Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
A tandem double buggy can be a great choice when you have twins or children who are close in age. They're narrower than side-by-side buggies and are ideal for maneuvering tight spaces such as doorways, on public transport and on rough terrain.
Many convert into travel systems that include two carrycots or car seats. They are typically heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.
Convertible
There are many options for adding a second seat or changing a single stroller into a double. The UPPAbaby Vista V2 is a big, beautiful stroller that can easily be converted from a single to a double by adding the rumble seat (available separately). It's costly and less maneuverable than other dual strollers due to the fact that the second seat goes behind the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow offers a similar option but lacks storage underneath the seat when used as a double stroller.
Other options include all-terrain twin buggies as well as fixed-wheel joggers that can accommodate two children. These tend to be more expensive, however they're designed for long trips over rough terrain and can have a higher resale value.
Independent recline of the seat
If you are looking for a double stroller which can accommodate children of different ages, you will need one with independent seat recliner for both seats. This allows your child of a higher age to relax while the baby is in a bassinet, and the reverse is true.
Consider the width of your stroller to determine the ease of you to maneuver through doors and on public transportation. If you have very narrow doors, it could be a good idea to consider a side-byside pushchair, such as the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the benefit of having a footprint similar to a single buggy, however it can accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies tend to be longer than side by side models, and therefore are more difficult to maneuver up and down kerbs. However, they can accommodate more combinations of seats/carrycots/car seats and are an excellent choice for twins and siblings of various ages. They are also more expensive than single-to-double buggies but are worth the investment if you plan to keep it for years and will retain a decent amount of resale value should you decide to sell it off after your children have grown out of it.
This feature allows you to place your child in the most comfortable position for naps and observation. This is important if your child is in the back seat and would like to take a nap while the older child prefers to sit up and observe the surroundings.
Certain brands have a distinctive design that allows the back seat of their vehicles to recline to a position that is nearly flat, which is ideal for newborns. The iCandy Orange, for example is a stadium-style seat that can be reclined to various positions. It also has a UPF 50+ canopy and windows that peek out.
Larger than twin buggies
They are ideal for siblings of different age groups, and they allow you to get around without having to worry about your children touching. They are usually a little bit longer, with one seat behind the other. The seats can be reclined fully for newborns or in an upright position for toddlers.
A popular choice is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which is the tiniest side-by-side model available and features an identical footprint to a single buggy. It features an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push, and a handbrake which is useful on steep hills. It is suitable from birth and is compatible with a range of car seats and carrycots, meaning it makes an excellent travel system.
lightweight double stroller is another option. It can be folded in duo or mono mode in a single click. Its innovative frame can be expanded to accommodate a second chair and can be used with up to two car seats or carrycots which makes it an ideal option for older siblings that want to sit together and share the view. It's a bit larger than other models, but it still feels light and has soft suspension for curbs.
There are a lot of 3-wheeler inline tandems that are available such as Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies for instance they provide stability and quick steering. Often these can be folded down to the size of a single buggy, which is helpful if you struggle with storage at home or need to lug it in and out of the car on public transport.
It's important to keep in mind that a wide double buggy will be heavier and bulkier than a compact single buggy Make sure that it's what you require before you purchase. You'll have to get it on and off subways, trains and buses regularly so it needs to be easy to operate and manage. You may also have to juggle it on and off the car seat when taking your children to school or nursery so you'll need to ensure it can be easily manoeuvred within small spaces.
The best time to start is when you are born.
If you're expecting twins, or have a second child after your first, you're likely to need to find a stroller that can accommodate the whole family. Double buggies are generally a bit heavier, bulkier and cost more than single strollers, but they are also easier to maneuver through narrower doors or around obstacles such as curbs. Many double buggies are compatible with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an add-on). This allows you to transport three children at the same time.
Tandem pushchairs put one child ahead of the other. They're a good choice if your children are similar in age and are good friends. They're not foolproof. Siblings sitting side-by-side can punch or kick each other and children with different heights could argue over who sits higher. This issue can be addressed by a tandem high-low model that elevates the seat in the back. Your older child will not be sitting at the lowest part of the car and won't get much of an opportunity to see.
The iCandy Wave is a great choice for parents looking for an easy-to-use convertible double buggy that can fit both a newborn in a carrycot as well as an older child in the main seat. It has a clever frame which can be expanded in size when you add a second child seat. It also folds flat for compact storage. The cushioned seats are comfortable, the straps easy to fasten, and the buckles are among the best we've seen on any of our tests. You can recline both seats independently, and the canopies are big and spacious with UPF 50+ protection as well as windows that can be seen from a distance.
The only drawback of the iCandy is that it's a little expensive however, a good tandem will last a long time and will retain its resale value. So you'll likely recoup some of the cost over the long term. It doesn't have the same selection of seating configurations that some of our other top choices however the iCandy is a great choice for families that don't want to spend a fortune.
