he hated columbia english grad school masters, it was cutthroat bc ppl who survived get fellowships
he got masters n ran away to berlin

journalism abt tiananmen square was distressing
when working at 711 he talked to guys at the counter who were in vietnam war
being a computer scientist in 1968 was not a good thing

from counterculture to cyberculture got turner tenure
its scary to be a new prof at stanford, u think its scary to be a new studnet
they say 400 ppl applied for this position over 2 years, 7 yrs to get tenure and no one has gotten tenured in 20 yrs
the democratic surround- went back and wrote prequel bc stanford is a "2 book school"
seeing silicon valley- ppl promise internet will free u from the political conflicts etc on the ground but this utopia prevents us from actually seeing the ppl, the inequality
this is the most polluted county in america
my most widely 100+ cited paper is abt burning man (?)

stanford daily called him the worst father faculty bc he shared his daughters facebook in class
if my wife and i had to do the dating apps we'd never have met
i worry your generation will miss out on that bc you have to do so much self presentation in media
im not a big fan of the coterm program
coterming works if you dont have to pay for it
thing that made him stand out-secret things the dept wanted, scholarly record, journalist for fancy publiation, w teaching experience (he taught esl), someone who was a bit older who could jump into administrative roles more quickly
