmith. These cases aren't as costly as the new key fob.
