The wide use of copper is limited by its rapid oxidation. Main oxidation mitigation approaches involve alloying or surface passivation technologies. However, surface alloying often modifies the physical properties of copper, while surface passivation is characterized by limited thermal and chemical stability. Herein, we demonstrate an electrochemical approach for surface-anchoring of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) nanolayer on a copper electrode by electro-deposition of alkyne-functionalized imidazolium cations. Water reduction reaction generated a high concentration of hydroxide ions that induced deprotonation of imidazolium cations and self-assembly of NHCs on the copper electrode. In addition, alkyne group deprotonation enabled on-surface polymerization by coupling surface-anchored and solvated NHCs, which resulted in a 2 nm thick NHC-nanolayer. Copper film coated with a NHC-nanolayer demonstrated high oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures and under alkaline conditions.
Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is one of the mechanical complications of acute myocardial infarction (MI), whose incidence has been decreasing throughout the years because of the emergence of different reperfusion therapy strategies.
We present a series of seven patients who underwent surgery for post-MI VSD repair in our institution in the period between March 2020 and June 2021.
During the recent SARS-COV2 pandemic, time to hospital admission increased due to patients being overcautious out of fear of exposing themselves to COVID-19. The increased time to hospital admission, with associated late reperfusion therapy and delayed PCI, is closely related to an augmented incidence of post-myocardial infarction mechanical complications such as ventricular septal defects. For this reason, we witnessed an increase in the incidence of post-MI VSD.
Fear of exposure to SARS-COV2 in the medical environment was a major source of concern for all our patients. HC-030031 in vitro The target of hospital policy should be to reassure patients of freedom from COVID in the emergency department and cardiac wards in order to prevent such dreadful complications.

Previous studies have reported that PSO exerts numerous pharmacological bioactivities including antitumor. The present study aimed to investigate its anticancer effect using colon cancer cells. Cultured HT-29 and HCT-116 colon cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of PSO, and the cell viability, the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), the protein expression, and the apoptosis were determined by MTT assay, DCFH2 -DA fluorescence probe, Western blotting, and Annexin V/7-AAD staining, respectively. The activities of caspase 3/7 were determined by a commercial kit. Our study found that PSO effectively induces apoptotic cell death mediated by caspase 3/7 in HT-29 and HCT-116 colon cancer cells. PSO treatment rapidly boosts the ROS generation, which is responsible for the PSO-triggered DNA damage, mitochondria membrane potential decrease and caspase 3/7 activation, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1/2 activation. Collectively, these results showed that PSO triggered oxidative damage mediated apoptosis in colon cancer cells.
To evaluate the oncologic and obstetric outcomes of cervical conization followed by pelvic lymphadenectomy, which is used as a fertility-sparing procedure, in reproductive-aged patients with early-stage cervical cancer.
We performed a retrospective study of patients with stage IA1-IB1 cervical cancer who underwent cervical conization followed by pelvic lymphadenectomy from 2011 to 2020 at Kumamoto University Hospital.
In total, eight patients underwent conization followed by pelvic lymphadenectomy. The median age of the patients was 33 (range 28-36) years. Four (50.0%) patients were nulliparous. Seven (87.5%) patients were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (87.5%) and one (12.5%) with adenocarcinoma. Five (62.5%), two (25.0%), and one (12.5%) presented with stage IA1, IA2, and IB1 disease, respectively. Five (62.5%) patients had lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) based on the assessment of specimens obtained via conization. However, none had lymph node metastasis based on pelvic lymphadenectomy. ens will contribute to decision-making regarding the use of this fertility-sparing procedure.Formononetin (FMN) has been reported as a prospective antiosteoporotic medication. However, the antiosteoporotic properties of FMN are still unclear in a mouse model with diabetes-induced osteoporosis. An osteoporotic or osteopenic mouse model with type I diabetes mellitus (T1DM) was established using streptozotocin (40 mg/kg) injection for 5 consecutive days. After 12 weeks with FMN intragastric administration (0.5, 5, 20 mg/kg), the antiosteoporotic activity of FMN was evaluated in T1DM mice. FMN supplementation effectively improves Ca excretion and trabecular bone degeneration and impedes osteoclast differentiation and function to attenuate hyperglycemia-induced bone deterioration. In addition, FMN inhibited activating protein 1 (AP-1) and osteoclast-specific gene expression, Nfatc1, Ctsk, and TRAP. The administration of FMN has a beneficial effect to attenuate hyperglycemia-induced bone deteriorations, including osteoclastogenesis, trabecular bone, and Ca loss. Our study provided a prospective medication for the treatment of T1DM-related osteopenia or osteoporosis with FMN.
Constant exposure of health professionals to the pain and suffering of patients can adversely affect their emotional wellbeing.
The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and the factors affecting the levels of secondary traumatic stress/compassion fatigue (STS/CF), burnout (BO) and compassion satisfaction (CS) of health professionals working in adult and paediatric Intensive Care Units (ICU) as well as in departments treating patients with serious illness in five hospitals in Crete.
A descriptive cross-sectional survey with the use of the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL-CSF-R-IV) questionnaire.
We enrolled medical, nursing and support staff working in the adult and paediatric ICU, emergency, oncology, haematology and neurosurgical departments, haemodialysis unit and operating theatre.
598 health professionals completed the questionnaire (response rate 73.2%). Significantly increased levels of STS/CF were observed in non - ICU as compared to ICU staff (p=.009) females compared to malese to provide appropriate support.
Health professionals need to be informed about the risks of projecting patients' suffering on themselves. Hospital managers and department heads are responsible to provide appropriate support.
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was previously associated with psychopathological symptoms. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying these associations are largely unexplored. Previous studies suggested associations between metacognitive abilities (e.g., mastery) and symptomatology, which may have impacts on COVID-19 perceptions. This study aims to explore, using path analysis, the mediational role of Critical Distance (differentiation and decentration abilities) and Mastery on the relationships between COVID-19 perceptions and psychological well-being and distress.
In a cross-sectional design, 227 participants (M =34.21, SD = 10.9) filled self-report questionnaires.
Metacognitive abilities were negatively correlated with psychopathological symptoms. Both Critical Distance and Mastery mediated the path from COVID-19 perceived severity and anxiety to psychological distress and well-being. Critical Distance seems to augment Mastery which tends to increase psychological well-being and limited psychological distress.
Metacognition seems to play a mediational role on the relationship between COVID-19 perceptions and mental health. Clinical psychologists and psychotherapists may enhance psychological interventions regarding COVID-19 psychopathological symptomatology by working on metacognitive Critical Distance and Mastery abilities.

Mast cells show close apposition to sensory nerves and release bioactive substances in response to varied stimuli including infection, stress, and other neuroendocrine factors. Most studies focus on patients who develop IBS after enteric infection or who report diarrhea-predominant symptoms. Three topics underlying IBS pathogenesis have been emphasized in recent investigations. Visceral hypersensitivity to luminal stimulation is found in most IBS patients and may contribute to abdominal pain. Mast cell dysfunction also may disrupt epithelial barrier function which alters mucosal permeability potentially leading to altered bowel function and pain. Mast cell products including histamine, proteases, prostaglandins, and cytokines may participate in hypersensitivity and permeability defects, especially with diarrhea-predominant IBS. Recent experimental evidence indicates that the pronociceptive effects of histamine and proteases are mediated by the generation of prostaglandins in the mast cell. Enteric microbiome interactions including increased mucosal bacterial translocation may activate mast cells to elicit inflammatory responses underlying some of these pathogenic effects. Therapies to alter mast cell activity (mast cell stabilizers) or function (histamine antagonists) have shown modest benefits in IBS. Future investigations will seek to define patient subsets with greater potential to respond to therapies that address visceral hypersensitivity, epithelial permeability defects, and microbiome alterations secondary to mast cell dysfunction in IBS.Gastric cancer (GC) is a highly heterogeneous malignancy, characterized by high mortality and poor prognosis. Ferroptosis is a newly defined nonapoptotic programmed cell death mechanism that has been implicated in the development of various pathological conditions. We aimed to identify ferroptosis-related long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) that might be used to predict GC prognosis. The data were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Two subtypes, C1 and C2, were identified, which had significant variations in prognosis and immune cell infiltrations. Differentially expressed genes between the subtypes were found to be involved in multiple tumor-associated pathways. Subsequently, a training dataset and a testing dataset were created from the TCGA dataset. A predictive model for GC patients based on six ferroptosis-related lncRNAs (including STX18-AS1, MIR99AHG, LINC01197, LINC00968, LINC00865, and LEF1-AS1) was developed. The model could stratify patients into a high- and low-risk group, showing good predictive performance.
