How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. audi spare key for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues with your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
