In the present perspective, emergence of resistant strains of Leishmania donovani and severe side effects resulting from the use of conventional anti-leishmanial therapies present an urgent need for developing novel agents against this parasite. We have explored the effectiveness of secondary plant metabolites as alternative choices in the treatment for visceral leishmaniasis (vl).

The plant Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae) was collected from the West Bengal State University Campus, Barasat, West Bengal, India. The leaves of this plant were extracted by different solvents, such as ethyl acetate, water, petroleum ether and hexane. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was also carried out for the identification of compounds in the hexane soluble fraction (PHFd) with substantial anti-leishmanial activities. The antipromastigote activity and cytotoxicity of this fraction were evaluated by the tetrazolium MTT assay. Other biochemical and physiological parameters were studied by microsctional phytochemical and pharmacological studies on the antiprotozoal applications of P. hysterophorus.Controlling the emission of urban passenger transport modes has become one of the most important tasks of governing urban air pollution. Most strategies only focused on carbon emission, whereas neglecting the influences of other pollutants (CO, HC, NOx, PM2.5), especially for upstream emissions from electricity generation caused by the electricity consumed during the operation of electrified transport modes. Based on the multinomial logit model (MNL), this study firstly calculated and evaluated the emission reduction effects brought about by the implementation of targeted emission taxes on different transport modes from the perspective of whole fuel cycle. Taking Jiangning District as an example, our research found that the policy implementing targeted emission tax for different transport modes can not only bring reduce 13.104 tons of CO, 0.327 tons of HC, 0.568 tons of NOx, and 0.140 tons of PM2.5, but also 26,726.82 (euro) of eco-environmental benefits for the treatment of air pollution. Our study can provide useful insights for shifting the structure of urban passenger transport modes, especially promoting the transfer of private cars to the urban green transport systems, to alleviate urban air pollution by formulating effective emission reduction strategies.Directly discharging low-concentration rare-earth wastewater not only wastes rare-earth resources but also pollutes the environment. In this study, the biosorption behavior of Serratia marcescens for Eu(III) was studied with emphasis on the optimization of adsorption conditions, adsorption kinetics, and adsorption isotherm. It was shown that the maximum adsorption capacity of Serratia marcescens reached 115.36 mg·g-1 under an optimal condition, indicating the good adsorption capability of Serratia marcescens for Eu(III). The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm analysis showed that the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating that the adsorption of Eu(III) by Serratia marcescens is a monolayer chemical adsorption process. In addition, the adsorption mechanism was investigated by using characterizations of zeta potential, scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. It was revealed that the adsorption of Eu(III) by S. marcescens is a combination of electrostatic attraction, ions exchange and coordination. These findings indicate that S. marcescens can be used as a potential biosorbent to recover rare earth elements from rare earth wastewater.Bronchopneumonia is the most common infectious disease in children, and it seriously endangers children's health. In this paper, a deep neural network combining long short-term memory (LSTM) layers and fully connected layers was proposed to predict the prevalence of bronchopneumonia in children in Chengdu based on environmental factors and previous prevalence rates. The mean square error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and Pearson correlation coefficient (R) were used to detect the performance of the deep learning model. The values of MSE, MAE, and R in the test dataset are 0.0051, 0.053, and 0.846, respectively. The results show that the proposed model can accurately predict the prevalence of bronchopneumonia in children. We also compared the proposed model with three other models, namely, a fully connected (FC) layer neural network, a random forest model, and a support vector machine. The results show that the proposed model achieves better performance than the three other models by capturing time series and mitigating the lag effect.Growing economic development and substantial demographic shifts may have a momentous consequence on environmental quality in a number of African countries. Consequently, this recent study offers the opportunity to explore the nexus among unobserved influential economic indicators and environmental quality (measured through CO2 emissions) in a panel of 26 African economies spanning from 1990 to 2018. The aggregated panel is sub-classified into net exporters (NEC) and net importers (NIC) of embodied carbon. Considering existence of cross-section reliance and heterogeneity issues, all observed series are preliminarily confirmed stationary and cointegrated. Further, key outcomes from the common correlated effect Pooled Mean Group (CCEPMG) estimator through cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lag (CSARDL) approach showed that (i) economic growth and fossil fuel energy use stimulate environmental degradation among all panels, (ii) urbanization and trade openness enhance environmental quality in NEC panel whivironment should therefore collectively address these factors during policy growth. The extensive development of agriculture in urban and peri-urban wastelands polluted with several trace elements (TE) poses risks to human health through contaminated food products. The objective was to explore the accumulation of TE in the various parts of vegetable crop plants (tomato, French bean, radish, potato, spinach, and leek) intercropped with phytostabilizing plant species (ryegrass and white clover, respectively). Field studies were conducted in a multicontaminated French urban wasteland with Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, and an alkaline soil pH. Analyses of the respective non-edible parts of monocultured vegetable crops showed accumulation of all TE, mostly Zn, then Pb and Cu, and finally Cd. The corresponding TE accumulation factors (soil to plant) were all below 0.25. In the edible parts, average concentrations for TE were above the limit values, according to European and Chinese standards. TE contents in the phytostabilizing species chosen were in the same orders of magnitude and the same ranking as described for vegetable crops and most accumulation was in the roots. Unexpectedly, the presence of the phytostabilizing plants had a very strong positive impact on the soil to plant accumulation factor. Moreover, the edible plant parts were poorly impacted by the co-cropping with phytostabilizing plants. The aim of this study was to access the Mn contamination in soil, forages, and animals. Heavy metal pollution is a matter of prime significance in natural environment. Through food chain, toxicity of heavy metals and their bioaccumulation potential are transferred into humans. Higher concentrations of metallic compounds are toxic to living organisms but these are essential to maintain body metabolism. Intake of food crops polluted with heavy metals is chief food chain channel for human exposure. Animals are exposed to heavy metal stress by the intake of richly contaminated food crops; those are chief part of food chain. Samples of soil, plant, animal blood, hair, and feces were collected to find contamination through wet digestion process in lab and metal analysis. Different forages were collected to study Mn content that was our major concern in this study. The present findings also emphasized on the assessment of bio-concentration factor (BCF). Other significant indices of mobility and pollution of metal were also calculated, i.e. pollution load index (PLI), daily intake of metal (DIM), health risk index (HRI), and enrichment factor (EF). The experimentation result showed different concentrations of metal in different seasons. The Mn concentration in forages was 20.01-28.29 mg/kg and in soil was 5.27-8.90 mg/kg. Soil samples showed higher level of (PLI) Pollution load index. Bio-concentration of MN was 2.59-4.21 mg/kg. It can be concluded that regular monitoring of the metal is essential to evaluate the contamination status. Mn contents were in the safe limits in soil and plants; however, its toxic level was observed in animals.Although considerable research has examined the influence of parent-adolescent relationships on the sexual health of adolescents, there is a great need for research to understand the influence of fathers on their children's HIV sexual risk behavior, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined how the residence and the involvement of fathers are related to their children's HIV sexual risk and alcohol consumption behaviors. A cross-sectional survey was completed by 175 sixth-grade adolescents in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Analyses showed that adolescents living with their fathers had fewer sexual partners (B = - 0.606, SE = 0.299, p = .043) and consumed alcohol less frequently (B = - 0.642, SE = 0.294, p = .029). AZD9291 manufacturer Adolescents who spent more quality days with their fathers in the past 30 days had fewer sexual partners (B = - 0.103, SE = 0.039, p = .008) and had condomless sex less frequently (B = - 0.097, SE = 0.047, p = 0.041). It was also found that there were significant father-residence × child-gender interactions on sexual debut (B = 1.132, SE = 0.564, p = .045) and on frequency of condomless sex (B = - 2.140, SE = 0.924, p = .021). These interactions indicate that boys living with their fathers were less likely to have had vaginal intercourse than girls and that girls living with their fathers were less likely to have unprotected sex than boys. This study highlights the importance of South African fathers' roles in their adolescent children's HIV sexual risk and alcohol drinking behaviors and the need to promote father-child relationships for adolescent health. The results suggest that health programs aiming to reduce South African adolescents' HIV sexual risk behaviors and alcohol consumption consider strategies that target their fathers.People who inject drugs (PWID) play a critical role in injection-naïve individuals transitioning to injection drug use. We investigated factors associated with future likelihood of initiating injection-naïve individuals using multivariable logistic regression among 418 PWID in rural Appalachia (Cabell County, West Virginia). Less than 10% reported they were likely to initiate someone in the future. Acquiring syringes from a syringe services program was associated with decreased odds of being likely to initiate someone in the future (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.46, 95% CI 0.23, 0.95), while having previously initiated someone into injection drug use was associated with increased odds (aOR 8.65, 95% CI 4.07, 18.41). Among our sample of PWID in Appalachia, a small proportion reported that they would be likely to initiate an injection-naïve individual in the future. Efforts to reduce injection initiation assistance should focus on this subpopulation of PWID who indicate a willingness to engage in this behavior.
