Reading fiction is argued to have benefits for our understanding of others' thoughts, feelings and desires, referred to as 'theory of mind'(ToM). We aimed to test this assumption by examining whether children's reading experience is longitudinally associated with later ToM. We examined reading experience and ToM in 236 children between the ages of 11-13 years. Participants were asked to report on their time spent reading both fiction and non-fiction at ages 11 and 13, ToM was measured at age 13. Verbal ability, reading comprehension, and reading motivation were included as control variables in all analyses. Results showed that children's self-reported fiction, but not their non-fiction reading was associated with ToM. Further, the association was concurrent but not longitudinal fiction reading and ToM at age 13 were associated but fiction reading at age 11 did not predict ToM at age 13. Our findings motivate further research on what types of reading materials might be beneficial, and the level of exposure to fiction that is needed for measurable benefits for later ToM.Despite global vaccination programs, infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) continue to cause severe disease with significant morbidity and mortality. Severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by an exuberant inflammatory response in the lung leading to acute lung injury and consequent gas exchange problems. Complete insights in this hyperinflammatory response are still lacking. However, a thorough understanding of immunopathogenesis of severe COVID-19 is needed to not only develop personalized targeted therapies, but also to identify biomarkers that predict disease outcome and therapeutic responses. Here we review the current evidence that SARS-CoV-2 activates the inflammasome, which is an intracellular multiprotein complex that leads to the activation and secretion of the interleukin (IL)-1 family cytokines, IL-1β and IL-18, and to a lytic form of cell death, called pyroptosis. Further we discuss the contribution of inflammasomes and IL-1 family cytokines to the immunopathogenesis of COVID-19 and its clinical implications. We aimed to freeze-dry the ciliate Spirostomum ambiguum, obtained from water, without fixation and observe it using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Living cells were placed on a specimen stub and frozen upon contact with a Cu block kept at either -80 °C or -100 °C. Samples were then freeze-dried and observed by SEM. In most cases, no damage to the specimen due to ice crystal formation was observed. Because of the instantaneous freezing, the metachronal wave of cilia on the body surface of the ciliate was well preserved. Approximately 70-80% of cells were preserved in the contracted state due to inevitable exposure to mechanical vibration immediately before freezing. The remaining samples were preserved in a fully-extended state. Morphometric measurements of the cell surface showed that in the extended state, ciliary rows were almost parallel to the long axis of the cell, whereas in the contracted state, they were twisted in a left-handed helix at an angle of 45-65°. The distance between adjacent cilia along a ciliary row was 1.88 ± 0.43 μm in the extended state and 1.32 ± 0.41 μm in the contracted state (mean ± SD). However, the spacing between adjacent ciliary rows remained unchanged.Due to their high gyromagnetic ratio, there is considerable interest in measuring distances and correlations involving protons, but such measurements are compounded by the simultaneous recoupling of chemical shift anisotropy (CSA). This secondary recoupling adds additional modulations to the signal intensities that ultimately lead to t1-noise and signal decay. Recently, Venkatesh et al. demonstrated that the addition of CSA refocusing periods during 1H-X dipolar recoupling led to sequences with far higher stability and performance. Herein, we describe a related effort and develop a symmetry-based recoupling sequence that continually refocuses the 1H CSA. This sequence shows superior performance to the regular and t1-noise eliminated D-HMQC sequences in the case of spin-1/2 nuclei and comparable performance to the later for half-integer quadrupoles. This paper studies a market for a medical product in which there is perfect competition among health insurers, while the good is sold by a monopolist. Individuals differ in their severity of illness and there is ex postmoral hazard. We consider two regimes one in which insurers use coinsurance rates (ad valorem reimbursements) and one in which insurers use co-payments (specific reimbursements). We show that the induced equilibrium with co-payments involves a lower producer price and a higher level of welfare for consumers even though it may imply a larger consumer price. This result provides strong support for a reference price based reimbursement policy.
Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a sleep disorder causing cognitive impairments.
We use the auditory verbal learning test (AVLT), clock drawing test (CDT), Wechsler intelligence scale for children (WISC) and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) to evaluate the memory and spatial impairments of OSHAS in 6-12 years old children patients with different severity.
A total of 137 children of snoring were enrolled following the inclusion criteria of this study. According to the apnea-hypopnea indices (AHI), they were divided into three groups. The AVLT, CDT, WISC and MoCA tests were executed by physicians. The self-rating depression scale (SDS) test was performed for depression screening.
Compared with the children in the primary snoring group, the other two groups had higher body mass index (BMI), longer periods of snoring and older age. The AHI, oxygen desaturation index (ODI) and 90% oxygen saturation (TS90%) showed increasing trends whereas the lowest blood oxygen saturation (LSaO
) showed a decreasing trend. Besides, compared with the primary snoring group, the two groups had lower immediate recall scores in AVLT.
AVLT had clinical values for evaluation of impaired memory function in OSAHS children, suggesting a correlation between cognitive impairments and nocturnal hypoxia.

Social safeness has been proposed as the individual's perception of the social world as being warmth and soothing. The lack of social safeness has been suggested as a transdiagnostic socio-emotional vulnerability for several mental health difficulties. To date there was no study addressing experiences of social safeness in adolescents.
To validate and study the psychometric properties of the Social Safeness and Pleasure Scale to Portuguese adolescents from community and residential care homes.
A total of 731 Portuguese adolescents from community and residential youth care homes participated on this study. The community sample was composed of adolescents recruited from regular schools (208 boys; 224 girls). The residential youth care sample was composed of adolescents placed in residential care homes (145 boys; 154 girls).
A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted, and measurement invariance investigated.
A one-factor solution presented a good fit across all samples and proved to be invariant (configural, metric, scalar and strict measurement invariance). Moreover, internal consistency values were excellent for all samples (α>0.93) and evidence for construct validity in relation to external variables was found. Means comparisons revealed significant differences between all tested groups. Community adolescents reported higher social safeness in comparison to the adolescents placed in residential care. Within both samples, boys scored higher in the SSPS-A when compared to girls.
These findings provide evidence on the SSPS-A validity and its use across diverse adolescent samples.

The association between serum zinc (Zn) levels and coronary artery disease (CAD) has been elucidated, but no previous meta-analysis was done to provide firm evidence. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was aimed to investigate the possible association between serum Zn levels and CAD patients.
Relevant studies were identified using various electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) searching up to May 2021. The Review Manager V5.3 was used to calculate the pooled standard mean difference (SMD) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) using the random-effects model.
A total of 10 studies with 614 cases (CAD patients) and 508 controls were included in this meta-analysis based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The pooled results of the meta-analysis showed that CAD patients had significantly lower levels of Zn [SMD (95% CI) -3.76 (-5.21, -2.31), Z=5.08, P<0.00001; I
=98%, P<0.00001] compared with control subjects. The statistical evaluations of Begg's and Egger's tests indicated that there was no publication bias.
The findings of the meta-analysis suggest that relatively low levels of Zn might have a potential role in the pathogenesis of CAD. Rapamycin Furthermore, large-scale observational studies are highly recommended in order to fully understand the association between Zn status and CAD.

Systemic candidiasis is produced by Candida albicans or non-albicans Candida species, opportunistic fungi that produce both superficial and invasive infections. Despite the availability of a wide range of antifungal agents for the treatment of candidiasis, failure of therapy is observed frequently, which opens new avenues in the field of alternative therapeutic strategies.
The effects of p,p'-methoxyl-diphenyl diselenide [(MeOPhSe)
], a synthetic organic selenium (organochalcogen) compound, were investigated on virulence factors of C. krusei and compared with its antifungal effects on the virulence factors related to adhesion to cervical epithelial cell surfaces with C. albicans.
(MeOPhSe)
, a compound non-toxic in epithelial (HeLa) and fibroblastic (Vero) cells, inhibited the growth in a dose-dependent manner and changed the kinetics parameters of C. krusei and, most importantly, extending the duration of lag phase of growth, inhibiting biofilm formation, and changing the structure of biofilm. Also, (MeOPhSe)
reduced C. albicans and C. krusei adherence to cervical epithelial cells, an important factor for the early stage of the Candida-host interaction. The reduction was 37.24±2.7% in C. krusei (p=0.00153) and 32.84±3.2% in C. albicans (p=0.0072) at 20µM (MeOPhSe)
, and the effect is in a concentration-dependent manner. Surprisingly, the antifungal potential on adhesion was similar between both species, indicating the potential of (MeOPhSe)
as a promising antifungal drug against different Candida infections.
Overall, we demonstrated the potential of (MeOPhSe)
as an effective antifungal drug against the virulence factors of Candida species.
