Implications for the safe implementation of socially valid treatments for problem behavior are discussed.This study evaluated the effectiveness of the AIM curriculum when implemented in a public-school setting by schoolteachers and direct care staff. Three hundred eighteen students took part in this quasiexperimental design where all received the AIM curriculum every day for an entire school year. The participants completed a series of self-assessments (the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth, the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure, and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire) at the onset of the study and at the end of the school year to assess psychological flexibility, mindfulness, and emotional behavioral skills. Results suggest that at the end of the school year, participants increased psychological flexibility and mindfulness. State standardized testing scores also showed increases school-wide as compared to the previous 2 years. These results suggest that the AIM curriculum may be effective in large school settings, appeared easy to implement by school staff to address the needs of both the individual student and the entire student body, and likely participated in improving school-wide academic success.Values represent qualities or beliefs that are of high priority to individuals or society and represent one of the core processes within acceptance and commitment therapy or training (ACT or ACTr). The current article discusses values and valuing not only as a centralized process in ACT but also as a core process guiding the field of applied behavior analysis with applications that extend across several intervention domains. A relational frame theory model of values as hierarchical frames that augment reinforcing functions that can influence socially meaningful behavior change is reviewed. This basic model is then extended to encompass temporal, deictic, and causal frames. Although this research is promising, more work is needed to further explore the role of values and valuing within ACT, and when they are used within other intervention strategies. Jack is probably best known to behavior analysts for his conceptual contributions to our field (e.g., his work on motivation), but his contributions to the treatment of autism are perhaps his most socially significant achievement. In our tribute to Jack, we will describe how he advanced the treatment of autism not only through his conceptual work and his teaching, but through his role in the development of applied behavior analysis, and in the application of Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior to language assessment and intervention for children and adults with language delays.Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and its counterpart, relational frame theory (RFT), represent emerging areas of research and professional interest for behavior analysts. We extend traditional RFT approaches by emphasizing relational framing as a dynamic pattern of behavior with implications for ACT-based strategies implemented by behavior analysts in practice and in research. We borrow from emerging approaches within affective dynamics, relational density theory, and the hyper-dimensional multilevel model to develop some immediate considerations for practitioners. We then extend an approach grounded in relational dynamics to the six core processes of the ACT hexaflex not only to influence negative affective patterns of relational behavior but also to promote greater psychological flexibility and well-being. Finally, we turn this account inward to discuss our own rigidity as a field and the necessity to engage more flexibly with our own science, ultimately to improve the lives of clients whom we serve.The present article considers acceptance and commitment training (ACT) from the perspective of interbehavioral psychology. Specifically, J. R. Kantor's (1957) explicit distinction between constructs and events is reviewed, with particular attention given to the use of ACT in the practice settings of applied behavior analysis. It is recommended that practitioners be especially sensitive to the distinction between constructs and events as they consider employing ACT interventions. The interbehavioral field construct of interbehavioral psychology is briefly described as a context for conceptualizing both practice and research related to ACT in behavior analysis. Related conceptual issues, especially issues pertaining to the subject matter of behavior analysis and the Skinnerian concept of private events, are considered. The potential value of further integrating interbehavioral thinking into ACT practice and research is described.The purpose of the current study was to examine the effectiveness of implementing acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with three students who displayed disruptive and off-task behaviors in a classroom. A nonconcurrent multiple-baseline across-participants design with an embedded reversal was used to compare the effects of individualized ACT exercises and treatment-control conditions on classroom behaviors that included on-task behavior, vocal disruption, physical aggression, and classroom disruption. Classroom behaviors were measured during 5-min direct observations using continuous 30-s interval recording. During baseline, all participants displayed low levels of on-task engagement and high or varying rates of challenging behaviors. When the individualized ACT intervention was implemented, participants' on-task and challenging behaviors improved compared to baseline and treatment-control conditions; treatment-control conditions produced mixed results. Implications for school-based treatment programs and collaborative transdisciplinary intervention strategies are discussed.
First aiders are commonly exposed to different forms of traumatic event (TE) during their duties, such as Chronic Indirect Vicarious Exposure which refers to an indirect exposure to aversive details of the trauma (APA, 2013). If the psychopathological impact of TE is well documented, the mental health of first aiders remains neglected. Therefore, our main objectives are (i) to study the link between exposure to traumatic events and psychopathological outcomes and (ii) to quantify the rates of mental health disorders among first aiders.
Our sample comprised of 53 volunteer first aiders (21 females and 32 males) with an average age of 32.4 years (
= 13.6 years). Traumatic event exposure and mental health were assessed through a set of validated questionnaires completed online.
Rates of mental health outcomes were higher than within the general population. Females showed higher scores of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than males. PTSD scores were significantly correlated with all mental issues scopression, highlight the need for greater psychosocial support. Resilience training and peer support would be useful interventions in this group.
The global economic burden of
(DM) is expected to reach US$ 745 billion in 2030. The growing prevalence of the disease, mainly type 2 diabetes, is the result of population aging, nutritional transition, which include growing rates of obesity and consumption of foods high in sugar and fat. Brazil is the fourth country in the number of patients with diabetes globally and follows the global trends, with a continuous increase in prevalence.
To estimate the economic burden of DM in Brazil, including all direct and indirect costs.
We used a cost-of-illness approach to calculate the total economic burden of DM. We used official healthcare-related statistics referring to 2016.
We estimated the Brazilian economic burden to reach US$ 2.15 billion in 2016, of which 70.6% are indirect costs related to premature deaths, absenteeism, and early retirement. We estimate that if the rate of growth of diabetes prevalence remains in Brazil, direct and indirect costs of diabetes will more than double by 2030 (an increabetes in Brazil to be higher than the conservative results we found. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to result in even greater costs than what we estimated.
Hypertension is one of the major factors for high mortality of adults in Africa. However, complications occur at lower values than those previously classified as hypertension. Thus, prehypertension is considered as a new category of hypertension and a major risk factor for developing clinical hypertension relative to those with normotension, it has been linked with increased future risk of hypertension as well as cardiovascular diseases.
The objective of this review was to determine prevalence of prehypertension and describe the associated factors of prehypertension in Africa during the past 10 years.
We did a systematic review using the databases PubMed/Medline, and search engine google scholar. We selected sources of publications and conducted an analysis of articles. Keywords in English were prehypertension, high normal blood pressure, high blood pressure, elevated blood pressure, Africa. Keywords in french were préhypertension artérielle, préhypertension, pression artérielle normale haute, pression artérielle normale, Afrique.

Twenty-seven articles were selected. Prevalence of prehypertension ranged from 2.5% to 34% in children and adolescents. In adults, prevalence varied from 32.9% to 56.8%. Several factors were associated with prehypertension in Africa. These factors included age; sex; lifestyle such as smoking, alcohol consumption, low physical activity, overweight and obesity. There were also cardiometabolic factors and few others factors which were associated with prehypertension.

The sensitivity of cellulose fiber networks to environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity is well known. Yet, there is an incomplete understanding of the dependence of the fracture toughness of cellulose networks on environmental conditions. In the current study, we assess the effect of moisture content on the out-of-plane (i.e., z-dir.) fracture toughness of a particular cellulose network, specifically Whatman cellulose filter paper. Experimental measurements are performed at 16% RH along the desorption isotherm and 23, 37, 50, 75% RH along the adsorption isotherm using out-of-plane tensile tests and double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. Cohesive zone modeling and finite element simulations are used to extract quantitative properties that describe the crack growth behavior. Overall, the fracture toughness of filter paper decreased with increasing humidity. Additionally, a novel model is developed to capture the high peak and sudden drop in the experimental force measurement caused by the existence of an initiation region.
