We evaluated the incidence of cardiac events after chemoradiotherapy in patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) based on baseline cardiovascular risk and the heart substructures' radiation dose.

From 2008 to 2018, the cardiac events of 258 patients with stage III NSCLC who received definitive chemoradiotherapy were reviewed. In patients with high cardiovascular risk (ASCVD score>7.5%), LV V60>0% remained a negative ACS prognostic factor (P=0.003). Meanwhile, in patients with low cardiovascular risk, the LV radiation dose was not associated with ACS events (P=0.242).

A high LV radiation dose could increase ACS events in patients with stage III NSCLC and high cardiovascular risk. Pre-treatment cardiac risk evaluation and individualized surveillance may help prevent cardiac events after chemoradiotherapy.

To meet these diverse needs, the adrenal employs multiple cell populations with stem cell function. Here, we discuss the literature on adrenocortical stem cells using hematopoietic stem cells as a benchmark to examine the functional capacity of particular cell populations, including those located in the capsule and peripheral cortex. These populations are coordinately regulated by paracrine and endocrine signaling mechanisms, and display remarkable plasticity to adapt to different physiological and pathological conditions. Some populations also exhibit sex-specific activity, which contributes to highly divergent proliferation rates between sexes. Microvascular complement deposition strongly colocalized in situ with the SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins including spike glycoproteins in the endothelial cells as well as the viral receptor ACE2 in lesional and nonlesional skin; viral RNA was not evident. Microvascular SARS-CoV-2 viral protein, complement, and ACE2 expression was most conspicuous in the subcutaneous fat. Although the samples from severely ill patients with COVID-19 were from grossly normal skin, light microscopically focal microvascular abnormalities were evident that included endothelial cell denudement, basement membrane zone reduplication, and small thrombi. It is concluded that complement activation is common in grossly normal skin, especially in the subcutaneous fat which may provide a link between severe disease and obesity, in people with severe COVID-19, and the strong colocalization with the ACE2 receptor and viral capsid proteins without viral RNA suggests that circulating viral proteins (ie, pseudovirions) may dock onto the endothelial of these microvessels and induce complement activation.We evaluated data from 10 laboratories that analyzed water samples from 82 recreational water sites across the state of Michigan between 2016 and 2018. Water sample replicates were analyzed by experienced U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analysts and Michigan laboratories personnel, many of whom were newly trained, using EPA Draft Method C-a rapid quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technique that provides same day Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentration results. Beach management decisions (i.e. remain open or issue an advisory or closure) based on E. coli concentration estimates obtained by Michigan labs and by the EPA were compared; the beach management decision agreed in 94% of the samples analyzed. We used the Wilcoxon one-sample signed rank test and nonparametric quantile regression to assess (1) the degree of agreement between E. coli concentrations quantified by Michigan labs versus the EPA and (2) Michigan lab E. coli measurement precision, relative to EPA results, in different years and water body types. The median quantile regression curve for Michigan labs versus EPA approximated the 11 line of perfect agreement more closely as years progressed. Similarly, Michigan lab E. coli estimates precision also demonstrated yearly improvements. No meaningful difference was observed in the degree of association between Michigan lab and EPA E. coli concentration estimates for inland lake and Great Lakes samples (median regression curve average slopes 0.93 and 0.95, respectively). Overall, our study shows that properly trained laboratory personnel can perform Draft Method C to a degree comparable with experienced EPA analysts. It has been suggested, for instance, that nonlinear pulses such as action potentials (APs) can only exist if the membrane state is in vicinity of a TD transition. Herein, two membrane properties in living systems - excitability and velocity - are analyzed for a broad spectrum of conditions (temperature (T), 3D-pressure (p) and pH-dependence). Based on experimental data from Characean cells and a review of literature we predict parameter ranges in which a transition of the membrane is located (15-35°C below growth temperature; 1-3pH units below pH7; at ∼800atm) and propose the corresponding phase diagrams. The latter explain (i) changes of AP velocity with T,p and pH.(ii) The existence and origin of two qualitatively different forms of loss of nonlinear excitability ("nerve block", anesthesia). (iii) The type and quantity of parameter changes that trigger APs. Finally, a quantitative comparison between the TD behavior of 2D-lipid model membranes with living systems is attempted. The typical shifts in transition temperature with pH and p of model membranes agree with values obtained from cell physiological measurements. Taken together, these results suggest that it is not specific molecules that control the excitability of living systems but rather the TD properties of the membrane interface. The approach as proposed herein can be extended to other quantities (membrane potential, calcium concentration, etc.) and makes falsifiable predictions, for example, that a transition exists within the specified parameter ranges in excitable cells.
