How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Extreme heat or cold can cause the car to stop functioning. Try waiting a little while before you decide to replace it.
It's a major pain when your car keys break and it happens at the most difficult times! Repairing a damaged key without the need to purchase another one.
Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs let us to open trunks, doors and tailgates, without having to search for a physical key. Some key fobs have a built-in key that can be used to start our vehicles. However, these key fobs depend on a small battery that provides power to their remote functions. If the battery dies then the key fob cannot transmit the signal needed to turn on the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to repair the problem and get your car running again.
First, check whether key repairs . If it seems to be dead, you will require replacing the batteries. You can do this yourself by removing the fob from its clip, or by using a flat-head screwdriver. It is important not to apply too much force or you may damage the fob. Also, make sure that you're using a correct type of battery. Some models may require a different battery. If you aren't sure what kind of battery your vehicle requires, you can usually find the details in your owner's manual or visit an Interstate All Battery Center to get a professional to assist you.
If the key fob actually isn't dead, you can sometimes revive it by bringing it closer to your vehicle. Most key fobs use RFID (radio frequency identification) that only operates in a limited range. The ignition system has to be able to recognize the signal. You can unlock your car or even start it by moving a few inches nearer.
Many car manufacturers have backup mechanisms that can be triggered when the key fob battery is dead. Ford for instance has a slot that is dedicated to the key fob. If it is properly inserted the key fob will activate the engine of the car. Check your owner's manual for information on where to find the slot and how to insert the key fob. If you are unable to start your car with this method, make sure to call roadside assistance for assistance.
Broken Key Ring
The chip inside the key fob is the one that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system to begin the engine. The chip could be damaged or there may be programming mistakes. If this occurs the key fob won't be able to send the correct identification code and your car won't begin. A malfunctioning transponder could be caused by physical damage to the key shell, or wear and wear and tear on the contact pads.
Usually the moment the key fob begins to struggle with the immobilizer system of your vehicle, you will see specific warning indicators on your dashboard. These may include warnings about errors flashing lights, or the key not locking the vehicle. If you notice any of these warnings, contact your local locksmith immediately for key fob repair or replacement.
When you carry many keys, it is easy to scratch your key ring. This can cause the fob to split in half. This is among the main reasons for a broken car key. It is possible to apply super glue on both sides of the crack and gently press them together to fix the issue. It is essential to apply a gel-type adhesive that dries slowly to prevent drips or runniness.
If this method isn't working, you should contact a professional locksmith right away to avoid further damage to your vehicle. A professional locksmith will be able to replace or repair your key fob swiftly and will also be able to make sure that the ignition lock and door lock are not affected in the process.
It can be a bit frustrating when your key fob becomes damaged. But, it's not an excuse to panic or get frustrated. You can take proactive steps to reduce the possibility of your key fob breaking in the near future. This includes regular maintenance, key protectors and having an extra. Quicksmith's staff is on hand to assist you if your key fob is damaged.
Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the small key ring at the top, which is where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've drilled a hole, and then wet-sanded it to strengthen it but I'm guessing the problem isn't resolved by this.
I've also wrapped the broken portion of the ring with clear tape, but it does not seem to do any good. It's really too bad as I use the tiny ring to hold my keys on the mini-split ring which holds the larger split ring for the other keyfobs.
If the case of the key fob is damaged, you can usually open it and replace the battery if it is not already dead. There are kits online to help, but they typically only provide an interim fix. It might be better to take it to a technician who will swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. You may also be able to find a replacement case at the home improvement store or a locksmith. They are not likely to be as costly as an entirely new key fob.
