Car Key Repair - How to Fix a Dead Remote

Car remotes provide a great convenience to drivers. They allow you to unlock doors, gain access to trunks, and even start the engine. However, they may stop working at odd times.

Before you head to the dealer, consider some quick fixes when your key fob stops functioning. These steps may save you money.

Keyless Entry System

You don't need to search for keys in your purse or pockets. Just walk to your car, push the button on the keyfob, and the doors will open and the engine will get started. It's an easy feature that makes driving a car more comfortable and secure. The keyless entry system, as any other device, can be damaged by repeated use or by other factors. If you've encountered issues with yours, there are two options: visit the dealership or contact a local locksmith.

Keyless entry systems operate by sending radio signals and then looking for a response signal from a key fob. If the system can recognize the signal, it's triggered to unlock the car doors and activate the onboard computer. Some systems have an additional transmitter in the trunk of the car which can be opened when you put a foot under it.

Each key fob is given an individual digital identification number by the manufacturer. The fob is programmed with a unique process called "programming". This typically involves turning the ignition of the vehicle repeatedly in a specific sequence, and could also require pulling or pushing various buttons and levers or removing fuse.

Once a key fob is programmed to your vehicle's keyless entry system it transmits its digital identity code as well as a function code that tells the car what to do (lock, unlock or open the trunk). The car's receiver confirms the identity of the transmitter through an authentication and encryption process. If it's authorized, the computer on board unlocks the vehicle and then starts the engine.

A savvy criminal could steal and use the code sent between the keyfob and the vehicle. This would require a special device to record the transmission then retransmit it later in the event that the system doesn't anticipate it. To prevent this from happening, most keyless entry systems use a method called rolling code that guarantees that each new transmitter signal received by the vehicle has a different counter value than the previous one.

Batteries

A dead battery is the most frequent reason for car remotes not to work. It's an easy and cheap fix when you have another key fob at your desk to replace the old one with. Most fobs are powered by watches-style batteries, which can be bought at big-box stores or hardware stores for less than $10. A quick search of the internet or your car's owner's manual will provide directions on how to disassemble the fob that you have been using and swap out the battery.

Be careful not to damage any of the circuits or antennas within the case once you've removed your battery. If you do this the key fob will be unprogrammable and won't function. If you need to move key fobs, be cautious. Certain key fobs could have fasteners that can easily pop out and scatter key fob pieces all over your living space.

Most key fobs have a single hole for an screwdriver or similar tool to open the case, however it's a good idea to put your tool on the outside of the case first, as if you were peeling an apple or orange. Be careful not to apply too much pressure as the case of the key fob is usually made of plastic, and is susceptible to breaking or cracking when you apply too the force.

Make sure you ensure that the size and type of battery to the key fob when replacing it. car key immobiliser repair require two batteries, whereas others only have one. Using the incorrect battery could make your key fob remote useless.

After the new battery has been put in place, try using your key fob again to see if it solves your problem. If this fails then you'll have to determine if the fob is suffering from something more complicated that requires a professional diagnosis. If this is the case, you might require it to be reprogrammed by a dealer, or purchase a new key fob altogether.

Buttons

The little buttons on your key fob are small, and they're packed with delicate electronics. It's not a surprise that they're likely to fail from time time. If the button on your car's ignition suddenly stops working, you'll be able to usually fix it yourself.

One of the most common reasons that a car key remote fails to function is that dirt or crud has lodged between the buttons. To clear this up, carefully remove both the batteries and scrub each button with a cotton swab that has been dipped in alcohol rubbing. Make sure to dry the batteries completely before reinstalling them.

It's possible that the key fob was damaged by accident, such as being dropped on concrete or accidentally damaged by something sharp. If this is the case, you can test the function of your key fob using a different one.

The door lock sensor may have stopped working in your car. This is a tiny metal piece that is attached to the door lock button on your key fob, and it's not common for this sensor to break after prolonged use or exposure to weather conditions. To reactivate the sensor, simply try pressing your key button several times without locking or unlocking your doors to reset it.

If all other options fail, you can test the functionality of a spare key by trying to lock and unlock your doors using it. If the spare key does not work, it might be necessary to locate an 24 hour locksmith that can offer car key repair to get your remote operating again.

You can change the settings on your computer if the car key button is working, but it still cannot lock or unlock your vehicle. Be aware that if you've owned the same key fob for some time, it's going to need to be programmed each few months to ensure that it remains in sync with your vehicle. It's not ideal, but it is better than having to purchase an entirely new remote.
