However, the association cannot be interpreted unambiguously as an exposure effect because a common set of genetic factors can simultaneously contribute to increased liability for symptoms of anxiety, negative affect, and the perception of discrimination. The present study elucidates the association between discrimination and anxiety/negative affect by implementing strict genetic controls in a large sample of adults. We used data from the biomarker project of the Study of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS), a national probability sample of noninstitutionalized, English-speaking respondents aged 25 to 74 y. Participants who consented to provide genetic data were biologically unrelated and of European ancestry as determined by genotype principal components analysis (n = 1,146). A single structural regression model was fit to the data with three measures of discrimination specified to load onto a latent factor and six measures of anxiety and negative affect specified to load onto a second latent factor. After accounting for potential genetic confounds-polygenic scores for anxiety, depression, and neuroticism and the first five genetic principal components-greater discrimination was associated with greater anxiety/negative affect (β = 0.53, SE = 0.04, P less then 0.001). Findings suggest that measures of perceived discrimination should be considered environmental risk factors for anxiety/negative affect rather than indices of genetic liability for anxiety, depression, or neuroticism. Clinical interventions and prevention measures should focus on ways to mitigate the impact of discrimination to improve mental health at the population level.The purpose of this study is to compare FDG PET/CT and CT performance in guiding percutaneous biopsies with histological confirmation of lung lesions. Methods We prospectively evaluated 341 patients of whom 216 underwent FDG PET/CT-guided biopsy and 125 underwent CT-guided biopsy. The pathology results, lesion size, complications and rebiopsy rate in the two groups were evaluated. Results Of the 216 biopsies with PET/CT guidance, histology demonstrated 170 lesions (78.7%) to be malignant, and 46 (21.3%) to be benign; In the CT guided group, out of 125 lesions, 77 (61.6%) were malignant and 48 (38.4%) were benign (p = 0.001). Inconclusive results prompted the need for a second biopsy in 18 patients, 13/125 (10.4%) in the CT group and 5 /216 (2.3%) in PET group (p 0.001). Complications rates were pneumothorax (13.2%), hemothorax (0.8%) and hemoptysis (0.6%). No life-threatening adverse events or fatalities were reported. The difference between complication rates among the 2 groups was not significant (P = 0.6). Malignant lesions showed greater mean size than benign lesions regardless of the group (P = 0.015). Still, the practice of mass quarantine in reception centres and asylum camps has been criticised for its discrimination of refugees and asylum seekers. Building on the concept of othering, this article argues that processes of othering are structurally anchored in German asylum regulations and they have further pervaded public health measures against COVID-19. The practice of mass quarantine made the negative consequences of exclusionary othering for public health particularly noticeable. In the light of recent data indicating this measure to be epidemiologically, legally and ethically insufficient, we apply the concept of othering to public health and discuss (1) exclusionary, (2) inclusionary and (3) diversity-sensitive approaches to public health. We finally conclude that a shift of perspective from exclusion to inclusion, from subordination to empowerment and from silencing to participation is urgently required.Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are an exceptionally versatile class of medication, and their glycemic and nonglycemic benefits could help millions of patients with type 2 diabetes.
