Car Key Repair - How to Fix a Dead Remote
The car remotes are a wonderful convenience for drivers. They can unlock doors, access trunks, and even start the engine. These remotes can stop working at the most inconvenient moments.
Before you go to the dealer, you can try a few quick solutions in case your key fob isn't functioning. These steps may save you money.
Keyless Entry System
Rather than needing to fumble around with keys in your purse or pocket, you can simply walk up to your car, push an icon on the key fob, and then open the doors and start the engine. It's a simple function that makes driving a car more relaxing and safe. The keyless entry system, like any other device, can be damaged through repeated use or by other factors. If you have problems with your system, you can either visit the dealer or call an locksmith.
A keyless entry system operates by sending radio signals, and then looking for a response signal from a key fob. If the system detects the signal, the vehicle's doors are opened and the computer on board is activated. Some systems have a second transmitter on the trunk of the car that can be opened when you put your foot beneath it.
Each key fob comes with an individual digital identification code, which is assigned by the manufacturer. A specific process of technology called "programming" is used to configure the fob with the car's specific system. This involves turning the ignition of the car repeatedly in a certain sequence, and could require pulling buttons or levers, or removing the fuse.
Once a key fob has been programmed to your specific car's keyless entry system, it transmits its digital identification code along with a function code that instructs the car what to do (lock in, unlock, or open the trunk). The car's receiver verifies that the transmitter is who it claims to be through an authentication and encryption procedure. If it's authorized the computer on board unlocks the vehicle and starts the engine.
A clever criminal could intercept and use the code transmitted between the keyfob and the vehicle. This would require a specific device to record the transmission and then retransmit it later in the event that the system doesn't anticipate it. To combat this issue, the majority of keyless entry systems use the rolling code method that ensures that every new signal from the transmitter received by the vehicle has a different counter than the previous one.
Batteries
The most frequent cause of car remotes key fobs not working is a dead battery. If you have an extra key fob it's a simple and inexpensive fix. Learn Even more are powered by watch-style batteries, which can be purchased at big-box stores or hardware stores for less than $10. A quick search of the internet or your car's owner manual should provide instructions on how to take apart the fob that you have been using and swap out the battery.
After you've removed your battery, make sure not to disturb any of the circuits or antennas in the case. They're likely to hold the key fob's programming to your specific car, and messing with them will make it unprogrammable (and probably not work). If you have to move them, do so with care because some key fobs come with fasteners that easily pop open and scatter key fob parts throughout your living space.
The case of a majority of key fobs has one screwdriver hole. To open it, you can use a pry tool. To begin you must push the tool along the outside edge of the case as you would do when peeling an orange or apple. Don't apply too much pressure as the case of the key fob is typically composed of plastic and is susceptible to breaking or cracking when you exert too excessive force.
Make sure you match the size and type of battery to the key fob when you replace it. Some fobs require two batteries, while others have just one. The wrong battery can render your remote key fob ineffective.
After the new battery is in place, test your key fob once more to see if the battery has fixed the issue. If not, you'll need to determine whether your device has an issue that's more complex that requires a professional diagnosis and repair. You may need to have the fob reset at an authorized dealer or purchase an entirely new one.
Buttons
The tiny buttons on your key fob are pretty small, and are packed with delicate electronics. It's not a surprise that they will occasionally fail. The good news is, when your car's key button stops functioning, there's usually something you can do to fix it yourself.
The most frequent reason why the car remote stops functioning is due to dirt or crud has gotten stuck between the buttons. To clear this up remove the batteries and clean each button with a cotton swab coated with ruby alcohol. Be sure to dry them completely before replacing the batteries.
It's possible that your key fob was damaged in some way, such as being dropped on concrete or accidentally scratched. If that's the case, using an alternative key fob to test its functionality might reveal that it has been damaged and has to be replaced.
The door lock sensor might have been unable to function in your vehicle. It's a tiny metal piece that is attached to the door lock button on your key fob and it's not unusual for the sensor to break following long-term use or exposure to weather conditions. To reactivate the sensor simply press your key button several times without locking or unlocking your doors to reset it.
If all else fails, you can always test the operation of the spare key by attempting to lock and unlock your doors with it. If the spare key does not work, it may be necessary to find an emergency locksmith who can provide auto key repair to make your remote work again.
If the car key button is working but still not locking or unlocking your vehicle, you can try reprogramming your computer system. If you've had the same key fob for a time, it may need to be reprogrammed every couple of months to continue working with your vehicle. It's not the ideal situation however it's much better than having to replace your remote completely.
