At the beginning of the 17th century, well before the time of Jean-Martin Charcot, numerous medical theses related to hysteria were defended, particularly in Paris. Among these theses, the work of Auguste Lepecq de la Clôture stands out for a controversy that questions the "matrix" origin of hysteria. Although Charcot, Babinski and Freud showed considerable interest in this pathology, its source remained mysterious to the point of disappearing from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In this turmoil, women, reduced to the world of silence, have been tossed around throughout history, abused by politicians. While some have tried to make themselves heard, no one seems to have heard them.What has become of the hysterics of yesteryear? Despite the evolution of nosographic categories, their symptoms cannot be reduced to this, and they invite all clinicians to listen to the power of their words to express the effects of the unconscious. Disappointed lovers, worshippers of knowledge, they challenge those who would try to squeeze them into overly restrictive diagnostic boxes, to silence their truth. For they embody in their tribulations the effects of language on the being, a metonymy that they wear on their bodies. Their posture invites us to listen to the singularity of each case by highlighting the dignity of the symptom.Anorexia nervosa and hysteria are two entities whose concepts have evolved through the ages, from "hysterical anorexia" to become distinct both in their presentations and in the representations within the community. Today, the psychiatric approach has been enriched by the contribution of neuroscience. Hospital treatment of anorexia nervosa allows intervention on the symptoms of the disease, but also takes into account the associated needs and disorders.Today's hysteria, contemporary with its clinical disappearance from current nomenclatures relayed by neuroscience, is scattered in the 'catch-all' categories of conversion disorders, histrionic personality, etc. These approaches convey what Jacques Lacan called the foreclosure of the subject, or what amounts to saying, its rejection or oblivion, in particular in the relationship to knowledge and to the jouissance of the symptom. The Freudian discovery of the unconscious, and its studies on hysteria, which made hysterical conversion a message to be deciphered, is reduced in the contemporary clinic to the dimension of a disorder to be and no longer to be interpreted, because interpretation implies the subject, its word. Fortunately for the clinic, hysteria has other strings to its bow in which the subject ultimately finds his word.Hysteria is one of the oldest and best known clinical terms. Its history reveals the extent to which pathological entities, some more than others, are the fruit of successive conceptions of experts, themselves undoubtedly influenced by the prevailing currents of thought of their time. IDE397 However, it is less clear how multiple phenotypic traits in sclerophyllous plants are integrated to accomplish proper functions under specific stressors. This study measured 10 leaf traits in a sclerophyllous species, Eurya japonica Thunb., in the Zhoushan Archipelago, eastern China, to examine how the structures of trait correlation (i.e. phenotypic integration) vary between two habitats with contrasting moisture and phosphorus (P) availability. Overall, the trait correlation matrices were similar between the two habitats under study (Mantel r > 0.5), reflecting a consistent trade-off between leaf outspreading (i.e. leaf area/mass ratio) and water-use efficiency (measured by δ13C). Stomatal conductance was correlated with leaf area, thickness and area/mass ratio only in the dry, P-rich habitat, whereas it was robustly correlated with leaf P per unit area in the wet, P-poor habitat. Moreover, leaf water-use efficiency was robustly correlated with leaf P and N per unit area in the dry habitat, but not so in the low-P one. These differences in trait correlation structures illustrate that the pathways of strategic compromise under contrasting stressors were locally specialised. This study highlights the importance of phenotypic integration as an emergent 'trait' in sustaining viable strategies.Pearl millet is an important C4 cereal plant that possesses enormous capacity to survive under extreme climatic conditions. It serves as a major food source for people in arid and semiarid regions of south-east Asia and Africa. GRAS is an important transcription factor gene family of plant that play a critical role in regulating developmental processes, stress responses and phytohormonal signalling. In the present study, we have identified a total number of 57 GRAS members in pearl millet. Phylogenetic analysis clustered all the PgGRAS genes into eight groups (GroupI-GroupVIII). Motif analysis has shown that all the PgGRAS proteins had conserved GRAS domains and gene structure analysis revealed a high structural diversity among PgGRAS genes. Expression patterns of PgGRAS genes in different tissues (leaf, stem and root) and under various abiotic stress (drought, heat and salinity) were determined. Further, expression analysis was also carried out in response to various hormones (SA, MeJA, GA and ABA). The results provide a clear understanding of GRAS transcription factor family in pearl millet, and lay a good foundation for the functional characterisation of GRAS genes in pearl millet.Background Eleven percent of people living with HIV in Australia remain unaware of their diagnosis, and there are missed opportunities for HIV testing in priority settings in New South Wales. We conducted an anonymous online survey to health workers in Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) in September 2019. Tick-box, Likert scale responses were analysed using Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis statistical tests, and free text responses were analysed with thematic analysis.
Three percent (n = 420) of WSLHD's estimated 14 000 health workers responded. These included 317 clinicians (171 nurses, 65 doctors, 56 allied health professionals (AHPs), 25 midwives, and 103 health workers in non-clinical roles). This article reviews the development of gene editing technology and briefly introduces the research and application of gene editing technology in primary immunodeficiency disease.A girl, aged 7 years, was admitted due to pain in both lower limbs for more than one year. Lumbar MRI showed soft tissue masses in the paravertebral region. Cerebral MRI showed nodular masses in the cavernous sinus at both sides. Chest CT showed high-density nodules in the outer basal segment of the right inferior lobe and the anterior segment of the left upper lobe of the lung. Biopsy of lumbar lesions showed Epstein-Barr (EB) virus-related smooth muscle tumor. Genetic testing showed a de novo mutation, c.725_730delAGAGTA (p.K242_S243del), in the ITK gene. The masses in the lumbar vertebra were removed by surgery, and then the pain in both lower limbs disappeared. This article reports a case of EB virus-related smooth muscle tumor with a deletion mutation in the ITK gene, which provides experience for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.
To summarize the experience in the application of muscle relaxants in the perioperative period in neonates with congenital esophageal atresia-tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF).
A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 58 previously untreated neonates with EA-TEF who were treated in the Neonatal Center of Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University from 2017 to 2019. The incidence rate of anastomotic leak was compared between the neonates receiving muscle relaxants for different durations after surgery (≤ 5 days and > 5 days). The correlation between the duration of postoperative use of muscle relaxants and the duration of mechanical ventilation was evaluated.
Among the 58 neonates with EA-TEF, 44 underwent surgery, among whom 35 with type III EA-TEF underwent thoracoscopic surgery. Among these 35 neonates, 30 (86%) received muscle relaxants after surgery, with a median duration of 4.75 days, and 6 (18%) experienced anastomotic leak. There was no significant difference in the incidence rate of anastomosis leak between the ≤ 5 days and > 5 days groups (
> 0.05). The duration of postoperative invasive mechanical ventilation was positively correlated with the duration of the use of muscle relaxants (
=0.548,
< 0.05).
Prolonged use of muscle relaxants after surgery cannot significantly reduce the incidence of anastomotic leak, but can prolong the duration of invasive mechanical ventilation in neonates with EA-TEF. Therefore, prolonged use of muscle relaxants is not recommended after surgery.
