Extreme cold or heat can cause the car to stop functioning. Try waiting a little while before you decide to replace it.
It's quite a hassle when keys to your car break and it happens at the most inconvenient times! You can repair a broken key without the need to purchase a new one.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs let us to open doors, trunks and tailgates, without having to fumble around for a key. Some key fobs have an inbuilt key that can be used to start our cars. These fobs are powered by a small battery. If the battery is dead, the key fob cannot emit a signal that could be used to start the vehicle. There are several methods to repair a dead car key fob.
First, check whether the key fob actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you will need to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by removing the key fob from its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to pry it apart. It is important not to apply too much force, or it could cause damage to the fob. It is also essential to make sure that you replace the correct battery type. The majority of key fobs utilize CR2032 3-Volt batteries, but some models may require a different type. You can determine what kind of battery your vehicle requires in the owner's manual, or visit an Interstate All Battery Center and get a specialist in battery care to assist you.
You may be able to revive a key fob that isn't dead by moving it closer to the car. Since the majority of key fobs use RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only work at a short distance and need to be close enough for the ignition system to recognize the signal. If you can move a few inches closer to your car, it may unlock or even begin to work.
Many automobile manufacturers have a backup system that is activated when the battery of the key fob is low. Ford, for example, has a slot that is devoted to the key fob. If properly inserted the key fob can be used to start the engine of the car. Check your owner's manual for details on how to locate this slot and how to insert the key fob. If you're not able to get your car started using this method, you should contact roadside assistance.
Broken Key Ring
The chip inside the key fob is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. The chip could be damaged or there might be programming errors. If this occurs your key fob will not be able to send the correct identification code, and your car won't begin. A malfunctioning transponder could be caused by physical damage to the key shell, or wear and tear on the contact pads.
There are often warning indicators on your dashboard if a keyfob has trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These include errors, flashing lights or the key not locking the car. If you are noticing any of these warnings, contact your local locksmith immediately for key fob repair or replacement.
If you carry a lot of keys, it is easy to damage the key ring. This could cause the fob to split in half. This is among the most common causes of a broken car key. If key fob repairs happens, attempt to use super glue to repair it by applying a small amount of the glue to both sides of the break and pressing them in a controlled manner. Make sure to use a gel type of glue that dries slowly so that you don't risk drips or runniness.

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs has broken off the tiny key ring loop at the top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It's believed to be made of very soft metal or plastic. I've done a hole in the wall and then wet-sanded it to make it stronger. However, I'm sure that's not helping.
I've also tried to wrap the broken the ring using clear tape, but that didn't seem as good. It's a shame because I use the little split rings to keep my keys in place.
If the key fob's case itself is broken It's usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). There are online kits available to help, but they generally only offer an interim fix. It may be faster to take it to a mechanic who can swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. You can also purchase a new case at a locksmith or home improvement stores. They're not likely to be as costly as a new key fob.
