We confirm the presence of breed specific and across-breed core microbiomes. Additionally, we show the existence of breed specific complex microbial networks in all groups. This study provides the first (and comprehensive) insight into the gut microbiota of three indigenous breeds and one commercial broiler line of chickens reared without antimicrobials, and underscores the need to study microbial diversity in other indigenous breeds.Presently, water quantity and quality problems persist both in developed and developing countries, and concerns have been raised about the presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in water. The circular economy provides ways of achieving sustainable resource management that can be implemented in the water sector, such as the reuse of drinking water treatment sludges (WTSs). This study evaluated the potential of WTS containing a high concentration of activated carbon for the removal of two EPs the steroid hormones 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). To this end, WTSs from two Portuguese water treatment plants (WTPs) were characterised and tested for their hormone adsorbance potential. Both WTSs showed a promising adsorption potential for the two hormones studied due to their textural and chemical properties. For WTS1, the final concentration for both hormones was lower than the limit of quantification (LOQ). As for WTS2, the results for E2 removal were similar to WTS1, although for EE2, the removal efficiency was lower (around 50%). The overall results indicate that this method may lead to new ways of using this erstwhile residue as a possible adsorbent material for the removal of several EPs present in wastewaters or other matrixes, and as such contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets.The current study was conducted to evaluate the impact of grape (Vitis vinifera) seed powder and zinc-glycine complex on growth parameters and cecal health of broiler following Eimeria tenella challenge. A total of 250 day-old male broilers (Hubbard) were distributed into five treatments as follows I-negative control (basal diet); II-positive control (E. tenella challenge); III-group infected + Amprolium; IV-group coccidial infection + organic zinc (OZ) at 50 ppm + grape seed powder (GSP) at 2.5 g/kg; V-coccidial infection + organic zinc (OZ) at 50 ppm + grape seed powder (GSP) at 5.0 g/kg. see more From findings, a lower (p less then 0.05) feed intake was noted for positive control compared to the other treatment groups. Conversely, higher (p less then 0.05) body weight, dressing percentage, and feed conversion ratio were observed in infected + Amprolium, GSP2.5 + OZ50, and GSP5 + OZ50 treatments in comparison to the positive control. Moreover, the positive control showed severe cecal lesions of thickness and hemorrhages with mild congestion. The lesion scores decreased (p less then 0.05) in GSP and OZ treated groups compared to the positive control. Supplementing diet with GSP and OZ at both levels showed restoration of intense sloughing of villi. From the present findings, it can be concluded that OZ and grape seed powder positively ameliorated the growth performance, lesion score, and oocysts shedding in broilers infected with E. tenella.The identification of improved medical countermeasures against exposure to chemical warfare nerve agents (CWNAs), a class of organophosphorus compounds, is dependent on the choice of animal model used in preclinical studies. CWNAs bind to acetylcholinesterase and prevent the catalysis of acetylcholine, causing a plethora of peripheral and central physiologic manifestations, including seizure. Rodents are widely used to elucidate the effects of CWNA-induced seizure, albeit with a caveat they express carboxylesterase activity in plasma. Carboxylesterase, an enzyme involved in the detoxification of some organophosphorus compounds, plays a scavenging role and decreases CWNA availability, thus exerting a protective effect. Furthermore, species-specific amino acid differences in acetylcholinesterase confound studies that use oximes or other compounds to restore its function after inhibition by CWNA. The creation of a human acetylcholinesterase knock-in/serum carboxylesterase knockout (C57BL/6-Ces1c tm1.1Loc AChE tm1.1Loc /J; a.k.a KIKO) mouse may facilitate better modeling of CWNA toxicity in a small rodent species. The current studies characterize the effects of exposure to soman, a highly toxic CWNA, and evaluate the efficacy of anti-seizure drugs in this newly developed KIKO mouse model. Data demonstrate that a combination of midazolam and ketamine reduces seizure duration and severity, eliminates the development of spontaneous recurrent seizures, and protects certain brain regions from neuronal damage in a genetically modified model with human relevance to organophosphorus compound toxicity. This new animal model and the results of this study and future studies using it will enhance medical countermeasures development for both defense and homeland security purposes.Polyurethane has a microphase separation structure, while polyethylene glycol (PEG) can form a hydrated layer to resist protein adsorption. In this paper, PEG was introduced to polyurethane to improve the antifouling properties of the polyurethane, providing a new method and idea for the preparation of new antifouling polyurethane materials. The mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, swelling degree, microphase separation and antifouling performance of the coatings were evaluated. The response characteristics of the polyurethane coatings in a seawater environment were studied, and the performance changes of coatings in seawater were tested. The results showed that the crystallized PEG soft segments increased, promoting microphase separation. The stress at 100% and the elasticity modulus of the polyurethane material also markedly increased, in addition to increases in the swelling degree in seawater, the water contact angle decreased. A total of 25% of PEG incorporated into a soft segment can markedly improve the antibacterial properties of the coatings, but adding more PEG has little significant effect. After immersion in seawater, the coatings became softer and more elastic. This is because water molecules formed hydrogen bonding with the amino NH, which resulted in a weakening effect being exerted on the carbonyl C=O hydrogen bonding and ether oxygen group crystallization.Background Since numerical calorie labels have limited effects on less-calorie food ordering, an alternative called physical activity calorie equivalent (PACE) labels, which exhibit calories using visible symbols and the minutes of exercise to burn off the calories, may be more effective in reducing calories ordered. Methods By using a choice experiment (CE) approach, the aims of this study were to estimate the effects of PACE labels on consumer preferences for healthy and unhealth food. Red date walnuts and potato chips were used as the representatives of healthy and unhealthy foods respectively in this study. Moreover, future time perspective (FTP) is an individual trait variable of consumers, which has been recognized as a significant driver of healthy behaviors. We also included FTP into the interaction with PACE labels. Results Firstly, the results were opposite between the healthy and unhealthy food groups. Respondents showed significantly more positive attitudes toward red date walnuts (i.e., healthy food) with PACE labels, while they showed significantly more negative preferences for chips (i.e., unhealthy food) with PACE labels. Secondly, people with higher FTP are preferred red date walnuts with PACE labels, while PACE labels on chips could undermine the preferences of respondents with higher FTP. Thirdly, we found that women (vs. men) were less inclined to choose healthy food with standard calorie labels and labels showing the minutes of running to burn off the calories, as well as that the elderly (vs. younger) people in the healthy food group preferred the labels showing the minutes of running to burn off the calories. People with a higher body mass index (BMI) were reluctant to purchase walnuts with the information about the minutes of walking. Conclusions Results from this study showed that PACE labels have significant effects on consumers' preferences for food products.Graphene is an ideal ultrathin material for various optoelectronic devices, but poor light-graphene interaction limits its further applications particularly in the visible (Vis) to near-infrared (NIR) region. Despite tremendous efforts to improve light absorption in graphene, achieving highly efficient light absorption of monolayer graphene within a comparatively simple architecture is still urgently needed. Here, we demonstrate the interesting attribute of bound state in the continuum (BIC) for highly efficient light absorption of graphene by using a simple Si-based photonic crystal slab (PCS) with a slit. Near-perfect absorption of monolayer graphene can be realized due to high confinement of light and near-field enhancement in the Si-based PCS, where BIC turns into quasi-BIC due to the symmetry-breaking of the structure. Theoretical analysis based on the coupled mode theory (CMT) is proposed to evaluate the absorption performances of monolayer graphene integrated with the symmetry-broken PCS, which indicates that high absorption of graphene is feasible at critical coupling based on the destructive interference of transmission light. Moreover, the absorption spectra of the monolayer graphene are stable to the variations of the structural parameters, and the angular tolerances of classical incidence can be effectively improved via full conical incidence. By using the full conical incidence, the angular bandwidths for the peak absorptivity and for the central wavelength of graphene absorption can be enhanced more than five times and 2.92 times, respectively. When the Si-based PCS with graphene is used in refractive index sensors, excellent sensing performances with sensitivity of 604 nm/RIU and figure of merit (FoM) of 151 can be achieved.Although bioabsorbable polymers have garnered increasing attention because of their potential in tissue engineering applications, to our knowledge there are only a few bioabsorbable 3D printed medical devices on the market thus far. In this study, we assessed the processability of medical grade Poly(lactic-co-glycolic) Acid (PLGA)8515 via two additive manufacturing technologies Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and Direct Pellet Printing (DPP) to highlight the least destructive technology towards PLGA. To quantify PLGA degradation, its molecular weight (gel permeation chromatography (GPC)) as well as its thermal properties (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)) were evaluated at each processing step, including sterilization with conventional methods (ethylene oxide, gamma, and beta irradiation). Results show that 3D printing of PLGA on a DPP printer significantly decreased the number-average molecular weight (Mn) to the greatest extent (26% Mn loss, p less then 0.0001) as it applies a longer residence time and higher shear stress compared to classic FFF (19% Mn loss, p less then 0.
