How to Repair Car Keys
The car keys are small and might not seem to be important, but they are essential for the proper operation of your car. Replacing a traditional or a modern transponder key can cost up to $200.
There are many ways to repair your car keys yourself for just a fraction of the cost. This article will address the most frequent car keys problems and the DIY solutions to fix them.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Cars come with a remote key fob that makes opening the doors and trunk easier than ever before. The battery of the device is prone to dying. There are a few strategies you can use to resolve this issue quickly.
Examine if your vehicle is still in ignition mode. If it is, the battery on the key fob could simply be depleted instead of dead. To test this, push the button on the key fob straight up against the vehicle's ignition button. If it works, the battery is probably in good condition and only needs to be changed.
To replace the battery inside the fob, pry the case open using an screwdriver. Do not apply too much force since this could cause the fob's casing to split. If the fob won't open Try using your pry tool more than once around the outside of case.
Open the electronic part of your vehicle after you have removed the mechanical key. Insert the new battery and snap back the shell. If the key fob won't work after this, there could be a larger problem with your car's remote start system that requires a professional diagnostic. If this is the case, a reliable mechanic should be able to help you. You can also call roadside assistance for help with your vehicle in case you need it.
Broken Key Ring
There are a few things that you can do in the event that your key fob won't function because the ring is broken. Examine if you can find the broken piece in the ignition. If it's still there the ignition, take it out without damaging the ignition lock or the door lock. Contact a locksmith if are having difficulty getting rid of the key. They have the right tools to safely remove a damaged key from the ignition.
A broken car key could also be caused by corrosion on the plastic frame or circuit board. You can clean the circuit board using a cotton swab with ruby alcohol. This will remove any corrosion and ensure the contact pads don't become damaged.
If your key isn't starting because the ring broke, you may be able to repair it with a strong wire or nail to seal the hole. Superglue can be used to repair damaged key rings. After cleaning the ring with a moist cloth, apply a small amount superglue on each end of the wire or nail. Press the pieces together and allow them to dry before using your car. These DIY solutions might seem appealing, but they're only temporary solutions. It is best to employ an expert locksmith for repairs that last. They have the experience and tools to repair the broken key quickly and efficiently. They can even replace the battery in the key fob and change it's programming if required.
Broken Key Blade
Some key blades can break because of a lot wear and tear. If this happens, you should probably buy a new blade. Fortunately, this issue isn't as severe as it appears at first. The most significant issue is that the metal blade snapped off the case.
One solution is to spray the key hole with lubricant. Then, you can use pliers, tweezers, or a pin to grab the broken end of the key and pull it out. If the key is magnetic, you could also use a magnet to pull it out. Be careful not to use a magnetic tool on an ignition key since it could cause the tumbler of the lock to break.
Contact a locksmith immediately if you are unable to remove the broken piece of the key. They have the right tools that can safely remove keys without causing damage.
Super glue can be used to fix a snapped lock. Apply a small amount of the glue to the edges and press them together. Make sure the glue has dried before inserting the key into the lock. This method is not very reliable, and you may have to repeat it a few times before it does the trick. In addition the super glue might not be enough to hold the key together. This is more of a stopgap measure than a permanent solution.
Broken Plastic Loop
If the plastic loop is damaged, it can make the key ineffective. This is a relatively easy fix. For a replacement, you can use wire that is thick or a finishing nail. For each end of the nail or wire, drill two holes into the loop of plastic. Cut the wire or nail to key width, and then place tiny drops of superglue in each hole. Put car key remote repair or wire into the holes to close them and allow it to dry.
A locksmith who sells replacement shells is a different option. They can transfer the programmable section of your key into the new shell and cut new blades for only a fraction of the price.
This isn't the best solution, but it will allow you to travel again if your key has broken in half. It can be difficult to repair if the key blade is inside the ignition, however. You can try using a hair clip, a needle or an extractor tool to pull the broken part out of the ignition, but this can be risky if not cautious. Contact a locksmith who has special tools to safely remove broken keys from ignitions. You can also have a new key made with the correct cuts for the ignition of your car.
Broken Master Key
If a key gets damaged inside the lock, you'll need to find it before it's completely destroyed. You can use the tweezers, lubricants and needle nose pliers for grabbing the fragment of a broken key.
To begin, spray the interior of your lock with a lubricant, such as WD-40 or graphite powder. car key immobiliser repair could also try the hacksaw method, that involves carefully sliding the blade along the side of the broken key and connecting to a few of the teeth - if you succeed in doing this you will be able to remove the broken key from the lock.
Many hardware stores offer tools for key extraction that spiral. It is a thin flexible rod with spiral threads that can be inserted into the keyway and then bent into the broken part of the key. Once it is firmly anchored to the serrations you can twist the bar around and then pull it against the damaged section of the key.
It's worth attempting to remove a master key that's broken prior to calling a professional locksmith. If you are unable to remove the broken piece, you'll need to call a locksmith. A locksmith can give you a new key that can be programmed with the transponder in your car.
