Ionizing radiation impacts many organ systems, each of which comprises a level of immunity to infectious disease. Bone marrow toxicity after radiation results in a predisposition to leukopenia and subsequent susceptibility to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Radiation-induced damage to mucosal, integumentary, and solid organ structures disrupts additional lines of innate defense. Over the past three decades, much progress has been made in effective antimicrobial prophylaxis, resulting in decreased infectious complications and improved survival. Vaccination schedules following myeloablative radiation have become highly regimented and treatment of overt infectious complications is largely standardized. In this article, we discuss consequences, prevention, and management of infections following exposure to ionizing radiation.Wake-up effect and fatigue in HfO2-based ferroelectric films are closely related to the phase transition dynamics of the film subjected to ultrafast electric pulses. Here, we establish a multiphase coexistence phase field dynamics model for HfO2-based ferroelectric films in the ultrafast time scale and study the effects of the amplitude, width and frequency of the electric pulse on the phase transition dynamics. Based on the simulation results, we obtain the analytical equation of the volume fraction of switchedc-domains under low fields as a function of pulse duration. And we found that monoclinic phase can transform into ferroelectricc-domains under high amplitude electric field (E⩾ 2.8 MV cm-1). The electric pulse duration affects the film's retention properties. When the duration of the electric pulse is less than 1.2 ns or longer than 1.8 ns, the ferroelectricc-domains will respectively invert into other phases or increase cumulatively after removing the electric field. The frequency of cyclic pulse is related to the degree of wake up effect. The lower the pulse frequency is, the more obvious the 'wake up' effect is.Background and purpose.Accurate volume delineation plays an essential role in radiotherapy. Very similar features to those that led to this insight have also been observed in experimental data from collisions of small systems, involving protons or other light nuclei. We describe recent developments aimed at understanding whether, and if so how, systems that produce relatively few particles (orders of magnitude less than in typical heavy ion collisions) and are only one to a few times the size of a proton, can behave like fluids. This involves a deeper understanding of fluid dynamics and its applicability, improvements of our understanding of the initial geometry of the collisions by considering fluctuations of the proton shape, as well as advancements in the calculation of initial state effects within an effective theory of quantum chromodynamics, which can affect the observables that are used to study fluid behavior. We further address open questions and discuss future directions.We discuss a class of models for particulate gels in which the particle contacts are described by an effective interaction combining a two-body attraction and a three-body angular repulsion. Using molecular dynamics, we show how varying the model parameters allows us to sample, for a given gelation protocol, a variety of gel morphologies. For a specific set of the model parameters, we identify the local elastic structures that get interlocked in the gel network. Using the analytical expression of their elastic energy from the microscopic interactions, we can estimate their contribution to the emergent elasticity of the gel and gain new insight into its origin.
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the most common liver disease globally, and affects about a quarter of the general population. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a severe (sometimes fatal) liver disease that affects children and adults, with a rising prevalence. Thus, not surprisingly, both conditions can frequently coexist, with potential synergistic impact on the course of the disease and response to therapy of both entities.
In this work, the authors aimed to provide a narrative updated review on this interaction, diagnosis, and management of MAFLD/AIH and the current challenges.

The effects of cannabis use in vulnerable persons with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, continues to be elucidated.
We compared 55 cannabis-only users (Group 1) with 462 non-substance users (Group 2) on measures of length of stay and number of psychiatric hospitalizations with a primary discharge diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney non-parametric test for non-normal distributions, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Poisson regression analysis.
Group 1 had a mean length of stay of 6.15
days (
= 5.32
days) and Group 2 had a mean length of stay of 8.66
days (
= 11.14
days) (i.e. Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney,
= .0347; log-transformed ANOVA,
= .0203). This difference was no longer statistically significant when controlling for three covariates (
= .1543). Poisson regressions for the mean number of admissions (1.84) were not statistically significant.

Cannabis use may not be a good predictor of length of stay, once covariates are considered, and mean number of hospitalizations in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.Sri Lanka reported the last case of indigenous malaria in October 2012, and received malaria-free certification from WHO in September 2016. Malaria cases have since, shifted from indigenous to imported, and the country remains receptive and vulnerable to malaria. A case-based epidemiological study was conducted on all imported malaria cases reported in the country in 2015 and 2016 with the aim of profiling imported malaria to improve the effectiveness of the surveillance and case management system for malaria. Data were obtained from case reports of the Anti Malaria Campaign, hospital records and laboratory registers. Over the 2 years, 77 imported malaria infections were diagnosed in 54 Sri Lankans and 23 foreign nationals. A majority of the infections were reported among males (93%) in the age group of 21-50 years (85.8%), and all were recent travelers overseas. Most patients were detected by passive case detection, but 10% of cases were detected by Active Case Detection. Only 25% of patients were diagnosed within 3 days of the onset of symptoms. In 32% of patients, the diagnosis was delayed by more than 10 days after the onset of symptoms. Plasmodium falciparum infections manifested significantly earlier after arrival in Sri Lanka than did P.vivax infections. The majority of patients (74%) were diagnosed in the Western Province, which was not endemic for malaria. A third of patients were diagnosed in the private sector. The shift in the epidemiology of malaria infection from before to after elimination has implications for preventing the reestablishment of malaria.Risk factors and outcomes of GF after TCD haploidentical transplantation in children with hematological malignancies were analyzed. 148 TCD transplants were included. 78 patients were diagnosed of ALL and 70 patients of AML. 22 out of 148 patients developed GF. MVA showed that patient less then 9 years (HR 5.0; 95% CI 1.1-23.0; p = 0.03) and pre-transplant CD8+ ≥150/µL (HR 12.0; 95% CI 1.6-95.3; p = 0.01) were associated with GF. A score was assigned to each patient. The cumulative incidence of GF for patients with CD8+ ≥150/µL (2 points) was 6 ± 4% and 3 ± 2% for patients less then 9 years (1 point) while for patients with 3 points was 24 ± 6%, With a median follow-up of 48 months (range; 4-180 months), 14 (64%) of 22 patients with GF are alive and disease-free. DFS for GF patients was 53 ± 12%. In conclusion, patient age and pre-transplant CD3+/CD8+ are associated with GF in children undergoing TCD haploidentical transplantation.In this paper, a complete theoretical investigation of hydroxylic indole-3-pyruvic acid (HIPyA) molecule was performed using the DFT quantum chemical, molecular docking and molecular dynamics calculations. The conformational analysis of HIPyA molecule was carried out using density functional theory quantum chemical calculations. The most stable structure of the studied molecule was predicted by means of DFT/B3LYP method with cc-pVTZ basis set. The simulated vibrational frequencies were assigned and proved to be in agreement with the available experimental FT-IR data. The effects of gas phase and solvents on UV-visible spectra of HIPyA molecule were simulated using TD-DFT/B3LYP method with cc-pVTZ basis set. The analysis of the density of states spectrum validates the frontier molecular orbitals results, which reveals the charge transfer interaction in HIPyA molecule. The molecular electrostatic potential surface confirms the electrophilic and nucleophilic reactive sites of the studied molecule. The natural bond orbital analysis evidences the bioactivity of the studied molecule. The obtained first order hyperpolarizability value is 33.596 times greater than urea, which confirms the nonlinear optical activity of HIPyA molecule. The molecular docking analysis reveals that the studied molecule under interest can act as a potent inhibitor against the amyloid β-protein (Aβ) enzyme, which causes the Alzheimer's disease. The molecular dynamics analysis confirms the reliability of the docking results.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.
