These findings suggest that a language learning ability may explain the association between bilingualism and executive function. Because the best statistical approach to testing for effects on differences is a matter of dispute, all analyses were conducted with both a difference score and a residual gain score as the outcome variable. The central findings, but not all findings, were the same with both approaches. The false dilemma or dichotomy is a logical fallacy that occurs when interlocuters accept the premises in an incompatibility statement as being jointly exhaustive (i.e., leaving no third option), whereas that is in fact not the case. Brisson et al. [Memory & Cognition (2018), Vol. 46, pp. 657-670] investigated this fallacy in an adult sample and discovered a content effect that influenced participants' performance. The current study aimed to elaborate on these findings by establishing whether similar patterns could be observed with children. A number of age-appropriate incompatibility premises were constructed. For every item, four different inferential problems were presented (Affirm First, Affirm Second, Deny First, and Deny Second) with three potential answers to choose from (X, not X, or uncertainty regarding X). A sample of 192 volunteer children, with ages ranging from 8 to 13 years, was collected. Statistical analysis showed no significant effect for participants' age but did reveal main effects for premise validity and the amount of available "third options" (possibilities outside of the presented dichotomy). These results are a clear replication of the general effects on adults found by Brisson et al. Affirm inferences were also easy for children, Deny inferences were difficult (even more so than for adults), and content had a profound effect on participants' performance. Whenever more third options could be generated, children were less likely to fall into the false dilemma fallacy. Our findings thus further support the idea that reasoning with incompatibilities is influenced by the same semantic retrieval processes that have been previously related to human conditional reasoning.Pyrazolopyrimidinones are fused nitrogen-containing heterocyclic systems, which act as a core scaffold in many pharmaceutically relevant compounds. Pyrazolopyrimidinones have been demonstrated to be efficient in treating several diseases, including cystic fibrosis, obesity, viral infection and cancer. In this study using glioblastoma U-251MG cell line, we tested the cytotoxic effects of 15 pyrazolopyrimidinones, synthesised via a two-step process, in combination with cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). CAP is an adjustable source of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species as well as other unique chemical and physical effects which has been successfully tested as an innovative cancer therapy in clinical trials. Significantly variable cytotoxicity was observed with IC50 values ranging from around 11 μM to negligible toxicity among tested compounds. Interestingly, two pyrazolopyrimidinones were identified that act in a prodrug fashion and display around 5-15 times enhanced reactive-species dependent cytotoxicity when combined with cold atmospheric plasma. Activation was evident for direct CAP treatment on U-251MG cells loaded with the pyrazolopyrimidinone and indirect CAP treatment of the pyrazolopyrimidinone in media before adding to cells. Our results demonstrated the potential of CAP combined with pyrazolopyrimidinones as a programmable cytotoxic therapy and provide screened scaffolds that can be used for further development of pyrazolopyrimidinone prodrug derivatives.Patients receiving mood stabilizers such as valproate (VAL) and carbamazepine (CMZP)/Oxcarbazepine (OX) may be referred for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). AZD9291 datasheet The relative effects of these anticonvulsants on seizure threshold and seizure duration are unknown. We extracted data for a 20-month period from the medical records of patients who received bilateral ECT while on treatment with VAL (n=102) or CMZP/OX (n=31; 20 on CMZP, 11 on oxcarbazepine). Age-matched ECT-treated anticonvulsant-free patients (n=133) formed the control group. Seizure threshold in these patients had been determined by stimulus dose titration. The effect of VAL vs CMZP/OX on seizure threshold was examined using multivariable regression with adjustment for confounders. The mean (standard deviation) seizure threshold at the first ECT was highest in the CMZP/OX group (243.9 [106.1] mC), intermediate in the VAL group (177.7 [97.0] mC), and lowest in the control group (138.7 [86.0 Mc]). The regression model explained 37.5% of the variance in seizure threshold at the first ECT. Age, use of CMZP/OX, and anticonvulsant dose were each significantly associated with higher seizure threshold. CMZP/OX was associated with a higher initial ECT seizure threshold than VAL. ECT practitioners may prefer to start with a higher initial stimulus dose in patients receiving CMZP/OX or VAL, and more so for CMZP/OX than VAL, to avoid repeated sub-convulsive stimuli being administered.
To compare the efficacy of inertial flywheel and heavy slow resistance training in reducing pain and improving function in patellar tendinopathy.
Randomised clinical trial.
Fourty two participants (1 woman, 41 men) with longstanding (>3 months) patellar tendinopathy were randomised into inertial flywheel resistance (N=21) or heavy slow resistance (N=21) group. Both programmes consisted of three supervised inertial flywheel or heavy slow resistance exercise sessions per week in a fitness center during 12 weeks. Primary outcome was pain and function, assessed by the Spanish Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment for Patella (VISA-P) score at 6 and 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes were activity limitation using Patient Specific Functional Scale (PSFS), health status (EuroQol-5D), patient impression of change on pain and function, adherence, adverse events, pain provocation test for the patellar tendon (numerical rating score of pain between 0 and 10), physical test, patellar tendon thickness and doppler signal on ultrasound. Secondary outcomes were taken at 0 and 12 weeks.
Both groups showed significant improvements in VISA-P scores from 0 to 12 weeks but there was not statistically significant between-group difference (P=0.506). No adverse events or side effects occurred in any of the groups during the intervention period.
Inertial flywheel resistance three times a week during 12 weeks resulted in similar pain and function benefit at 12 weeks compared with the heavy slow resistance training among people with patellar tendinopathy. Flywheel training is another exercise option for managing people with patellar tendinopathy. CLINICALTRIALS.
NCT03917849.
NCT03917849.The central role of kisspeptin (kiss) in mammalian reproduction is well established; however, its intra-gonadal role is poorly addressed. Moreover, studies investigating intra-gonadal role of kiss in fish reproduction are scanty, contradictory and inconclusive. The expression of kiss1 mRNA has been detected in the fish brain, and functionally attributed to the regulation of reproduction, feeding and behavior. The kiss1 mRNA has also been demonstrated in tissues other than the brain in some studies, but its cellular distribution and role at the tissue level have not been adequately addressed in fish. Therefore, an attempt was made in the present study to localize kiss1 in gonadal cells of the freshwater catfish, Clarias batrachus. This study reports the presence of kiss1 in the theca cells and granulosa cells of the ovarian oocytes and interstitial cells in the testis of the catfish. The role of kiss1 in the ovary and testis of the catfish was also investigated using kiss1 receptor (kiss1r) antagonist (p234). The p234 treatment decreased the production of 17β-estradiol in ovary and testosterone in the testis by lowering the activities of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase under both, in vivo as well as in vitro conditions. The p234 treatment also arrested the progression of oogenesis, as evident from the low number of advancing/advanced oocytes in the treated ovary in comparison to the control ovary. It also reduced the area and perimeter of the seminiferous tubules in the treated catfish testis. Thus, our findings suggest that kiss is involved in the regulation of gonadal steroidogenesis, independent of known endocrine/ autocrine/ paracine regulators, and thereby it accelerates gametogenic processes in the freshwater catfish. The aspects of hominin behavior responsible for Oldowan stone tool variation are the focus of much debate. There is some consensus that this variation arises from a combination of ecological and cultural factors. The diversity of raw material types and technological strategies present at Kanjera South, Kenya, provide an opportunity to examine the interacting influences of ecology and culture on Oldowan stone tool variation. Here, we combine previous analyses of raw material properties, provenance, and technology with quantitative measures of core reduction intensity and tool utilization to examine the influence of both ecological and technocultural factors on stone tool variation at Kanjera South. The results of this analysis reflect a dynamic relationship between raw material properties, provenance, and hominin mobility. Exotic raw materials are generally more resistant to edge attrition compared with those available locally, which may have incentivized their transport over long distances and more extensive reduction. Cores produced on raw materials from distant sources also exhibit more complex core reduction strategies than locally acquired materials. While this pattern is partially due to the differences in the quality of knappable stone, bifacial centripetal and multifacial core reduction strategies also arise due to the continuous transport and use of exotic raw materials. Moreover, the variation in stone tool reduction is not consistent with neutral models of stone tool transport and discard. These results demonstrate that ecological factors such as raw material provenance and physical properties have strong impacts on reduction intensity and the technological strategies used by hominins.Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) associated with autoantibody (ab) to aquaporin-4 (AQP4). There is obvious variation between regions and countries in the epidemiology, clinical features and management in NMOSD. Based on published population-based observation and cohort studies, the different clinical pattern of NMOSD has been seen in several geographical regions and some of these patients with NMOSD-like features do not fully meet the current diagnostic criteria, which is needed to consider the value of recently revised diagnostic criteria. At present, all treatments applied in NMOSD have made great progress, however, these treatments failed in AQP4 ab negative and refractory patients. Therefore, it is necessary to turn into an innovative idea and to open a new era of NMOSD treatment to develop novel and diverse targets and effective therapeutic drugs in NMOSD and to conduct the trails in large clinical samples and case-control studies to confirm their therapeutic effects on NMOSD in the future, which still remain a challenge.
