In addition, if the presence of atmospheric HNO3 was ignored, the nitrogen oxidation rate (NOR) would be significantly underestimated, especially at relative humidity levels less than 60% and temperatures greater than 16 °C. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the source contribution and characteristics of secondary aerosols in the suburban area of western Japan and can be adopted as the important basis to mitigate particle pollution.Nornicotine, the primary nicotine metabolite that is formed through demethylation of nicotine in the genus Nicotiana tabacum L. Nornicotine is not only a precursor of tobacco-specific nitrosamine N-nitrosonornicotine but also have detrimental effects to human health. Till now, information on the biotransformation of nornicotine is limited. Herein, we identified and characterized a bacterium Arthrobacter sp. strain NOR5, utilized nornicotine as the sole of carbon and energy source, and degraded 500 mg/L nornicotine completely within 60 h under the optimum conditions of pH 7.0 and 30 °C. In this study, we not only identified previously reported intermediate metabolites such as 6-OH-nornicotine, 6-OH-mysomine, 6-OH-pseudooxy-nornicotine (6HPONor) but also identified a new intermediate metabolite 2,6-di-OH-pseudooxy-nornicotine (2,6DHPONor) by UV spectroscopy and liquid chromatography coupled with time of flight mass spectrometry. About half of 6HPONor could be transformed into 2,6DHPONor that was identified as a novel catabolic intermediate of nornicotine. By the addition of an electron acceptor 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol (DCIP), the cell-free extract exhibited inducible 6HPONor dehydrogenase activity at 179 ± 60 mU/mg that could convert 6HPONor to 2,6DHPONor. Our study demonstrated that Arthrobacter sp. strain NOR5 has a high potential to degrade the nornicotine completely.Testing SARS-CoV-2 viral loads in wastewater has recently emerged as a method of tracking the prevalence of the virus and an early-warning tool for predicting outbreaks in the future. This study reports SARS-CoV-2 viral load in wastewater influents and treated effluents of 11 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), as well as untreated wastewater from 38 various locations, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in May and June 2020. Composite samples collected over twenty-four hours were thermally deactivated for safety, followed by viral concentration using ultrafiltration, RNA extraction using commercially available kits, and viral quantification using RT-qPCR. Furthermore, estimates of the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in different regions were simulated using Monte Carlo. see more Results showed that the viral load in wastewater influents from these WWTPs ranged from 7.50E+02 to over 3.40E+04 viral gene copies/L with some plants having no detectable viral RNA by RT-qPCR. The virus was also detected in 85% of untreated wastewater samples taken from different locations across the country, with viral loads in positive samples ranging between 2.86E+02 and over 2.90E+04 gene copies/L. It was also observed that the precautionary measures implemented by the UAE government correlated with a drop in the measured viral load in wastewater samples, which were in line with the reduction of COVID-19 cases reported in the population. Importantly, none of the 11 WWTPs' effluents tested positive during the entire sampling period, indicating that the treatment technologies used in the UAE are efficient in degrading SARS-CoV-2, and confirming the safety of treated re-used water in the country. SARS-CoV-2 wastewater testing has the potential to aid in monitoring or predicting an outbreak location and can shed light on the extent viral spread at the community level.Releases of oil and gas (OG) wastewaters can have complex effects on stream-water quality and downstream organisms, due to sediment-water interactions and groundwater/surface water exchange. Previously, elevated concentrations of sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), barium (Ba), strontium (Sr), and lithium (Li), and trace hydrocarbons were determined to be key markers of OG wastewater releases when combined with Sr and radium (Ra) isotopic compositions. Here, we assessed the persistence of an OG wastewater spill in a creek in North Dakota using a combination of geochemical measurements and modeling, hydrologic analysis, and geophysical investigations. OG wastewater comprised 0.1 to 0.3% of the stream-water compositions at downstream sites in February and June 2015 but could not be quantified in 2016 and 2017. However, OG-wastewater markers persisted in sediments and pore water for 2.5 years after the spill and up to 7.2-km downstream from the spill site. Concentrations of OG wastewater constituents were highly variablhuman exposures well outside source-remediation zones.Reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency technologies and solutions, decreasing emissions are very effective tools towards EU environmental policy. The constant demand for domestic hot water (DHW) throughout the year creates great benefits for drain water heat recovery (DWHR) systems in hotels, which is the most promising and significant feature of energy saving potential for the hotel sector in Poland. This paper determines the feasibility of heat recovery in a typical hotel in Poland. The energy analysis was carried out for the installed DWHR system (from washbasins and showers) at the hotel building. To evaluate the energy saving potentiality, daily, monthly and yearly calculation results were performed for an exemplary hotel in Poland. Two types of heat exchangers were adopted for further calculations vertical (System 1) and horizontal (System 2), this intention aimed to find the most efficient type and relevant solution of energy saving and reduction of CO2 emissions in the analysed hotel. The analysis and calculations were repeated to enhance the saving potentiality of the proposed DWHR systems for various parameters like constant and variable temperature of supply cold water, daily hot water consumption profiles, the efficiency of heat recovery, reduction of annual carbon dioxide emission (CDE), facility standard of operating procedure, the impact of hotel size, etc. The obtained results of the conducted calculations ensure a significant potential of energy savings by implementing the proposed DWHR systems in analysed hotel, which allow to save energy demand and to reduce CO2 emission by 27.3% and improve the efficiency of the DHW preparation system.
