Surgical scrubbing, gowning, and gloving is challenging for medical trainees to learn in the operating room environment. Currently, there are few reliable or valid tools to evaluate a trainee's ability to scrub, gown and glove. The objective of this study is to test the reliability and validity of a checklist that evaluates the technique of surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving (SGG).

This Institutional Review Board-approved study recruited medical students, residents, and fellows from an academic, tertiary care institution. Trainees were stratified based upon prior surgical experience as novices, intermediates, or experts. Participants were instructed to scrub, gown and glove in a staged operating room while being video-recorded. Two blinded raters scored the videos according to the SGG checklist. Reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient for total scores and Cohen's kappa for item completion. The internal consistency and discriminant validity of the SGG checklist were assessed using Cronbach alpha and the Wilcoxon rank sum test, respectively.

56 participants were recruited (18 novices, 19 intermediates, 19 experts). The intraclass correlation coefficient demonstrated excellent inter-rater reliability for the overall checklist (0.990), and the Cohen's kappa ranged from 0.598 to 1.00. The checklist also had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.950). A significant difference in scores was observed between all groups (p < 0.001).

It has the potential to enhance medical education curricula.This narrative review paper is aimed to critically evaluate recent studies of the associations between air pollution and the outcomes in the COVID-19 pandemic. The main air pollutants we have considered are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ground-level ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). We, specifically, evaluated the influences of these pollutants, both individually and collaboratively, across various geographic areas and exposure windows. We further reviewed the proposed biological mechanisms underlying the association between air pollution and COVID-19. Ultimately, we aim to inform policy and public health practice regarding the implications of COVID-19 and air pollution.
Transgender (trans) individuals have unique medical needs and difficulty accessing quality health care, exacerbated by inadequate provider knowledge. Incorporation of trans health care into medical school curricula has increased recently to address this gap. Jigsaw activities emphasize positive interdependence through structured cooperative learning, resulting in increased interest and self-confidence. We implemented a voluntary 2-hour modified jigsaw exercise on trans health care with changes designed to optimize the structure for medical students.

The session was implemented both in person and virtually over 2 years with preclerkship medical students at the end of their endocrine/reproduction physiology course. The session featured a knowledge test with answer discussion followed by a clinical correlation-either a case discussion or video discussion. A pre- and posttest design compared students' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs.

Ophthalmology education has been underemphasized in medical school curricula despite the fact that patient eye-related complaints are commonplace across primary care specialties. Although previous curricula used direct ophthalmoscopy to teach medical students the fundamentals of ophthalmic examination, there has been a growing call to teach these fundamentals through reading fundus photos due to the increasing prevalence and decreased costs of fundus cameras in primary care settings. We developed a virtual workshop to teach ophthalmoscopy to medical students using fundus photography.

First-year medical students were enrolled in a 2-hour, synchronous, virtual ophthalmoscopy workshop as part of an advanced physical exam curriculum at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Students participated in a pretest, introductory lecture, interactive small-group session, and posttest. Breakout groups were led by senior medical students or residents. We compared pre- and posttest results for improved understanding of concepts covered in the workshop.

Of 147 students, the average scores on the pretest and posttest were 39% and 75%, respectively (
< .01). Students were significantly more confident in their ability to identify various pathologies on fundus photography. After the workshop, the student preceptors indicated increased comfort in a teaching role and greater interest in medical education. The preceptors were also more confident in their own ability to interpret fundus photography and in their understanding of various ocular pathologies.

Urogynecologic disorders are highly prevalent, and many physicians across various specialties will encounter and care for patients with pelvic floor disorders. Yet most medical students have had limited to no experience in diagnosing and managing pelvic floor disorders, resulting in a gap in clinical education.

Three virtual and interactive urogynecologic patient cases were developed on an e-learning platform with an overall goal of increasing clinical exposure to various pelvic floor disorders. The cases were integrated into the medical student obstetrics and gynecology clerkship during the 2020-2021 academic year (
= 40). Participants provided feedback regarding usability, acceptability, and educational value of the cases.

Twenty-one students (52%) completed the survey. Ninety percent (
= 19) agreed or strongly agreed that they were satisfied with the cases, and 71% (
= 15) agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend the virtual patient cases to other students. All students (
= 21) felt that the format was easy to use and reported that the cases were appropriate for their level of learning. Most students felt that the cases increased or significantly increased their confidence regarding nonsurgical and surgical management options for pelvic floor disorders.

Our findings suggest that these interactive virtual patient cases are an acceptable, valuable, and effective tool for learners. Utilizing the cases can help mitigate existing disparities in exposure to pelvic floor disorders both highlighted by and preceding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The overdose crisis remains a critical public health problem, creating an urgent need to train physicians in the treatment and management of opioid use disorder (OUD). Our medicine clerkship module aimed to close this gap by training and assessing students' motivational interviewing skills, harm reduction knowledge, and use of nonstigmatizing language in the treatment of patients with OUD.

We evaluated the impact of a small-group, case-based activity and patient panel on the clinical documentation skills of students in a medicine clerkship. Clinical documentation was based on an observed structured clinical examination of a standardized patient with OUD and was evaluated using a grading rubric that followed the module learning objectives. Students also submitted reflections on the curriculum.

Qualitative responses (
= 40) from students evaluating the small-group activity and patient panel exercise revealed overall student satisfaction with the patient panel and exposure to patients living with OUD. Three themes emerged from student reflections (1) humanity, (2) different paths to recovery, and (3) using nonstigmatizing language. For the quantitative test, students' (
= 39) mean clinical documentation scores before and after the small-group activity and patient panel increased from 10.1 to 11.3 out of 13.5 possible points. There was a significant difference between mean pretest and posttest scores (
< .001).

In this study, IR sources with various wavelengths were characterized and a far infrared (FIR) source was used to inactivate viruses. FIR sources have a therapeutic effect on the human body and have been used in medical centers. Virus spread is highly affected by environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and airflow.
