This study presents a pioneering examination of physical and mental health disparities in an Israeli sample of middle-aged and older gay and heterosexual men. These results may call the attention of clinicians and policymakers to both vulnerabilities and strengths of middle-aged and older gay men.Three undescribed dihydrostilbene glycosides, 3,5-dihydroxyldihydrostilbene 4'-O-[6''-O-(4'''-hydroxylbenzoyl)]-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), 3,5-dihydroxyldihydrostilbene 4'-O-(6''-O-galloyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), and 3,5-dihydroxyldihydrostilbene 4'-O-[6''-O-(3''',4'''-dimethoxyl)galloyl]-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), and seven known compounds, kaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), isoquercitrin (5), kaempferol 3-O-α-L-rhamnoside (6), quercitrin (7), (6S,9R)-roseoside (8), (-)-epicatechin 3-O-gallate (9), and (-)-epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate (10) have been isolated from the methanol extract of the leaves of Camellia sinensis var. assamica (J.W.Mast.) Kitam. (synnonym of Camellia assamica (Mast.) H.T.Chang) (Theaceae). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (1 D-, 2 D-NMR) and mass spectra. All compounds were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against human oral cancer (CAL27) and human breast cancer (MDAMB231) cell lines. Compound 10 showed significant cytotoxic activity against CAL27 and MDAMB231 cell lines with IC50 values of 9.78 ± 0.25 and 3.27 ± 0.18 μM, respectively, compared to those of positive control, capecitabine (IC50 values of 8.20 ± 0.75 and 5.20 ± 0.89 μM).Fixed beam structures are widely used in engineering, and a common problem is determining the load conditions of these structures resulting from impact loads. In this study, a method for accurately identifying the location and magnitude of the load causing plastic deformation of a fixed beam using a backpropagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN). First, a load of known location and magnitude is applied to the finite element model of a fixed beam to create plastic deformation, and a polynomial expression is used to fit the resulting deformed shape. A basic data set was established through this method for a series of calculations, and it consists of the location and magnitude of the applied load and polynomial coefficients. Then, a BP-ANN model for expanding the sample data is established and the sample set is expanded to solve the common problem of insufficient samples. Finally, using the extended sample set as training data, the coefficients of the polynomial function describing the plastic deformation of the fixed beam are used as input data, the position and magnitude of the load are used as output data, a BP-ANN prediction model is established. The prediction results are compared with the results of finite element analysis to verify the effectiveness of the method.Bioassay-guided isolation from acetone extract of the roots of Artemisia pallens Wall yielded two spiro compounds (1 and 2). The structures of these compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic techniques such as IR, MS, 1 D and 2 D- NMR. The acetone extract, fractions and the isolated two compounds were investigated for their antibacterial activity against two gram negative (E. coli, P. aeruginosa) and two gram positive (S. aureus, B. subtilis) bacterial strains. Compound (2) showed the best spectra of activity with IC50 and MIC values between 2.48-3.08 and 12.78 - 21.77 µM and Compound (1) with 2.57-3.69 and 38.17 - 80.57 µM, respectively, for the four bacterial strains, whereas inactive against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Molecular docking study could further help in understanding the various interactions between these compounds and DNA gyrase active site in detail and thereby could provide valuable insight into the mechanism of action.Batch-fed horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetlands (HssFCW) were developed to compare the potential of Canna indica and Oryza sativa L. in removing heavy metals and nutrients from piggery effluent. Piggery effluent samples were characterized for nutrients (N and P) and metals (Mg, Al, Ca and Fe) before and after introducing them to the HssFCW with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 days and operational flowrate of 0.014 m3/day. Three sets of constructed wetlands (CWs) were monitored during the dry season for 3 months. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) for the plants were evaluated. The results were all significantly different at p ≤ 0.05. O. sativa L removes more nutrients and metals than C. indica. The BCF for O. sativa L. was higher than for C. indica, while the TF for C. indica was higher for O. sativa L., indicating a higher metal translocation potential. Use of C. indica, a non-food crop, poses no health risks in HssFCWs whereas the grains of O. sativa L. are consumed directly by humans, presenting potential risks when used in HssFCWs. Compared to an annual O. sativa L., the perennial C. indica can be grown continuously in CWs for the phytoremediation of piggery effluent. Novelty statementNo known work about the phytoremediation potential of the two studied macrophytes in the agro-ecological zone is known. The study also provides insight into the bioconcentration of metals in the edible part of Oryza sativa L. FARO 44 (SIPI 692033).The characterization of piggery effluent revealed that its compositions were above the allowable limit for reuse and recycling despite the adoption of low-water use intensive method. The study showed that Oryza sativa L accumulates more metals in the above-ground tissues than in its root and provide insight into its use as a phytoremediation plant in the study area. The footprint of pollutants and metals in Oryza sativa L makes a perennial C. indica more suitable than O. sativa L. in piggery effluent phytoremediation. Background This study aims to describe TBI-related hospitalizations for the whole population and identify factors associated with in-hospital mortality among elderly (≥65 years) patients hospitalized with TBI in Texas. Methods Using Texas Hospital Discharge Data from 2012 to 2014, TBI-related hospitalizations were identified using International Classification of Diseases - Ninth Revision - Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes. Rates for age and gender were estimated using U.S. Census data. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify factors associated with in-hospital mortality among those aged at least 65 years. Results There were 51,419 TBI-related hospitalizations from 2012 to 2014 in Texas. Falls were the leading cause of TBI-related hospitalizations 6235 (36.64%), 6595 (38.40%), and 5412 (37.59%) for 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. Males had higher rates of hospitalizations while rates were highest for those above 80 years of age. Compared to Whites, Hispanics had 1.18 higher adjusted odds of in-hospital mortality [OR = 1.18 95% CI (1.01-1.40)]. Similarly, adjusted odds of in-hospital mortality were higher among males [OR = 1.55 95% CI (1.36-1.77)].Conclusion This study provided evidence of demographic disparities in the burden and outcome of TBI in Texas, findings could serve as a foundation for targeted TBI prevention interventions.Liver diseases are considered global health problems that cause more than 1 million deaths each year. Due to the increase in the prevalence of liver diseases worldwide, studies on different treatment methods have increased. Some of these methods is diagnostic and therapeutic applications based on the examination of the intestinal and intestinal microbiota. In this study, research articles, systematic review and review in the literature were examined in order to determine gut-liver axis relationship and treatment methods for liver diseases with gut modulation methods. Studies related to the subject have been searched in Google Scholar and Pubmed databases. The keywords "liver disease" and "gut-liver axis" and "microbiota" and "gut modulation methods" or "probiotic" or "prebiotic" or "symbiotic" or "antibiotic" or "bile acid regulation" or "adsorbent" or "fecal microbiota transplantation" were used in the searches. Improvements have been achieved in biomarkers of liver diseases by providing intestinal modulation with probiotic, prebiotic, symbiotic, antibiotic and adsorbents applications, bile acid regulation and fecal microbiota transplantation. In the results of experimental and clinical studies, it was seen that the therapeutic potential of the treatments performed by applying probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics was higher.Hearing aids classify acoustic environments into multiple, generic classes for the purposes of guiding signal processing. Information about environmental classification is made available to the clinician for fitting, counseling, and troubleshooting purposes. The goal of this study was to better inform scientists and clinicians about the nature of that information by comparing the classification schemes among five premium hearing instruments in a wide range of acoustic scenes including those that vary in signal-to-noise ratio and overall level (dB SPL). Twenty-eight acoustic scenes representing various prototypical environments were presented to five premium devices mounted on an acoustic manikin. Classification measures were recorded from the brand-specific fitting software then recategorized to generic labels to conceal the device company, including (a) Speech in Quiet, (b) Speech in Noise, (c) Noise, and (d) Music. Twelve normal-hearing listeners also classified each scene. The results revealed a variety of similarities and differences among the five devices and the human subjects. Where some devices were highly dependent on input overall level, others were influenced markedly by signal-to-noise ratio. Differences between human and hearing aid classification were evident for several speech and music scenes. Environmental classification is the heart of the signal processing strategy for any given device, providing key input to subsequent decision-making. Comprehensive assessment of environmental classification is essential when considering the cost of signal processing errors, the potential impact for typical wearers, and the information that is available for use by clinicians. The magnitude of differences among devices is remarkable and to be noted.Monoterpene Perillaldehyde (PAE) is a major component of the essential oil extracted from perilla plants (Perilla frutescens), which has been used as a leafy vegetable and a medicinal agent. PAE has gained a lot of attention in recent years because of its antifungal and other microbial activities and, human health benefits. PAE has also been used as food additives, perfume ingredients, and traditional medicine concoctions. Biological analyses of PAE have revealed that it has good antioxidant activities and can serve as organic fruit and food preservative. Animal studies indicated potent anticancer, anti-depressant, and anti-inflammatory effects of PAE. Also, PAE is certified "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) and not mutagenic. However, moderation during usage is advisable, as minor adverse effects are associated with a very high dosage. Despite the newly reported findings, its properties have not been thoroughly summarized and reviewed. Rapamycin mw Also, clinical trials and official large-scale field applications of PAE in the agricultural sectors are yet to be reported.
