Eye movement density (EMD) is an evaluation index of rapid eye movements observed during sleep. This study aimed to investigate the association of fetal EMD with sleeping and developmental problems in infancy. We observed 60 normal singleton pregnancies (gestational age 28-37 weeks) using ultrasonography for 1 h. Fetal eye movements were counted, and EMD was calculated. Participants answered questionnaires regarding their child's sleep and development 1.5 years after their delivery. The outcomes of an infant's sleep were night awakening (yes or no), bedtime (before or after 2200), and nighttime sleep duration ( less then 9 or ≥ 9 h). An infant's development was evaluated using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) T-score. We found that decreased fetal EMD was associated with increased night awakening at the age of 1.5 years (odds ratio 0.84, 95% confidence interval 0.69-1.00 per unit decrease in EMD). However, fetal EMD was not associated with bedtime or nighttime sleep duration. In addition, fetal EMD was independently associated with the total problems T-score of the CBCL at the age of 1.5 years in the multivariate model (p = 0.047). In conclusion, fetal EMD may be associated with sleep and developmental problems in infants.Minerals are widely proposed to protect organic carbon from degradation and thus promote the persistence of organic carbon in soils and sediments, yet a direct link between mineral adsorption and retardation of microbial remineralisation is often presumed and a mechanistic understanding of the protective preservation hypothesis is lacking. We find that methylamines, the major substrates for cryptic methane production in marine surface sediment, are strongly adsorbed by marine sediment clays, and that this adsorption significantly reduces their concentrations in the dissolved pool (up to 40.2 ± 0.2%). Moreover, the presence of clay minerals slows methane production and reduces final methane produced (up to 24.9 ± 0.3%) by a typical methylotrophic methanogen-Methanococcoides methylutens TMA-10. Near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy shows that reversible adsorption and occlusive protection of methylamines in clay interlayers are responsible for the slow-down and reduction in methane production. see more Here we show that mineral-OC interactions strongly control methylotrophic methanogenesis and potentially cryptic methane cycling in marine surface sediments.Ultrafiltration (UF) as a widely used industrial separation method with optimal selection of membrane materials can be applied to extract rare earth metals from dilute solutions formed during the processing of electronic waste by hydrometallurgical methods. In the present work, promising UF copolyimide membranes were prepared using [hmim][TCB] ionic liquid (IL) co-solvent which can be considered as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvents. The membranes were characterized by ATR-FTIR, TGA, SEM and quantum chemical calculations. A significant difference in morphology of these membranes was revealed by SEM of membrane cross-sections; the P84 membrane has finger-like structure of porous substrate in contrast to spongy structure of substrate for the P84/IL membrane due to a higher dynamic viscosity of the casting solution. The transport parameters were determined in ultrafiltration tests with pure water and an aqueous solution of bovine serum albumin. The addition of ionic liquid to the P84 casting solution increases the performance of the membrane. The rejection capacity was evaluated with respect to La3+ in the form of a lanthanum alizarin complex (LAC) in aqueous acetone solution. The P84 membrane prepared using IL showed a high rejection (98.5%) with respect to LAC, as well as a significant productivity.Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a neurological complication that frequently occurs during chemotherapeutic intervention, resulting in damaged myelin sheath, motor weakness and/or sensory impairment. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic efficiency of low-intensity pulsed low-frequency ultrasound on cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy. Rats were randomly divided into five experimental groups as control, cisplatin administration, 10 mg/kg melatonin treatment after cisplatin administration, 1 MHz frequency 0.5 W/cm2 pulsed ultrasound treatment after cisplatin administration and 1 MHz frequency 1.5 W/cm2 pulsed ultrasound treatment after cisplatin administration. Chemical neuropathy was induced by the injection of 3 mg/kg/week of cisplatin (i.p.) for 5 weeks. Afterwards, melatonin and pulsed ultrasound treatments were applied for 15 consecutive days. Cisplatin administration resulted in a decrease in nociceptive pain perception and nerve conduction velocities together with a decrease in myelin thickness and diameters of axons and myelinated fibers, indicating a dysfunction and degeneration in sciatic nerves. In addition, cisplatin administration led to a decrease, in superoxide dismutase activity, and an increase in malondialdehyde and IL-1β levels together with an increase in caspase-3 protein expression levels and a decrease in Bcl-2 and Parkin levels. The ultrasound treatments resulted in an increase in nociceptive pain perception and sciatic nerve conduction; led to a decrease in oxidative stress and inflammation, restored nerve degeneration and regulated apoptosis and mitophagy. Taken together, low-intensity pulsed low-frequency ultrasound was efficient in restoring the alterations attributable to cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy, and warrants further investigations.The human mu rhythm has been suggested to represent an important function in information processing. Rodent homologue rhythms have been assumed though no study has investigated them from the cognitive aspect yet. As voluntary goal-directed movements induce the desynchronization of mu rhythm, we aimed at exploring whether the response-related brain activity during the touchscreen visual discrimination (VD) task is suitable to detect sensorimotor rhythms and their change under cognitive impairment. Different doses of scopolamine or MK-801 were injected subcutaneously to rats, and epidural electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded during task performance. Arciform ~ 10 Hz oscillations appeared during visual processing, then two characteristic alpha/beta desynchronization-resynchronization patterns emerged mainly above the sensorimotor areas, serving presumably different motor functions. Beyond causing cognitive impairment, both drugs supressed the touch-related upper alpha (10-15 Hz) reactivity for desynchronization. Reaction time predominantly correlated positively with movement-related alpha and beta power both in normal and impaired conditions. These results support the existence of a mu homologue rodent rhythm whose upper alpha component appeared to be modulated by cholinergic and glutamatergic mechanisms and its power change might indicate a potential EEG correlate of processing speed. The VD task can be utilized for the investigation of sensorimotor rhythms in rats.Bioethanol produced from lignocellulosic biomass is regarded as a clean and sustainable energy source. The recalcitrant structure of lignocellulose is a major drawback to affordable bioethanol production from plant biomass. In this study, a novel endo-1,4-xylanase, named Xyn-2, from the camel rumen metagenome, was characterized and evaluated for hydrolysis of agricultural wastes. The enzyme was identified as a psychrohalophilic xylanase with maximum activity at 20 °C, keeping 58% of the activity at 0 °C, and exhibiting twice as much activity in 0.5-4 M NaCl concentrations. Xyn-2 was able to hydrolyze wheat bran (100%), sunflower-seed shell (70%), wheat straw (56%), rice straw (56%), and rice bran (41%), in the relative order of efficiency. Besides, the ethanologenic B. subtilis AP was evaluated without and with Xyn-2 for bioethanol production from wheat bran. The strain was able to produce 5.5 g/L ethanol with a yield of 22.6% in consolidated bioprocessing (CBP). The contribution of Xyn-2 to ethanol production of B. subtilis AP was studied in an SSF system (simultaneous saccharification and fermentation) giving rise to a significant increase in ethanol production (p ≤ 0.001) to a final concentration of 7.3 g/L with a yield of 26.8%. The results revealed that the camel rumen metagenome might be an invaluable source of novel xylanolytic enzymes with potential application in lignocellulosic biomass valorization. At the same time, the results suggest that B. subtilis with a diverse carbon-source preference and sophisticated systems for production and secretion of enzymes might be a promising candidate for strain development for bioethanol production from plant biomass. It might be assumed that the fortification of B. subtilis enzymatic arsenal with select xylanolytic enzymes from camel rumen metagenome may have a great impact on bioethanol production.The carbon sequestration function of the ecosystem is one of the most important functions of ecosystem service, and it of great significance to study the spatio-temporal differentiation of carbon storage for promoting regional sustainable development. Ecosystems on the Western Sichuan Plateau are highly variable, but its spatio-temporal differentiation and driving factors are not yet clear. In this study, on the basis of land use monitoring data, meteorological and demographic data interpreted from Landsat remote sensing image, and through GIS analysis tools, the carbon storage module of InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs) model was used to estimate carbon storage and geodetector was used to detect the driving factors of carbon storage spatial differentiation. The results show that (1) The carbon storage increased to 1.2455 × 1010 t from 1.2438 × 1010 t in the past 20 years, the ecosystem developed in a healthy way overall. (2) Carbon storage show High-High and Low-Low aggregation characteristics, but the area decreased by 1481.81 km2 and 311.11 km2 respectively, and the spatial cluster effect gradually weakened. (3) HAI is the leading factor causing the spatio-temporal differentiation of regional carbon storage, followed by temperature and NDVI; the interaction between factors significantly enhances the spatial differentiation of carbon storage, indicating that the change of carbon storage is the result of the joint action of natural and socioeconomic factors. The results of the study provide some theoretical basis for the development of differentiated ecological regulation models and strategies, and help to promote high-quality regional development.Food waste and obesity and overweight conditions are both linked to the unsustainability of current food systems. This article argues that overnutrition should be considered a form of food waste and it provides a first estimation of the quantity of food over-consumed in Italy. This is done by calculating the excess calories consumed by obese and overweight people and converting them into food quantities by comparison with a typical Italian diet. The total quantity of food consumed in excess by Italian citizens due to overnutrition is calculated as 1.553 million tonnes per year, which is comparable to the current national household food waste assessments. The environmental impact arising from production and consumption of this food accounts for 6.15 Mt of CO2-eq per year, as estimated by a Life Cycle Analysis conducted on the 46 food categories which compose the typical Italian diet.
