It has been proved to be a high quality protein due to containing all of the essential amino acids and the content closing to the FAO/WHO recommended ideal pattern. Recent studies indicated that RBP and rice bran protein hydrolysates (RBPH) served variety biological functions. In this review, we summarized the classical functions of RBP and RBPH mediating antioxidant activity, chronic diseases prevention (such as antihypertensive effect, anti-diabetic effect, cholesterol-lowering activity), and anti-cancer effect. We also proposed their potential novel functions on anti-obesity effect, attenuating sarcopenia, promoting wound healing. Furthermore, the potential benefit to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients was put forward, which might provide new strategy for development and utilization of RBP and RBPH.Overweight and obesity are worldwide epidemic health threats. They recently emerged as disruptors of brain homeostasis leading to a wide variety of neurologic disorders. PF-01367338 phosphate This study aims at developing a fast and easy overfeeding model using zebrafish for investigating the impact of overweight on brain homeostasis. We established a 4-week overfeeding protocol using commercially available dry food in an ad libitum-like feeding. In the diet-induced obesity/overweight (DIO) fish model, weight, size, and body mass index were increased compared with controls. Also, DIO fish displayed hyperglycemia, and had higher levels of advanced glycation end products and oxidative stress (4-hydroxynonenal [4-HNE]) in a peripheral organ (tail). Although overfed fish did not display major blood-brain barrier leakage, they showed an increased cerebral oxidative stress, blunted brain cell proliferation as well as a striking decreased locomotor activity. Interestingly, switching from an overfeeding to a normal diet partially improved peripheral and central disruptions induced by overfeeding in solely 2 weeks. As a conclusion, this study provides a rapid and easy overfeeding model in zebrafish with relevant peripheral and central disruptions. This model could open the way for further investigations to better understand by which mechanisms overfeeding could disturb brain homeostasis. It also reinforces and contrasts with another zebrafish overweight model, showing that the type of the food provided could impair differently brain homeostasis.Motor attempt (MA)/motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) is a newly developing rehabilitation technology for motor impairment. This study aims to explore the relationship between electroencephalography sensorimotor rhythm and motor impairment to provide reference for a BCI design. Twenty-eight stroke survivors with varying levels of motor dysfunction and spasticity status in the subacute or chronic stage were enrolled in the study to perform MA and MI tasks. Event-related desynchronization (ERD)/event-related synchronization (ERS) during and immediately after motor tasks were calculated. The Fugl-Meyer assessment scale (FMA) and the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) were applied to characterize upper-limb motor dysfunction and spasticity. There was a positive correlation between FMA total scores and ERS in the contralesional hemisphere in the MI task (P less then .05) and negative correlations between FMA total scores and ERD in both hemispheres in the MA task (P less then .05). Negative correlations were found between MAS scores of wrist flexors and ERD in the ipsilesional hemisphere (P less then .05) in the MA task. It suggests that motor dysfunction may be more correlated to ERS in the MI task and to ERD in the MA task while spasticity may be more correlated to ERD in the MA task. Background New risk areas for tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are emerging and the spread of disease and vaccine coverage is unclear in Sweden. We wanted to study the prevalence and levels of TBE-virus (TBEV) antibodies in southern Sweden, and to investigate whether there were individuals with undiagnosed TBE. Materials and Methods Two cohorts of sera were collected One group of anonymous individuals in rural areas (AIRA) in Skåne and one group of volunteers who often got tick-bites (tick-bitten individuals [TBI]). An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for TBEV IgM and IgG was performed, as well as a TBEV neutralization test (NT) in selected individuals. Results In the AIRA group, there was an IgG seropositivity of 5.3%. There were individuals with high antibody levels both in areas previously considered as risk areas (Bromölla and Knislinge), as well as in another area (Tyringe). In the TBI group, 45% of the individuals were vaccinated according to the questionnaires and IgG seropositivity was 28%. A lower seroprevalence and levels of antibodies were seen in the middle-aged group (50-69 years) compared with younger or elderly study participants. A positive NT revealed several individuals with suspected undiagnosed episodes of TBE. Conclusion Subclinical or misdiagnosed cases have probably occurred in Skåne. Middle-aged individuals had lower levels of IgG, which could indicate either less tick exposure or a lower vaccine response. Less than half of the TBI were vaccinated, an indication that more information about the disease and vaccine might be needed. We conclude that the study motivates an increased awareness of TBEV in the region. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the association between 2-dimensional (2D) perfusion angiography and wound healing rate in patients with combined femoro-popliteal and below-the-knee lesions in critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and foot wounds undergoing isolated femoro-popliteal endovascular revascularization. Between January and June 2019, 24 patients with multilevel CLTI and foot wounds underwent isolated femoro-popliteal endovascular revascularization. In all of them, an assessment of foot perfusion by 2D perfusion angiography was performed. To evaluate the foot perfusion, a region of interest was identified, and time-density curves were calculated. Changes of the overall time-density curves were evaluated together with transcutaneous oximetry (TcPO2) using bivariate correlation (Pearson correlation coefficient) and associated with 6-month wound healing. The mean increase of time-density curves was 212.2% (range from +9.8% to +1984.9%) and the mean increase of TcPO2 was 116.4% (range from -4.7% to 485.7%). No significant association between time-density curves and TcPO2 values (Pearson correlation coefficient -0.24) was observed (P = .3). At 6 months, wound healing occurred in 15 of 24 (62.5%) patients. In conclusion, this preliminary experience confirmed that 2D perfusion angiography associates with wound healing rate in CLTI patients with ischemic foot wounds and combined femoro-popliteal and below-the-knee lesions who are undergoing isolated femoro-popliteal endovascular revascularization. No association between time-density curves and TcPO2 values was observed. The AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (ACSR) was built and maintained to support research into cancers in individuals infected with the HIV by providing specimens at no charge. Numerous methods to reach investigators about this resource have been used, but the possibility of underusage of the resource has been a concern. Using a commercial marketing firm to raise awareness was not a possibility for the ACSR. However, a unique academic interdisciplinary collaboration was developed with a marketing communications course using primary and secondary marketing research and experiential learning applied to the ACSR. The cross disciplinary approach promoted greater understanding of the intersection between medical research, biobanking, and business. The collaboration resulted in new strategies to improve the visibility of the ACSR by focusing on its social media presence, creating a database of potential new users, enhancing the ACSR website, and making domain name changes. Lessons learned from this exercise should have general applicability across the field of biorepositories.Introduction Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and prompted by recent federal and state policy shifts impacting behavioral health care delivery, the use of telebehavioral health has rapidly increased. This qualitative study describes behavioral health provider perspectives on the use of telebehavioral health before and during the pandemic and how policy changes impacted access to and utilization of behavioral health services in Michigan. Materials and Methods A convenience sample of 31 licensed and nonlicensed behavioral health providers operating in Michigan participated in semi-structured interviews between July and August 2020. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by using inductive methods. Results The thematic analysis resulted in four overarching themes (1) increased access to care; (2) maintenance of quality of care; (3) minimal privacy concerns; and (4) client and provider satisfaction. Discussion During and post-pandemic, providers need flexibility to determine whether in-person or telebehavioral health services, including audio-only, best meet client needs. Providers identified several populations for which telebehavioral health was less accessible clients with serious mental illness and substance use disorder, those with no broadband Internet access, children, and older adults. Additional training in telebehavioral health service provision can positively impact quality of care. Conclusion Policies that support reimbursement parity and expand provider use of telebehavioral health services should be maintained after the COVID-19 pandemic ends to avoid imposing barriers to accessing behavioral health care barriers post-pandemic.
Percutaneous spine biopsies for spondylodiscitis have been long discussed due to the low microbiologic yield. This retrospective study evaluated factors of cone beam computed tomography-guided spine biopsies that may affect microbiologic yield.
We retrospectively reviewed percutaneous spine biopsies under cone beam computed tomography for spondylodiscitis performed from January 2015-December 2020. Clinical and technical features such as the time from initial symptoms to biopsy, level biopsied, biopsy needle type/gauge, technical approach, radiation dose, technical success and microbiologic yield were recorded. Pre-procedure magnetic resonance imaging findings were also recorded such as the number of vertebral bodies involved, and disc morphology. Univariate logistic regression analysis and Receiver operating characteristic analysis were performed to assess any relationship between relevant factors and positive cultures.
A total of 50 patients underwent cone beam computed tomography-guided biopsies for spondylodiscitis, with resulted positive cultures in 18 patients (36%).
