Car Key Button Repair
A damaged car key button is frustrating. car key fob repairs may need to contact the 24 hour Locksmith Service or purchase an alternative remote.
However, you may be in a position to save money by repairing a worn-out key fob rather than replacing it. This is especially true when the problem is due to a worn switch or faulty contact.
Battery
If the buttons on your key fob do not respond when you pressing them, this could be a sign that the battery has failed or is close to the end of life. Fortunately replacing the battery is an easy task that can be done on your own rather than hiring a locksmith to take care of it.
Locate the battery compartment first. This is usually found on the backside of the key fob and may be hidden behind an open cover that slides out or an access point which opens when you press the button. Once the compartment is exposed, locate the small button battery. It's usually shaped like an ordinary coin and is marked with an plus and minus symbol. Take the battery out and insert a new one in its place, ensuring that the plus and minus symbols are aligned correctly.
Once the battery is in place Close the compartment and snap the two parts of the key fob together. Before closing the door ensure that you align and snap the parts in the correct position. To test that the buttons function correctly you can press any one of them.
If your remote key fob ceases working after replacing the battery, it may be experiencing other issues that require a different kind of repair. Dropping the device into a puddle can cause it to cease functioning. Or, it could be experiencing an internal electrical failure or might need to be deprogrammed by a dealer or locksmith. Take a look at these other automotive troubleshooting methods to determine whether your key fob is experiencing a different issue.
Switches
Based on the year and make, there are different kinds of switches available on the car keyfob. The older style keys have an electronic chip that is visible in the case. The latest keys operate by sending signals to your car. The buttons on a key may be worn out or damaged due to regular use, irrespective of the model. They become hard to press or ineffective. If you press the button too hard, it could cause further damage. It could also stop the key from functioning in the future.
If you can't get your key to work, try changing the batteries. If this doesn't work, you may have to clean your key fob or adjust the switches. Since these tiny electronic switches spend a lot of time getting jostled around they are more prone to break down than the larger components of your key.
The switches are rubber-like, and are coated with an electricity conducting film that can wear down over time. They're fortunately tiny and inexpensive to replace. The older ones are soldered to the circuit board so you will need to carefully remove them without damaging anything else. Then you can put in the new ones and rebuild your key fob.
An effective way to protect your car key fob from being ruined is to avoid using it for more than a few hours at a time, and to keep it out of the way in areas that it will be visible. Also, try to find a secure place to keep your key in when you're not making use of it.
If the issue persists after you've cleaned your key fob or battery, and attempted to clean it, then you might need to contact a locksmith. A professional locksmith will test the frequency of your key to determine if your vehicle is still capable of communicating. They can also open and replace microswitches as well as change cases, and much more.
Outer Case
A key fob spends many hours bouncing around and when the buttons aren't able to move upwards and downwards within the case they can get stuck or break. If cleaning the case with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab does not work, it may be necessary to remove the case. If the contact points where the buttons touch don't fit well or are worn out, adjusting them may be the only way to fix the problem.
Rubber buttons be worn out over time. The rubber expands and nails pierce it and the buttons can become difficult to press. In this situation the key may fail, and it's time to replace the case or button. This repair involves removing the remote, then locating the button switches on the circuit board, and then heating the solder and carefully remove them. New buttons are then attached to the circuit board. The case is then put back together with the horseshoe key blade piece attached. The new buttons should be securely fitted into the case in order to prevent them from falling out.
Inner Case
Since your key fob is likely to be tossed around and sometimes be accidentally pressed and the buttons within can be damaged or stuck over time. With the help of metal tape and a hole-punch, you can often quickly solve this issue when your car is not at home and the key fob isn't working and you are unable to open the doors, but not start the engine. This simple fix will allow you to safely make it back to your vehicle and complete your journey.
