How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. how do i get a replacement key for my audi , i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.
I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially when they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your car. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a standard part across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
