Upgrades to items can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade it could increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive dependent on who you employ and what you do. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.

Item level is a widely used measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips for items. It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). The average level of the item is listed on the character sheet.

Using the item level will allow players to compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a measure of the item's condition and its quality. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when examining a vendor's inventory.

On your PC, you can check the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full description of the item, including its level. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories about how the item level calculation is carried out. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated using formulas that determine the value of an item's stats actually are. It takes into account the fact that various perks have different value, and also that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is typically close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its haste rating or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The stats of an item can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modification, which are themselves boosted by the player's level.

The upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, while an item with the rare levels will be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.

Another method of altering the stats on an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The affixes can be used to give the item extra damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.

All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold as well as items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other options for rerolling.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which of the available stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However every item will have at least one stat within the same range, unless it's a unique item or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another aspect that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. Like base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't display all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is especially useful in the early game, because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances, which increase with each level of the item. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item, up to 140.


Furthermore, certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available in the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The chance of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. Each item has an initial success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
