Background  Cardiogenic brain abscess (CBA) is the commonest noncardiac cause of morbidity and mortality in cyanotic heart disease (CHD). The clinical diagnosis of a CBA is often delayed due to its nonspecific presentations and the scarce availability of computed tomography (CT) imaging in resource-restricted settings. CD437 We attempted to identify parameters that reliably point to the diagnosis of a CBA in patients with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Methods  From among 150 children with TOF treated at a tertiary care institute over a 15-year period from 2001 to 2016, 30 consecutive patients with CBAs and 85 age- and sex-matched controls without CBAs were included in this retrospective case-control study. Demographic and clinical features, laboratory investigations, and baseline echocardiographic findings were analyzed for possible correlations with the presence of a CBA. Statistical Analysis  Variables demonstrating significant bivariate correlations with the presence of a CBA were further analyzed using multivariat reliable pointers of a CBA in patients with TOF. A scoring model-the 'BA-TOF' score-that predicts the occurrence of a CBA has been proposed. Patients with higher scores on the proposed model should be referred urgently for a CT confirmation of the diagnosis. Usage of such a diagnostic aid in resource-limited settings can optimize the pickup rates of a CBA and potentially improve outcomes. Objective  Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an arthropod-borne flavivirus infection having high mortality and morbidity. This study was performed to evaluate the conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in JE and to find out any difference between pediatric and adult JE. Materials and Methods  This retrospective study was performed on serologically positive 54 JE patients presented to a tertiary care hospital with acute encephalitic symptoms between April 2016 and October 2019. Relevant neurological examination, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and MRI scan of the brain were performed. Results  Fifty-four JE patients ( n = 31 males and n = 23 females) having 32 pediatric and 22 adult JE were included in the study sample. Group 1 JE ( n = 16) patients had encephalitic symptoms with duration less than 15 days up to the day of MRI scan and group 2 JE ( n = 38) had symptoms more than 15 days. Group 1 JE had mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value of 0.563 ± 0.109 (standard deviation [SD]) × 10 -3 mm 2 /sec and group 2 JE had 1.095 ± 0.206 (SD) × 10 -3 mm 2 /sec. The mean ADC value of pediatric JE was 0.907 ± 0.336 (SD) × 10 -3 mm 2 /sec and adult JE was 0.982 ± 0.253 (SD) × 10 -3 mm 2 /sec. Conclusion  The majority of the JE patient shows abnormal signal alterations in bilateral thalami and substantia nigra. Diffusion-weighted imaging with ADC mapping helps in evaluating the stage of the JE. No statistical significance of the various conventional MRI findings was found between the pediatric JE and adult JE.
To compare the
elution characteristics of CMW1 and Palacos R bone cement loaded with gentamicin, teicoplanin, or in combination.

Four bone cement discs were prepared for each cement type. Disc 1 contained no antibiotics; disc 2 contained 0.5g gentamicin; disc 3 contained 2g teicoplanin; disc 4 contained 0.5g gentamicin and 2g teicoplanin. Elution studies were conducted using a fluorescence polarisation immunoassay technique and performed at intervals of 6 weeks.

For CMW1, gentamicin and teicoplanin elution levels in combination discs were higher than those in the single antibiotic discs (p<0.001 & p<0.06). For Palacos R, gentamicin elution levels in combination discs were higher than those in the single antibiotic discs (p<0.001), but teicoplanin elution levels in combination discs were lesser than that from the single antibiotic discs (p<0.02). In single and combination discs, gentamicin elution levels in Palacos R were higher than those in CMW1 (p<0.001 & p<0.001). Palacos R eluted more teicoplanin than CMW1, except in combined disc with gentamicin, when less teicoplanin was eluted.

Antibiotic elution is higher in Palacos R than CMW1. Antibiotic combination in both cement types has the synergistic effect of increasing antibiotic elution, except for teicoplanin from Palacos R. When high elution of gentamicin is required, Palacos R is preferable. When high elution of teicoplanin is required, Palacos R with only teicoplanin is superior to CMW1.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of rare tumours that represent less than 1% of all malignant, solid tumours in adults. There is limited epidemiological information regarding STS in Latin America. Therefore, the objective of this study is to present an epidemiological profile of these tumours observed at a single reference centre.

A retrospective study was carried out based on hospital records obtained from a registry of 879 patients with STS of the extremities who were treated at the National Cancer Institute of Mexico from January 1, 1994 to December 31, 2017. Epidemiological variables and relevant clinical data were collected. Five-year survival rates were analysed using Kaplan-Meier estimates, and a multivariate Cox proportional-hazards model measured associations.

A total of 879 records were collected. The median age was 45 years (15-95 years), and the ratio of men to women was 11, with 433 men (49.3%), and 446 women (50.7%). The median tumour size was 11.4cm (2-49cm). The most prevalent histological variants were liposarcomas and synovial sarcomas. The lower limb was the most frequently affected extremity, with the thigh being the most common site followed by the leg. A majority of the patients were diagnosed at clinical stages IIIA-IV.

The data collected from the present cohort provides an overview of the epidemiological profile of STS at a single reference centre in Latin America, and allow comparison with global data.

is a medium-sized leguminous plant found widely in tropical to subtropical areas. It has been used as a medicinal ingredient and in rodenticides by local communities in both Indonesia and the Philippines. This study aimed to investigate the wound healing effects of an ointment containing
leaves on inflammatory cells using a rat model. We also determined its effect on the expression of interleukin (IL) 6 and IL-1β.

We used 16 Wistar male rats aged approximately 2 months and weighing 150-200 g. They were divided into four treatment groups (T1, positive control; T2, negative control; T3, wounds treated with
from Indonesia; and T4, wounds treated with
from the Philippines), and the ointment therapies were applied to wounds for 3 days. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed to examine the inflammatory cells microscopically. IL-1β and IL-6 expression were observed immunohistochemically.

leaves significantly (p<0.05) decreased the number of inflammatory cells, and the expression of IL-1β and IL-6 in the group treated with Indonesian
leaves was higher than that in the group treated with
leaves from the Philippines. The leaves contain flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which act as anti-inflammatory agents to enhance the wound healing process.

Our findings suggest that
leaves from both the Philippines and Indonesia possess wound healing properties.

is an important food-borne and zoonotic disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. The objectives of this study were to isolate, serotype, and genetically characterize
spp. from Zarqa river and King Talal dam waters, vegetables irrigated by such waters, and manure of poultry and livestock farms located in the Zarqa river basin in Jordan. In addition, certain virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance patterns of isolated
strains were determined.

A total of 250 samples were cultured using routine microbiological methods. Suspected
spp. were identified based on colony morphology and confirmed using biochemical and molecular methods. Virulence genes including
plasmid were detected using multiplex PCR. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).

In total, 32/250 (12.8%)
spp. isolates were recovered from different sources. Of these, the most common serotype was
subspecies 1 (23 isolates), followed by
serovar Typhimurium (4 isolates),
sn. Appropriate monitoring of irrigation water must be applied to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination.
Results of this study indicate a serious potential threat to public health associated with consuming leafy green vegetables grown on the banks of Zarqa river and its dam because of widespread Salmonella spp. contamination. Appropriate monitoring of irrigation water must be applied to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination.
The present serodiagnosis of brucellosis in livestock is based on the whole cell or smooth lipopolysaccharide of the
organism in which specificity is hampered by the cross-reactivity, especially with the antibodies against
O9 organism. The problem can be addressed by screening for better immunodominant antigens. Hence, the present study was undertaken to screen protein antigens of
for their diagnostic potential in cattle brucellosis.

Protein antigens of
(n=10) non-reactive to antibodies against
O9 were selected, expressed in
, assessed the reactivity of expressed recombinant proteins by Western blot, standardized indirect-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting
antibodies in cattle serum, and comparative evaluation was done.

All the selected protein antigens were expressed and in the Western blot with
antibodies positive cattle serum, six recombinant (
protein 26 [BP26], Cu-Zn Superoxide dismutase [SodC],
I-1885, Serine protease, Bacterioferritin, and
Lumazine Synthase [BLS]) proteins showed reaction whereas none of the proteins showed reactivity with
negative cattle serum. ELISA has been done using known
positive and negative cattle sera samples (n=113 each) in which the performance of recombinant proteins in diagnosing brucellosis was in the order of BP26 > BLS > SodC followed by rest of the proteins. BP26 based ELISA was found to be better with area under the curve as 0.953, and diagnostic sensitivity, diagnostic specificity, and Youden's index of 90.27%, 95.58%, and 0.8584, respectively, with the excellent agreement (k=0.85).

BP26 could be a potential diagnostic antigen among the immunodominant proteins of
in ruling out
O9 infection while diagnosing brucellosis in cattle herds.
BP26 could be a potential diagnostic antigen among the immunodominant proteins of B. abortus in ruling out Y. enterocolitica O9 infection while diagnosing brucellosis in cattle herds.
