human measurements are well suited for determining AXR, with the exception of single-voxel analysis, due to limited SNR. The detection of changes in membrane permeability in diseased tissue is nonetheless challenging because of the AXR dependence on further factors, such as packing density and geometry, which cannot be disentangled without further knowledge of the underlying cell structure.Although threats to global biodiversity are well known, slowing current rates of biodiversity loss remains a challenge. Tie2 kinase inhibitor 1 nmr The Aichi targets set out 20 goals on which the international community should act to alleviate biodiversity decline, 1 of which (Target 1) aims to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity. Although conventional indicators for Target 1 are of low spatial and temporal coverage, conservation culturomics metrics show how biodiversity awareness can be quantified at the global scale. Following methods used for the Living Planet Index, we devised a species awareness index (SAI) to measure change in species awareness based on Wikipedia views. We calculated this index at the page level for 41,197 species listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) across 10 Wikipedia languages and >2 billion views from 1 July 2015 to 30 March 2020. Bootstrapped indices for the page-level SAI showed that overall awareness of biodiversity increased marginally over time, although there were differences among taxonomic classes and languages. Among taxonomic classes, overall awareness increased fastest for reptiles and slowest for amphibians. Among languages, overall species awareness increased fastest for Japanese and slowest for Chinese and German users. Although awareness of species as a whole increased and was significantly higher for traded species, from January 2016 through January 2020, change in awareness appeared not to be strongly related to whether the species is traded or is a pollinator. As a data source for public biodiversity awareness, the SAI could be integrated into the Conservation International Biodiversity Engagement Indicator.
Most voxels in white matter contain multiple fiber populations with different orientations and levels of myelination. Conventional T
mapping measures 1 T
value per voxel, representing a weighted average of the multiple tract T
times. Inversion-recovery diffusion-weighted imaging (IR-DWI) allows the T
times of multiple tracts in a voxel to be disentangled, but the scan time is prohibitively long. Recently, slice-shuffled IR-DWI implementations have been proposed to significantly reduce scan time. In this work, we demonstrate that we can measure tract-specific T
values in the whole brain using simultaneous multi-slice slice-shuffled IR-DWI at 3T.
We perform simulations to evaluate the accuracy and precision of our crossing fiber IR-DWI signal model for various fiber parameters. The proposed sequence and signal model are tested in a phantom consisting of crossing asparagus pieces doped with gadolinium to vary T
, and in 2 human subjects.
Our simulations show that tract-specific T
times can be estimated within 5% of the nominal fiber T
values. Tract-specific T
values were resolved in subvoxel 2 fiber crossings in the asparagus phantom. Tract-specific T
times were resolved in 2 different tract crossings in the human brain where myelination differences have previously been reported; the crossing of the cingulum and genu of the corpus callosum and the crossing of the corticospinal tract and pontine fibers.
Whole-brain tract-specific T
mapping is feasible using slice-shuffled IR-DWI at 3T. This technique has the potential to improve the microstructural characterization of specific tracts implicated in neurodevelopment, aging, and demyelinating disorders.

In 2005, we initiated a biological control effort based on the specialist tachinid parasitoid Cyzenis albicans, which had previously been introduced along with the generalist ichneumonid parasitoid Agrypon flaveolatum to control winter moth in Nova Scotia in the 1950s and British Columbia in the 1970s. Due to concerns of possible non-target impacts by A. flaveolatum, we focused entirely on the specialist C. albicans. Each year for 14 yr, we collected several thousand individuals of C. albicans from British Columbia and released them in widely spaced sites in the northeastern United States. As of 2020, we had established C. albicans at 41 of 44 sites from coastal Maine to southeastern Connecticut. By 2016, winter moth densities (pupae/m2 ) had declined from 100-500 to 0-10 pupae/m2 at six release sites at least 10 km apart and this was coincident with the onset of 10-40% parasitism. At one site in Wellesley, Massachusetts, the decline occurred in 2012 and winter moth densities have remained low for seven subsequent years. Defoliation in Massachusetts has been reduced to undetectable levels by aerial survey since 2016. DNA sequencing of the barcoding region of the mitochondrial gene CO1 confirmed that all C. albicans reared from winter moth matched the C. albicans collected from Vancouver Island and were distinct from parasitic flies (presumably a native species) reared from a native congener of winter moth, Bruce spanworm (O. bruceata). Successful establishment of C. albicans on winter moth represents a rare, if not the only, example of the biological control of a major forest defoliator that attacks a wide range of tree species anywhere in the world by the establishment of a single specialist natural enemy.Numerous studies have examined the histology of metal-on-metal hip tissues for evidence of a dose response to metal wear but have often reported inconclusive or contradictory findings. The aim of the present study was to address these discrepancies using multiple histological scoring methods to characterize the tissue features of one large group of revised metal-on-metal total hips. Periprosthetic tissues from 165 metal-on-metal hip revisions were examined for features of aseptic lymphocytic vasculitis associated lesions (ALVAL) as rated using two scoring systems as well as rankings for macrophage and lymphocyte numbers, intracellular wear debris and necrosis. Correlations between histological features and clinical variables including gender and time to revision and implant variables including articular surface wear volume or visual taper corrosion scores were examined. Both ALVAL scores reflected the macrophage dominated histology with average scores of 5.9/10 and 1.5/3. There was a statistically significant correlation between the original ALVAL score and wear rate per year (correlation coefficient = 0.
