How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme cold or heat can cause the car key to not function properly. Take a moment before replacing it.
It's a major pain when the keys to your car fail and they happen at the most difficult times! You can fix a broken key without the need to purchase a new one.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs let us open trunks, doors, and tailgates with ease without the need for a physical car key. Some key fobs even have a built-in key that can be used to start cars. These key fobs are powered by a small battery. If the battery dies, then the key fob can no longer transmit the signal needed to start the vehicle. There are a variety of methods to fix a dead vehicle key fob.
First, you must find out if your key fob is dead. If it appears to be dead, you will have to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to pry it apart. It is important not to apply too much force, or you could damage the fob. It's also important to be sure you're replacing the correct type of battery. Some models may require a different battery. Find out the kind of battery your vehicle requires by consulting the owner's manual, or visit an Interstate All Battery Center and ask a specialist to assist you.
If the key fob actually isn't dead, you can sometimes revive it by bringing it closer to your vehicle. Most key fobs use RFID (radio frequency identification) which operates at a short range. The ignition system needs to be able to detect the signal. You can unlock your car or even start it if you move few inches closer.
Many automobile manufacturers have backup systems that can be activated if the battery on the key fob is low. For instance, many Ford models come with a designated slot for the key fob which will turn on the engine if inserted correctly. Go through the owner's manual to find instructions on finding this slot and how to insert the key fob. If you're not able to start your car using this method, contact roadside assistance.
Broken Key Ring
The chip in the key fob is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. If the chip is damaged or if there are programming errors, the key will not be able transmit the correct identification code and your car will not start. In some cases the problem with a defective transponder key may also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear on the key shell or contact pads.
There are a lot of warning indicators on your dashboard if a keyfob has trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These could include errors messages, a flashing light or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you observe any of these signs, you should contact your local locksmith immediately for key fob repair or replacement.
If you have a lot of keys, it is easy to break your key ring. This can cause the fob to crack in half. This is one of the main causes of broken car keys. It is possible to apply super glue on both sides of the crack and gently press them together to fix the issue. Make use of a gel-type glue that drys slowly in order to avoid drips or runniness.
If this method does not work, it's important to call a professional locksmith as soon as possible in order to prevent any further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith with the right qualifications can to repair or replace your fob swiftly and ensure that the ignition as well as door locks aren't damaged during the process.
It can be frustrating when your key fob is damaged. But, it's not an excuse to panic or get angry. You can take proactive steps to decrease the likelihood of your key fob failing in the near future. This includes regular maintenance, key protectors and having an extra. Quicksmith's team is available to help you if your key fob breaks.
www.thekeylab.co.uk of my MK5 keyfobs has snapped off the tiny key ring loop at the top, where it connects to the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the surface to make it more durable. But I'm guessing that's not helping.
I've also tried wrapping the broken portion of the ring in clear tape, but it isn't doing any good. It's really too bad because I use the rings to hold my keys on the tiny mini-splitring which holds the larger split ring for the other keyfobs.
If the case for the key fob is damaged It's usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). There are online kits available however they're only an interim solution. It may be quicker to have it repaired by a professional. Alternately, you may be able to locate a replacement case at the home improvement store or locksmith. These cases aren't as expensive as the new key fob.
