In addition, exogenous MeJA increased the contents of endogenous JA and ABA, and the transcript levels of genes involved in their biosynthesis and responsiveness, thereby further regulating the transcript levels of defense response genes. These findings suggest that exogenous MeJA increases salt stress-induced growth inhibition and prioritizes the defensive responses (e.g. antioxidant defense, osmotic adjustment, and ion homeostasis) of N. tangutorum. These effects may be related to the amplification of jasmonic acid (JA) and abscisic acid (ABA) signals.
Although bilateral internal thoracic artery (BITA) grafting is associated with improved survival, many surgeons are reluctant to use this technique, especially in female patients, due to its greater complexity and potential increased risk of sternal infection. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of male and female patients who underwent BITA grafting.
We evaluated at the early outcome and late mortality, 551 female versus 2525 male patients who underwent isolated BITA grafting between January 1996 and December 2011. To adjust for differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, a multivariate risk analysis and propensity score matching were performed. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed for the entire cohort and for the matched cohort.
Female patients were older and were more likely than males to have congestive heart failure, unstable angina pectoris, and diabetes. Sternal infection was more frequent in females than males (3.3% vs. 1.8%; p = .04). Differences were not observed in operative mortality (2.9% vs. 1.9%; p = .15) and stroke incidence (3.4% vs. 2.6; p = .30). After multivariate risk analysis and propensity score matching, the female gender was not found to be a predictor of worse outcomes. There was no difference in median survival amongfemale and male patients (14.3 and 14.2 years, respectively; p = .68).
Our results support the routine use of BITA grafting in proper selected female patients who undergo myocardial revascularization.

There is a lack of research on the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) in Singapore. The aims of our study were to (a) estimate the prevalence of EDs, risk status, and help-seeking behaviors among adults in Singapore, (b) examine gender differences between ED status groups, and (c) characterize clinical profiles of ED status groups.
We administered a cross-sectional survey that included a validated EDs screening tool to adults in Singapore.
A total of 797 Singaporean adults ages 21-77 years completed the ED screen. The majority of participants screened positive for a current DSM-5 clinical ED (6.2%), other specified feeding or ED (37.0%) or at high risk of developing an ED (19.5%). Only 1.6% of those who screened positive for an ED reported currently being in treatment. The ratio of males to females who screened positive for an ED was nearly 11. The clinical profiles of ED groups were consistent with the clinical presentations found in Western nations.
This is the first study in Singapore to estimate the prevalence of EDs in a large sample of adults. Results highlight the urgent need for more ED research and expansion of prevention and treatment programs to address the high prevalence of ED psychopathology in Singapore.

Multiple genera of pathogenic fungi have been reported to cause DCFI. Herein, we report three rare cases of Pleosporales deep cutaneous infection in a southern Taiwan medical center. We evaluated the clinical manifestations, histopathological findings, pathogens, treatments and outcomes. The patients were a 77-year-old woman, a 78-year-old woman and an 81-year-old man, who lived in rural tropical areas. The lesions were erythematous noduloplaques with dark spots located on the upper extremities. Sequence-based identification showed three different fungi of the order Pleosporales, namely Nigrograna mackinnonii, Medicopsis romeroi and Parathyridaria percutanea. All three cases received 200 mg of oral itraconazole daily for 10, 2 and 8 months, respectively. Two of them are free of diseases to date, and one improved partially but did not complete the treatment. Molecular tools are helpful for the identification of DCFI to exact species, which is key to successful treatment.Hypoxia-induced polymerization of sickle hemoglobin and the related ion diffusion across cell membrane can lead to changes in cell dielectric properties, which can potentially serve as label-free, diagnostic biomarkers for sickle cell disease. This article presents a microfluidic-based approach with on-chip gas control for the impedance spectroscopy of suspended cells within the frequency range of 40 Hz to 110 MHz. A comprehensive bioimpedance of sickle cells under both normoxia and hypoxia is achieved rapidly (within ∼7 min) and is appropriated by small sample volumes (∼2.5 μL). Analysis of the sensing modeling is performed to obtain optimum conditions for dielectric spectroscopy of sickle cell suspensions and for extraction of single cell properties from the measured impedance spectra. selleck inhibitor The results of sickle cells show that upon hypoxia treatment, cell interior permittivity and conductivity increase, while cell membrane capacitance decreases. Moreover, the relative changes in cell dielectric parameters are found to be dependent on the sickle and fetal hemoglobin levels. In contrast, the changes in normal red blood cells between the hypoxia and normoxia states are unnoticeable. The results of sickle cells may serve as a reference to design dielectrophoresis-based cell sorting and electrodeformation testing devices that require cell dielectric characteristics as input parameters. The demonstrated method for dielectric characterization of single cells from the impedance spectroscopy of cell suspensions can be potentially applied to other cell types and under varied gas conditions.
