The thickness of the frontal bone was measured on the T2-weighted axial images at the top level of the lateral ventricles as a mean from both sides. We considered 10mm or thicker frontal bone as HFI. The total prevalence of HFI was 8.1%, with a more frequent occurrence in women (p0.05). In males, there was no difference in the frontal bone thickness between different age groups (p0.05), while in females we found differences between the youngest and the oldest group, and also between the middle-aged and the oldest group (p0.05). The female respondents had a thicker frontal bone, which was statistically significant only in the oldest group (p0.001). Frontal bone thickness was age-dependent only in women (Spearman's Rho 0.11; p≤0.01). The aim of the present study is to assess the iodine status of pregnant women in Shanghai, and their knowledge regarding iodine, with the goal of investigating the relationship between iodine and thyroid function during pregnancy. This is a cross-sectional study. We recruited 3 groups of participants including 145 pregnant women (12-16 weeks gestation), 101 pregnant women (24-28 weeks gestation), and 108 pregnant women (34-38 weeks gestation). Iodine status and dietary intake were calculated from 24-h urinary iodine concentration (UIC). Knowledge regarding iodine was collected through a questionnaire. We additionally examined TSH, FT3, FT4, and TPOAb of the participants. The median of UIC of the 354 pregnant women was 119.2 μg/L, and 68.9% had urinary iodine levels below 150 μg/L. The proportion of daily iodized salt consumption in pregnant women was only 78.0%. The median UIC of the pregnant women who had consumed iodized salt was significantly higher than that of the pregnant women without iodized salt intake (Z = - 5.087, P  less then  0.001). Pregnant women in weeks 34-38 with a high level of knowledge had significantly lower TSH levels than those with low knowledge level (P = 0.046). Among the 349 pregnant women, few were aware of the harm to the fetus (8.3%). Significant differences were found in the scores for the knowledge level of women with different educational levels (Z = - 5.413, P  less then  0.001). The canonical glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β)/β-catenin signaling-mediated brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) pathway has been suggested to play important roles in memory. Thus, Al may affect LTP through this pathway. In this study, a Sprague-Dawley rat model of neurotoxicity was established through intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of aluminum maltol (Al(mal)3), which was achieved by preimplantation of a cannula into the lateral ventricle. The rats in the control and Al-treated groups received a daily injection of SB216763, an inhibitor of GSK-3β. Electrophysiology and western blot analysis were used to investigate the regulatory effect of the GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling-mediated BDNF pathway on LTP impairment induced by Al(mal)3. The results confirmed that i.c.v. injection of Al(mal)3 significantly suppressed the field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP) amplitude, as indicated by a decrease in BDNF protein expression, which was accompanied by dose-dependent decreases in β-catenin protein expression and the phosphorylation of GSK-3β at Ser9. Rats that received SB216763, a GSK-3β inhibitor, exhibited higher fEPSP amplitudes than control rats. Furthermore, SB216763 treatment upregulated the hippocampal protein expression of BDNF and β-catenin while increasing the ratio of p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β. From the perspective of the identified β-catenin-BDNF axis, Al impairs hippocampal LTP, possibly through the GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling-mediated BDNF pathway.In this study, a simple, low-cost, rapid, and eco-friendly approach for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the aqueous extract of Cuminum cyminum L. (cumin) seed (CcAgNPs) was developed. Also, the anti-nociceptive properties of these synthesized AgNPs were evaluated in vivo. The CcAgNPs characterized using Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The analysis of phytochemical components in the aqueous extract of cumin seeds showed high concentrations of total phenols and ascorbic acid and low concentrations of total flavonoids. The analysis of phytochemical components and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of functional groups responsible for the bioreduction of Ag+ to AgNPs. The UV-Vis absorbance spectrum of CcAgNPs showed a maximum wavelength at 442 nm. The analysis of TEM images showed a spherical shape with a size of less than 50 nm, while XRD spectra revealed the crystallinity of CcAgNPs. The analysis of anti-nociceptive properties of CcAgNPs showed that the first phase of formalin-induced pain was significantly reduced in the groups receiving 200, 500, and 1000 mg/kg CcAgNPs compared with the controls and the group receiving 300 mg/kg of sodium salicylate (SS300). The second phase of formalin pain was also significantly reduced in the groups receiving 200 and 500 mg/kg CcAgNPs compared to the controls and SS300 group. Overall, we introduced a new AgNPs synthesized from cumin seeds (CcAgNPs) and showed their anti-nociceptive properties in the formalin-induced pain.
