The costs parasites impose on hosts can lead to reductions in survival and fecundity, but few studies have evaluated the impacts after infection. Hairworms are parasites of terrestrial arthropods that are free-living in aquatic systems as adults. As parasitic juveniles, hairworms acquire nutrients from their definitive hosts, shifting resources away from host development to parasite growth. However, until now, only one study has examined survivorship of naturally infected hosts with hairworms. Using a different hairworm and host system, we conducted experimental infections to examine growth, survivorship, and egg production in virgin female Acheta domesticus infected with the hairworm, Paragordius varius. We found that infected crickets grew significantly less during hairworm development compared to sham-infected control crickets. After releasing their worms, infected crickets survived for 73 ± 32 days but had significantly shorter life spans by an average of 13 days compared to sham-infected control crickets. However, we found that 50% of previously infected crickets produced eggs after releasing their worms. Taken together, these observations suggest that female crickets infected with hairworms may experience less mortality than previous anecdotal evidence suggests. Finally, we discuss the definition of parasitoid and how it relates to nematomorphs, and we suggest that more field and laboratory research is required before suggesting hairworms are parasitoids.
The on-body injector (OBI) automatically delivers pegfilgrastim the day after chemotherapy (CTx), thus eliminating the need of return visits to the medical office for guideline-compliant pegfilgrastim administration. The CONVENIENCE study aimed to evaluate patient, nurse, and physician preferences as well as health economics for pegfilgrastim administration either with OBI or manually using a pre-filled syringe (PS).

Patients with early breast cancer, receiving two or three weekly anthracycline/cyclophosphamide or three weekly taxane-based CTx, and patients with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) receiving first-line R-CHOP-14 or -21 were randomized 11 to receive both pegfilgrastim application forms for four consecutive CTx cycles in an alternating sequence starting either with OBI or PS. Primary endpoint was patient preference, assessed by questionnaires.

A total of 308 patients were evaluable in the per-protocol analysis. Patients slightly preferred OBI over PS (OBI, n = 133, 43.2%; vs. PS, n = 111, 36.0%; p-value = 0.159), while study nurses slightly preferred PS (n = 19, 46.3%) over OBI (n = 18, 43.9%) and physicians clearly preferred PS (n = 24, 58.8%) over OBI (n = 15, 36.6%). Among patients with preference for OBI, saving of time was their major reason for preference (53.4%). Pegfilgrastim was administered 24-72h after each CTx cycle in 97.6% of OBI and 63.1% of PS applications.

The OBI was slightly preferred by patients and saving time was the major reason for their preference. PS was physicians' most preferable choice and slightly preferred by nurses. Using OBI, pegfilgrastim was almost always administered within the time period recommended by current guidelines, while it was often not applied as specified using PS.

Cardiovascular disease, often secondary to chemotherapy, is the leading cause of death in BC survivors. Increased aerobic capacity improves post-rehabilitation survival; however, many cancer rehabilitation programs are limited to lower intensity training. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is associated with the largest improvements in aerobic capacity; therefore, this study aimed to determine whether HIIT would cause a greater increase in VO
peak than continuous moderate-intensity (MICT) exercise in previously trained BC survivors.

Twenty BC survivors who had completed a low/moderate-intensity exercise rehabilitation program performed a VO
peak test and received a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan at baseline and after randomization into a 12-week HIIT or MICT program. ANOVA with repeated measures determined the effects of the different training programs on aerobic capacity and body composition.

Both groups began the training program near or above age- and sex-matched VO
peak norms. Ph greater intensity and frequency of training are encouraged.Cerebral proliferative angiopathy (CPA) is an infrequent vascular malformation. It is composed of a nidus, arterial feeders, and venous drainage. Some special features differentiate it from the common arteriovenous malformations (AVM). The nidus has normal cerebral tissue intermingled and occupies a large portion of the brain. There is a frequent transdural arterial supply. Arterial feeders and draining veins are of small caliber concerning the nidus size. Ischemic strokes are the most common clinical event. Intracranial bleeding when occurs has a worse prognosis due to its high recurrence rate. We have presented two cases of CPA in pediatric patients who required surgical resolution of their acute episode.It is supposed that the subterranean lifestyle in mammals is reflected in ear morphology and tuning of hearing to low frequencies. We studied two root-rat species to see if their ear morphology reflects the difference in the amount of their surface activity. Whereas the more subterranean Tachyoryctes splendens possesses shorter pinnae as expected, it has smaller bullae compared to the more epigeic Tachyoryctes macrocephalus. The ratio between the eardrum and the stapedial footplate area and the ratio between the mallear and the incudal lever were lower in T. splendens (19.3 ± 0.3 and 1.9 ± 0.0, respectively) than in T. macrocephalus (21.8 ± 0.6 and 2.1 ± 0.1), probably reflecting the latter's higher surface activity. The cochlea in both species has 3.5 coils, yet the basilar membrane is longer in the smaller T. splendens (13.0 ± 0.5 versus 11.4 ± 0.7 mm), which indicates its wider hearing range and/or higher sensitivity (to some frequencies).
