Although many interventions are implemented to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs) in plastic surgery, their supporting evidence is inconsistent.

The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy of methods for decreasing SSIs in plastic surgery.

A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to compare the effects of SSI prevention methods. link3 All the studies were assessed for quality of evidence according to the GRADE assessment.

Fifty Level 1 randomized controlled trials were included. The most common interventions for preventing SSIs were antibiotic prophylaxis, showering, prepping, draping, and the use of dressings. Current evidence suggests that antibiotic prophylaxis is largely unnecessary and overused in many plastic surgical procedures, with the exception of head and neck oncologic, oral craniofacial, and traumatic hand surgeries.

Efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis in plastic surgery is dependent on surgery type. There is a lack evidence that showering and prepping with chlorohexidine and povidone reduces SSIs.

With the increased use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) in breast reconstruction, the number of available materials has increased. There is relative paucity of high-quality outcomes data for use of different ADMs.

The goal of this study is to compare the outcomes between a human (HADM) and a bovine ADM (BADM) in implant-based breast reconstruction.

We conducted a prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial to evaluate differences in outcomes between HADM and BADM for patients undergoing immediate tissue expander breast reconstruction. We excluded patients with prior radiation to the index breast. Patient and surgical characteristics were collected and analyzed.

From April 2011 to June 2016, a total of 90 patients were randomized to a mesh group, with 68 patients [HADM, 36 patients (55 breasts); BADM, 32 patients (48 breasts)] included in the final analysis. Baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. No significant differences in overall complication rates were identified between HADM (n=14, 25%) and BADM (n= 13, 27%); p=0.85. Similar trends were identified for major complications and complications requiring reoperation. Tissue expander loss was identified in 7% of HADM (n=4), and 17% of BADM group (n=8), p=0.14.

We demonstrated similar complication and implant loss rates among patients undergoing immediate tissue expander breast reconstruction using HADM or BADM. Regardless of what material is used, careful patient selection and counseling, and cost consideration help to improve outcomes and sustainability in immediate breast reconstruction.

The year 2019 represents the midpoint, making it a critical time to assess countries' progress towards this target. This review aims to identify all national salt reduction initiatives around the world in 2019, and to quantify countries' progress in achieving the salt reduction target. Relevant data were identified through searches of peer-reviewed and gray literature, supplemented with responses from prefilled country questionnaires sent to known country leads of salt reduction or salt champions, WHO regional representatives, and international experts to request further information. Core characteristics of each country's strategy, including evaluations of program impact, were extracted and summarized. A total of 96 national salt reduction initiatives were identified, representing a 28% increase in the number reported in 2014. About 90% of the initiatives were multifaceted in approach, and 60% had a regulat.

However, the positive health and environmental outcomes are not guaranteed-they depend on how seafood is prepared and served and whether it is sourced from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture industries.

We examined the availability and nutritional attributes of seafood meals at chain restaurants in the United States. We assessed nutritional attributes by store type and geography. We also assessed menu labeling for species, production methods, and origin.

The study population was 159 chain restaurants with 100,948 branch locations in the United States. Data were harvested from online restaurant menus, and the nutritional profile of seafood meals was calculated.

We aimed to assess the value of liver biopsy in the evaluation of abnormal liver tests.

We analyzed consecutive liver biopsy specimens performed for evaluation of unexplained abnormal liver tests from 2014 to 2018. Diagnoses were categorized histologically and clinically. We determined whether histologic examination led to a specific diagnosis and whether prebiopsy laboratory variables predicted the underlying etiology.

Among the 383 liver biopsy specimens included, chronic hepatitis was the most common histologic (25%) and clinical (17%) diagnosis. Liver biopsy led to a clinical diagnosis in 87% of patients. The most likely clinical diagnoses were autoimmune hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and drug-induced liver injury (38, 33, and 32 patients, respectively). Using sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values, we found that liver tests were not predictive of a specific diagnosis. In patients with no history of liver disease or clinical features of portal hypertension, biopsy specimens revealed histologic cirrhosis in 5% of patients.

The association of moderate hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) (15-30 μmol/L) with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has been challenged by the lack of benefit of vitamin supplementation to lowering homocysteine. Consequently, the results of interventional studies have confused the debate regarding the management of patients with intermediate/severe HHcy.

We sought to evaluate the association of intermediate (30-100 μmol/L) and severe (>100 μmol/L) HHcy related to vitamin deficiencies and/or inherited disorders with CVD outcomes.

And for non-model organisms, due to the lack of transcriptional data, many existing methods cannot identify them. Therefore, in addition to using deoxyribonucleic acid-based and RNA-based features, we also proposed a hybrid framework based on the stacking strategy to identify ncRNAs, and we innovatively added eight features based on predicted peptides. The proposed framework was based on stacking two-layer classifier which combined random forest (RF), LightGBM, XGBoost and logistic regression (LR) models. We used this framework to build two types of models. For cross-species ncRNAs identification model, we tested it on six different species human, mouse, zebrafish, fruit fly, worm and Arabidopsis. Compared with other tools, our model was the best in datasets of Arabidopsis, worm and zebrafish with the accuracy of 98.36%, 99.65% and 94.12%. For performance metrics analysis, the datasets of the six species were considered as a whole set, and the sensitivity, accuracy, precision and F1 values of our model were the best. For the plant-specific ncRNAs identification model, the average values of the six metrics of the two experiments were all greater than 95%, which demonstrated it can be used to identify ncRNAs in plants. The above indicates that the hybrid framework we designed is universal between animals and plants and has significant advantages in the identification of cross-species ncRNAs.Over the past decade, the gut microbiota has emerged as a key component in regulating brain processes and behavior. Diet is one of the major factors involved in shaping the gut microbiota composition across the lifespan. However, whether and how diet can affect the brain via its effects on the microbiota is only now beginning to receive attention. Several mechanisms for gut-to-brain communication have been identified, including microbial metabolites, immune, neuronal, and metabolic pathways, some of which could be prone to dietary modulation. Animal studies investigating the potential of nutritional interventions on the microbiota-gut-brain axis have led to advancements in our understanding of the role of diet in this bidirectional communication. In this review, we summarize the current state of the literature triangulating diet, microbiota, and host behavior/brain processes and discuss potential underlying mechanisms. Additionally, determinants of the responsiveness to a dietary intervention and evidence for the microbiota as an underlying modulator of the effect of diet on brain health are outlined.
