Physiologic aging has been associated with gut dysbiosis. Although short exercise interventions have been linked to beneficial changes in gut microbiota in younger adults, limited data are available from older populations. We hypothesized that exercise would produce beneficial shifts in microbiota and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels in older persons.
Stool samples were collected before and at completion of a supervised 24-week cardiovascular and resistance exercise intervention among 50-75-year-old participants. SCFA levels were analyzed by gas chromatography and microbiome by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Negative binomial regression models compared pre- and post-differences using false discovery rates for multiple comparison.
A total of 22 participants provided pre-intervention samples; 15 provided samples at study completion. At baseline, the majority of participants were men (95%), mean age 58.0 (8.8) years, mean body mass index 27.4 (6.4) kg/m

The antioxidant peptide liquid XMNDT was extracted from fresh mare's milk solution and purified. The peptide had a molecular weight of 1594.89 kDa and was mainly composed of VAPFPQPVVPYPQR. Antioxidant peptide XMNDT could inhibit the proliferation of A549 lung cancer cells in the G1 phase, accelerate cell apoptosis, increase the activity of SOD and the amount of GSH, and reduce the secretion of MDA. It also exhibited certain antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging. These data can provide a basis for research on new antioxidant properties by reducing the inflammation caused by aging.The nopal cactus is an essential part of the Mexican diet and culture. The per capita consumption of young cladodes averages annually to 6.4 kg across the nation. In addition to contributing to the country's food culture, the nopal is considered a food with functional characteristics since, in addition to providing fiber, an important group of polyphenolic compounds is present, which has given cladodes to be considered a healthy food, for what they have been incorporated into the diet of Mexican people and many other countries worldwide. Research suggests that polyphenols from cladodes act as antioxidants and antidiabetics. This review studies the main phenolic components in cladodes and summarizes both conventional and novel methods to identify them.Poor water solubility, emulsifying, and foaming properties of gluten protein have limited its applications. Gluten is structured by covalent (disulfide bonds) and noncovalent bonds (hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, hydrophobic bonds) which prone to alteration by various treatments. Enzyme modification has the ability to alter certain properties of gluten and compensate the deficiencies in gluten network. By hydrolyzing mechanisms and softening effects, hydrolytic enzymes affect gluten directly and indirectly and improve dough quality. The present review investigates the effects of some hydrolytic enzymes (protease and peptidase, alcalase, xylanase, pentosanase, and cellulase) on the rheological, functional, conformational, and nutritional features of gluten and dough. Overall, protease, peptidase, and alcalase directly affect peptide bonds in gluten. In contrast, arabinoxylan, pentosan, and cellulose are affected, respectively, by xylanase, pentosanase, and cellulase which indirectly affect gluten proteins. The changes in gluten structure by enzyme treatment allow gluten for being used in variety of purposes in the food and nonfood industry.Nelumbinis semen is commonly known as lotus seeds that have been used as a vegetable, functional food, and medicine for 7,000 years. So, functional foods are getting popularity due to a wide range of essential constituents, which are associated to decrease the risk of chronic diseases. These bioactive compounds from seeds are involved in anti-adipogenic, antioxidant, antitumor, cardiovascular, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-fertility, anti-microbial, anti-viral, hypoglycemic, etc. Moreover, the relationship between functional compounds along with their mechanism of action in the body, their extraction from the seeds for further research would be of great interest.This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess effect of consuming anthocyanins (ACNs; pure ACNs or products containing ACNs) on liver enzymes levels including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Although no significant impact was detected on the liver enzymes, a significant reduction was observed on ALT (WMD = -4.932 U/L, 95% CI = -9.848 to -0.015, p = .049) and AST (WMD = -3.464 U/L, 95% CI = -6.034 to -0.894, p = .008) in the studies that examined them as primary outcomes. A significant decrease was found on AST among the healthy subjects (WMD = -4.325 U/L, 95% CI = -8.516 to -0.134, p = .043) and in the studies that used products containing ACNs as intervention (WMD = -2.201 U/L, 95% CI = -4.275 to -0.127, p = .037). Although no significant relation was detected between ACNs dosage and the liver enzymes, significant associations were found between the duration of trial with ALT (ALT slope 0.09, 95% CI = 0.040 to 0.139, p = .0003) and AST (slope 0.076, 95% CI = 0.037 to 0.115, p = .0001). In conclusion, although ACNs had no significant effect on the liver enzymes, a significant decrease was discovered on ALT and AST in the studies that evaluated them as primary outcomes. A significant reduction was observed in AST in the healthy individuals and in the studies used products containing ACNs as intervention. Significant relations were also found between the duration of trial with ALT and AST. Further studies are required to confirm these results.The goal of this study was to investigate the viability of microencapsulated and coated Lactobacillus acidophilus in yogurt during storage in a refrigerator for 28 days and in simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Furthermore, the effect of the microencapsulated and coated L. acidophilus on the physicochemical, textural, and sensory properties of yogurt was assessed. Lactobacillus acidophilus was microencapsulated in sodium alginate and coated with xanthan and/or whey protein. The coating led to the increase in the microcapsule diameter and the microencapsulation yield, while it led to the decreased moisture and water activity (aw) of the microcapsule. The survival of L. acidophilus microcapsule coated with whey protein and xanthan in yogurt during storage and exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions was significantly increased. Compared with free bacteria, the L. acidophilus microcapsule coated with whey protein and xanthan had the increased viability in yogurt until 2.16 log CFU/g during storage and 3.52 log CFU/g in simulated gastrointestinal conditions. mTOR inhibitor drugs After the 28th day of storage, a significant difference between the acidity and pH of yogurt containing coated and microencapsulated L. acidophilus and control yogurt was not observed. However, yogurt containing free L. acidophilus had lower pH and higher acidity and showed a significant difference (p less then .05) with other samples. Although the coating of L. acidophilus microcapsule did not affect the sensory properties and gumminess of yogurt, it increased the firmness, adhesiveness, and viscosity of this product and caused a significant decrease in syneresis and cohesiveness. In general, the application of whey protein and xanthan coating on L. acidophilus microcapsule surface could increase the viability of this probiotic in yogurt during storage and in simulated gastrointestinal conditions and improve the texture attributes of yogurt.Dietary patterns are considered as a modifiable risk factor for metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the association between the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean (MED) dietary patterns and MetS. This cross-sectional study was conducted on the data from recruitment phase of prospective studies on Iranian adults known as Yazd Health Study (YaHS) and Yazd Nutrition Study (TAMYZ). MetS was diagnosed among 2,221 adults based on the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The participants' dietary intake was assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire. According to the predefined methods, DASH and MED scores were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship of DASH and MED dietary patterns with MetS. The prevalence of MetS was 28.8% in the present study. Women who were in the highest quintile of DASH in comparison with those who were in the first quintile tended to decrease the odds of MetS after adjusting for the potential confounders (OR 0.50, CI 0.27-0.95). There was a significant decreasing trend in the odds of MetS across increasing quintiles of the DASH in women (p-trend = .006). Also, the highest adherence to DASH reduced the odds of abdominal obesity (OR 0.34, CI 0.15-0.77) in women. Although adherence to MED dietary pattern had no significant relationship with MetS, moderate adherence to this dietary pattern could decrease the odds of fasting blood glucose levels (OR 0.57, CI 0.33-0.97) and abdominal obesity (OR 0.42, CI 0.20-0.87) in women. We found evidence indicating a significant protective association between DASH and METs and its component in women. Hence, more prospective studies are needed to confirm our findings in other populations.10-Gingerol (10-Gin), an active ingredient extracted from ginger, has been reported to have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. However, 10-Gin has not been proved to offer protection against cardiomyocyte injury induced by hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R). This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of 10-Gin against H/R-induced injury and its potential mechanisms in cardiomyocytes. A H/R injury model of H9c2 cardiomyocytes was established using 600 μmol/L CoCl2 to induce hypoxia in the cells for 24 hr and then reoxygenated for 3 hr. 10-Gin was pretreated with H9c2 cardiomyocytes for 24 hr to assess its cardiomyocyte protection. Our results showed that 10-Gin improved the viability of H9c2 cardiomyocytes in the H/R model and decreased the activities of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and the generation of reactive oxygen species. By intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) fluorescence, we found that 10-Gin could significantly reduce the [Ca2+]i concentration. 10-Gin administration increased the activities of antioxidase and reduced malondialdehyde content and inflammatory cytokine levels.
