Zostera marina, a widespread seagrass, evolved from a freshwater ancestor of terrestrial monocots and successfully transitioned into a completely submerged seagrass. We found that its oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) was partially inactivated in response to light exposure, as evidenced by both the increment of the relative variable fluorescence at the K-step and the downregulation of the OEC genes and proteins. This photosynthetic regulation was further addressed at both proteome and physiology levels by an in vivo study. The unchanged content of the ΔpH sensor PsbS protein and the non-photochemical quenching induction dynamics, described by a single exponential function, verified the absence of the fast qE component. Contents and activities of chlororespiration, Mehler reaction, malic acid synthesis, and photorespiration key enzymes were not upregulated, suggesting that alternative electron flows remained unactivated. Furthermore, neither significant production of singlet oxygen nor increment of total antioxidative capacity indicated that reactive oxygen species were not produced during light exposure. In summary, these low electron consumptions may allow Z. marina to efficiently use the limited electrons caused by partial OEC photoinactivation to maintain a normal carbon assimilation level.
Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disease often associated with chronic fatigue. Prevalence of fatigue can be measured via neuropsychological testing. Its pathophysiology is insufficiently understood. Structural analysis might help with the development of novel treatment methods.

We recruited 30 sarcoidosis patients whose fatigue severity and depressive symptom presence was measured through validated neuropsychological self-assessment. T1-weighted structural images were acquired and VBM preprocessing was conducted. Total scores of these tests and subscales were correlated through multiple regression analysis to the brain morphometry.

Fatigue severity positively correlated with gray matter volumes in the striatum, the cingulate cortex and the cerebellum and negatively in the parietal and temporal lobe and posterior insula. Subscale analysis indicated a correlation between cognitive fatigue and striatum involvement as well as between physical and psychosocial fatigue and cerebellar alterations.

Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is FDA-approved therapy for lower urinary tract and bowel dysfunction. It is newly introduced therapy in Saudi Arabia.

To evaluate the effect of SNM therapy in both male and female Saudi patient's sexual function.

A prospective cohort study was conducted for all patients who underwent SNM implantation from January 2016 till January 2020 at a single center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. link3 Sexual function was assessed before and after treatment using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) for men and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) for women.

Sexual function score changes from the baseline was reported. Correlation analysis was studied between IIEF-5 to assess erectile dysfunction and FSFI assessing desire, arousal, orgasm, pain and sexual satisfaction and other collected data including patient's age, functional diagnosis and post void residual (PVR).

The study included 13 total patients (8 female, 5 male) with mean age 47y (33-60). In developing countries most patients with refractory erectile dysfunction cannot afford a penile prosthesis (PP) due to its cost and non-coverage by insurance companies.

To assess the patient satisfaction outcomes with a novel, low-cost, semi-rigid PP.

52 patients who had received the Shah semi-rigid PP between January 2013 and December 2018 were included in this bidirectional study. Patient demographics including age, etiology, body mass index, length of PP received and post-operative complications were recorded. Patient satisfaction with the PP was evaluated using the modified Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction (EDITS) Questionnaire.

The primary outcome measures were overall satisfaction, total EDITS and mean EDITS score. The secondary outcome measures were residual penile tumescence, ease of concealment and post-operative complications.

Radial waves are used to treat erectile dysfunction; however, they are different than focal waves, and their mechanism of action or effect on improving this condition is not known.

To evaluate the effect of radial waves at the cellular level and their effectiveness at the clinical level for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Systematic literature review. Electronic database searches and manual searches were performed to identify (i) clinical trials or cohort studies evaluating the effectiveness of radial waves in men with erectile dysfunction and (ii) preclinical trials in animal models or cell cultures in which the production of nitric oxide or endothelial growth factor was evaluated. Study quality was assessed, and data were extracted from each study. A narrative synthesis of the results was performed given the high heterogeneity between the selected studies.

Certain hematologic parameters related to blood cells, known as the biomarkers that predict cardiovascular disease, might be potential predictors of erectile dysfunction (ED) due to the shared pathophysiology between ED and cardiovascular disease .

To investigate the relationship between ED and these hematologic parameters and the clinical significance of hematologic parameters for the diagnosis of ED.

A total of 113 male patients diagnosed with ED were included in this study. Blood samples were collected before 1000 AM for blood cells examination, biochemical tests, and sex hormone analysis. Another 212 healthy controls without ED from the health management center was included as the control group. The relationship between hematologic parameters and ED was assessed by comparing differences in body mass index (BMI), biochemical indexes and hematologic parameters between the 2 groups, and the diagnostic value of hematologic parameters for ED was also examined and compared.

Male obesity has a negative correlation with plasma testosterone (T) levels and sexual function (SF).

To evaluate the effect of weight loss through bariatric surgery (BS) on SF, low T symptoms, and hormonal profiles in obese men.

Thirty-three men who underwent BS participated in this cohort study. Before surgery, all participants underwent clinical examinations, including anthropometric, lipid, glycemic, and hormonal evaluations. SF was evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire; low T symptoms were evaluated using the Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) and Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male (ADAM) questionnaires. The participants were reevaluated 6 months post-surgery.
