Methods Fifty patients with schizophrenia and 50 healthy controls performed the newly developed copy figure task in which participants copy a complex geometrical figure up to eight times until they are satisfied with the result. Objective performance was scored blind to group status. Subjective performance was rated on a 10-point scale. Carefulness of the drawing using anchor points served as a proxy for effort. #link# Results Patients made as many attempts as controls to copy the figure despite their worse subjective and objective performance. The number of attempts was negatively correlated with (persecutory) delusions and the PANSS total score. Neither effort nor possible frustration due to a plateau in performance was a reason for task termination. Conclusions This exploratory study is in line with predictions based on the liberal acceptance model. For future studies, we recommend further cross-validating this paradigm and testing whether patients' retrospective assessment of their performance is exaggerated relative to controls. Here, we introduce a novel Droplet-Microarray platform based on a hydrophilic-superhydrophobic patterned surface that enables screenings using only 100 cells and 30 picomoles of a drug per individual nanoliter-sized droplet. We demonstrate that the dose-response of as few as 100 primary patient-derived chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells to anticancer compounds on the Droplet-Microarray platform resembles the dose-response obtained in 384-well plates requiring 20,000 tumor cells per experiment. The extremely miniaturized Droplet-Microarray platform thus carries great potential for ex vivo drug sensitivity and resistance tests on patient-derived tumor cells and potentially for implementing such tests in medical practice of precision medicine.We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus with clinical presentation of bilateral upward gaze palsy and intraoral numbness. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was able to identify the pathogenic lesion at the left side of midbrain, involving the vertical gaze center and sensory pathways for innervating the buccal and hard palate mucosa. A course of aggressive immunosuppressive treatment resulted in prompt resolution of gaze palsy and the midbrain lesion.
To describe clinical effectiveness of belimumab for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in real-world practice in Argentina.

This retrospective, observational study analysed medical record data of patients with SLE treated with belimumab in 15 centres in Argentina. Primary endpoint overall clinical response (assessed on a scale similar to the 6-point Physician Global Assessment) at months 6, 12, 18 and 24, all versus index (belimumab initiation). Secondary endpoints improvement in disease activity (SELENA-SLEDAI), SLE manifestations, and corticosteroid dose change.

Records for 81 patients (91% female) were analysed. Clinical improvements were reported for 95%, 95%, 98% and 100% patients at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months post index, respectively. Mean SELENA-SLEDAI score decreased from 11.21 at index to 4.76, 3.77, 3.86 and 2.17 at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months post index, respectively. Number of flares decreased from 1.05 at index to 0.21, 0.09, 0.22 and 0.30 at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months post index, respectively. Mean corticosteroid dose was 14.59 mg/day at index, and 6.45, 5.18, 5.17 and 4.78 mg/day at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months post index, respectively.

To evaluate the characteristics and outcomes of patients with localized rectal cancer treated with limited versus radical surgery following neoadjuvant treatment.

Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database has been accessed and patients with localized rectal adenocarcinoma (M0) 2004-2015 who have received neoadjuvant radiation before having some sort of surgery were included. link2 Multivariable Cox regression analysis was then used to assess the impact of the type of resection on overall survival and cancer-specific survival.

A total of 19162 individuals who have undergone radical surgery and 450 individuals who have undergone limited surgery were included. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, the following factors were associated with a higher likelihood of radical surgery younger age (OR for age ≥65 years versus 17-64 years 0.430; 95% CI 0.355-0.520) and clinically node-positive stage (OR 2.442; 95% CI 1.858-3.211). Within multivariable Cox regression analysis, limited surgery was associated with worse overall survival (HR 1.276; 95% CI 1.092-1.491) but no difference in cancer-specific survival (HR 0.980; 95% CI 0.728-1.318).

Emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a complicated issue, especially when treating infectious immunodeficiency related diseases. In recent years, when compared to bulk materials, nanomaterials (NMs) with specific antibacterial activities have played a novel role in treating bacterial infections. Among NMs, quantum dots (QDs), specifically carbon containing QDs including graphene oxide QD (GOQD), graphene QD (GQD), and carbon QD (CQD), have demonstrated bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities via photodynamic (PD) effects against antibiotic resistant bacteria under a certain wavelength of light.

In this mini-review, recent advances and challenges related to antibacterial and biocompatibility activities of modified GQD, GOQD, CQD, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are discussed.

Among these, apelin is recognized as an insulin-sensitizer adipokine. Data on apelin levels in obese children and its relation to insulin-sensitivity are limited.

We aimed to evaluate apelin levels in relation to obesity and insulin sensitivity in a large cohort of overweight/obese children and adolescents. Furthermore, these youths were reevaluated after a median 6.5years of follow-up, thus allowing assessing changes in apelin levels in relation to increasing age and weight changes.

Clinical data in 909 children and adolescents were collected between 2007 and 2010. Two hundred and one were reexamined at a median 6.5years of follow-up. All subjects at baseline and at follow-up underwent an OGTT. Apelin levels were measured on sera by ELISA method.

Therefore, further investigation and understanding various aspects of inflammasome complexes as well as their pivotal roles in the immunopathology of human ocular illnesses are essential. The present review aims to describe the significant involvement of inflammasomes in the immunopathology of important inflammatory retinal illnesses, including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy focusing on anti-inflammasome therapy as a promising approach in the treatment of inflammation-related eye diseases.Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a rare and underdiagnosed disease that is associated with the development of liver disease in adults and children and pulmonary emphysema in adults. Several studies have shown that there is limited knowledge about the disease and its diagnosis among health care providers, and there is an important inequity in the access to specialized care and appropriate treatment across Europe. The European Commision and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) recommend that the care of patients with AATD must be organized in reference centers at national or regional levels. These reference centers must provide optimal clinical care in terms of adequate diagnostic techniques, such as phenotyping and genotyping, and ensure access to treatment according to guidelines. Reference centers should also provide continuous medical education for health care professionals, genetic counseling, collaboration with patient associations and promote collaborative research and clinical trials with new and existing treatments for the disease.
