Applying PICRUSt and 16S rRNA practical characterisation to predicting co-digestion secrets to various pet manures for biogas manufacturing.
The PBPK-reverse dosimetry estimated daily intakes at the 95th percentile ranged between 22.53 and 29.90 μg/kg/day for toddlers and young children. These exceeded the reference dose (RfD) of 20 μg/kg bw/day of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) based on the increased relative liver weight. Although, food was considered the primary source of DEHP, contributing to a total exposure of 50.8-75.1%, the effect of exposure to indoor dust should not be overlooked. The occurrence of high levels of DEHP in indoor dust collected from Korean homes suggests the use of a wide variety of consumer products containing DEHP. Furthermore, more attention should be paid to the high exposure levels of DEHP, especially in young children. Therefore, it is necessary to perform continuous monitoring of the indoor dust, consumer products, and the body burden of children. As an emerging peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation catalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is non-toxic and eco-friendly, while its poor catalytic performance hinders the application of pristine g-C3N4. Herein, a simple LiCl/KCl molten salts-assisted thermal polymerization method was adopted to promote the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4. With the insertion of Li/K dopants and the introduction of surface cyano defects, the modified catalyst exhibited greatly enhanced ability on PMS activation towards acetaminophen removal, observing a 13 times higher rate constant than pristine g-C3N4 (k = 0.0435 min-1 vs. 0.0033 min-1). The main reactive oxygen species for pollutant degradation were identified as sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen. The wavefunction analysis at excited states based on density functional theory suggests that the introduction of cyano defects greatly promotes the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, thereby achieving higher photocatalytic efficiency. In addition, the doping of Li/K significantly enhances the interaction between PMS and the catalyst surface, and orients the electron transfer from PMS to catalyst to generate non-radical species singlet oxygen, which improves the catalyst resistance to anions-containing water matrices.
Although the basic causes of obesity and cardiovascular illness have been extensively researched, little is known about the influence of environmental variables such as heavy metals on obesity development and cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. The assumption that arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) exposure impact obesity and predictors of cardiovascular disease was explored in this study.

A questionnaire was used to gather demographic information as well as certain determinants of exposure to As, Pb, Cr, and Zn from 106 children and adolescents aged 6 to 18. Physical tests (height, weight, waist circumference (WC), BMI, BMI Z-score, Systolic blood pressure (SBP), Diastolic blood pressure (DBP)), blood samples for clinical trials (Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) (, and urine samples for urinary creatinine measurement and measures of As, Pb, Cr, and Zn in urine were obtainend Zn can impact obesity and cardiovascular disease markers. The current research was a cross-sectional study, which necessitates group studies and case studies to evaluate causal relationships.Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) has been generally considered a refractory DOM component for drinking water treatment. However, this judgement is made without clear understandings on the removal behaviors of individual fDOM fractions. Therefore, the removals of high, medium and low molecular weight (MW), as well as hydrophobic fDOM fractions in a natural surface water were determined in this study for selected bench- and full-scale water treatment processes. The results showed that low MW ( less then 1000 Da) and hydrophobic fractions of protein-like fDOM were more refractory than other fractions and even released during coagulation and ozonation processes. The corresponding removal efficiencies ranged -25.7%-68.6%. Besides, similar-sized, tyrosine- and tryptophan-like fDOM (F-Tyr and F-Trp) fractions exhibited distinct removal behaviors. Coagulation and powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption were ineffective in removing both types of fractions. Ozonation and ion exchange (IX) more effectively removed F-Trp, while F-Tyr fractions were more prone to nanofiltration (NF). Moreover, the integration of coagulation and IX pretreatment moderately enhanced F-Trp removal, but not F-Tyr removal by NF. However, the release of protein-like substances during ozonation, coagulation, and activated carbon-sand filtration adversely affected fDOM removal in a full-scale treatment plant. These findings highlighted the persistency of protein-like fDOM fractions in drinking water treatment processes.Graphene has found important applications in various areas and hundred tons of graphene materials are annually produced. It is crucial to investigate both the negative and positive environmental effects of graphene materials to ensure the safe applications and develop environmental applications. In this study, we reported the stimulating effects of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azotobacter chroococcum. RGO stimulated the cell growth of A. chroococcum at 0.010-0.500 mg/mL according to the growth curves and the colony-forming unit (CFU) increases. RGO wrapped over the A. chroococcum cells without inducing ultrastructural changes. RGO decreased the leakage of cell membrane, but slight oxidative stress was observed in A. chroococcum. RGO promoted the nitrogen fixation activity of A. chroococcum at 0.5 mg/mL according to both isotope dilution method and acetylene reduction activity measurements. Consequently, the increases of soil nitrogen contents were evidenced, in particular about 30% increase of organic nitrogen occurred at 0.5 mg/mL of RGO. In addition, RGO might possibly benefit the plant growth through enhancing the indoleacetic acid production of A. chroococcum. These results highlighted the positive environmental effects of graphene materials to nitrogen-fixing bacteria in nitrogen cycle.Hydrophobization of hemicellulose causes melt processing and makes them stretchable thermoplastics. Understanding how native and/or appended side chains in various hemicelluloses after chemical modification affect melt processing and material properties can help in the development of products for film packaging and substrates for stretchable electronics applications. Herein, we describe a one-step and two-step strategy for the fabrication of flexible and stretchable thermoplastics prepared by compression molding of two structurally different arabinoxylans (AX). For one-step synthesis, the n-butyl glycidyl ether epoxide ring was opened to the hydroxyl group, resulting in the introduction of alkoxide side chains. The first step in the two-step synthesis was periodate oxidation. Because the melt processability for AXs having low arabinose to xylose ratio (araf/xylp less then 0.5) have been limited, two structurally distinct AXs extracted from wheat bran (AXWB, araf/xylp = 3/4) and barley husk (AXBH, araf/xylp = 1/4) were used to investigate the effect of araf/xylp and hydrophobization on the melt processability and properties of the final material. Melt compression processability was achieved in AXBH derived samples. DSC and DMA confirmed that the thermoplastics derived from AXWB and AXBH had dual and single glass transition (Tg) characteristics, respectively, but the thermoplastics derived from AXBH had lower stretchability (maximum 160%) compared to the AXWB samples (maximum 300%). Higher araf/xylp values, and thus longer alkoxide side chains in AXWB-derived thermoplastics, explain the stretchability differences. In the present study, eight indigenous Bacillus thuringiensis isolates of Western Ghats of India with more than 90% toxicity against Helicoverpa armigera were characterized for cry2A gene sub families. Seven of the eight isolates harboured cry2Aa, cry2Ab and cry2Ac genes alone and or in combination. Further, the indigenous cry2Aa gene(s) from Bacillus thuringiensis isolate Nn10 which showed 100% mortality against Helicoverpa armigera was cloned and expressed into recombinant Bt strains for management of resistance development in insects. The ORF of cry2Aa (∼1.9 kb) gene(s) from Nn10 isolate was ligated with T/A vector (pTZ57 R/T) and expressed in E. coli, DH5α. Automated sequence analysis of newly cloned recombinant cry2Aa revealed 99% homology to 916 bases in the 3' region of minus strand and 100% homology with 720 bases in the 5' region of holotype cry2Aa1 gene. The partial Cry2Aa amino acid sequence of Bt strain, Nn10, deduced from the nucleotide sequence generated by M13F primer showed four amino acid variation in comparison to Cry2Aa1 holotype, at 338, 345, 346 and 489th position of ORF and the sequence was submitted to the NCBI. Further the expression of ORF of cry2Aa of Nn10 into acrystalliferous Bt strain, 4Q7 using expression vector pHT3P2T under the transcriptional control of cry3Aa promoter and cry2Aa terminator. Leptomycin B CRM1 inhibitor SDS PAGE analysis of recombinant protein exhibited a prominent band of about 65 kDa. Bioassay studies revealed that recombinant proteins, Cry2Aa of Nn10 was toxic to Helicoverpa armigera with LC50 value of 7.26 μg ml-1.Candida albicans is one of the major pathogens found in superficial and invasive infections. This fungus expresses several virulence factors and fitness attributes that are essential to the pathogenesis. In our previous study using a murine model of serial systemic candidiasis, virulence of the recovered C. albicans was enhanced and several virulence factors were also modified after five successive passages through mice (P1-P5). In this study, we aimed to correlate the different fungal morphologies, as well as the filamentation, invasion, and stress resistance abilities, of the cells recovered after passing through this model of infection with our previous findings regarding virulence. We obtained two colony morphology types from the recovered cells, differing in their peripheral filamentation. The morphotype 1, which presented zero to five filaments in the colony edge, was higher in P2, while morphotype 2, which presented more than five filaments in the colony edge, was predominant from P3 to P5. In general, morphotype 1 showed similar levels regarding filamentation in serum, invasion of agar and cells, and resistance to osmotic, oxidative, and thermal stress in all passages analyzed. The morphotype 2, however, exhibited an enhancement in these abilities over the passages. We observed an accordance with the increased virulence over the passages obtained in our previous study and the increased adaptability profile of morphotype 2. Therefore, we suggest that the behavior observed previously in the pathogenesis and virulence could be attributed, at least in part, to the greater presence and ability of morphotype 2.Plant-derived essential oils (EOs) and commercial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were tested to evaluate their antibacterial and antifungal efficiency against two pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli O157H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium) and three spoilage fungi (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Mucor circinelloides). A broth microdilution assay was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EOs and AgNPs. In the MIC assay, the cinnamon EO, Mediterranean formulation, citrus EO and spherical-shaped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (AGC 1, AGC 0.5, AGPP and AGPPH) showed moderate to high antibacterial and antifungal properties, with MIC ranging from 7.8 to 62.5 ppm for AgNPs and 312.5-1250 ppm for EOs against the tested bacteria and fungi. The possible interaction between the EOs and the AgNPs was determined using a checkerboard method by evaluating fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) values. The combination of two or more EOs and AgNPs (Active combination 1 AGPPH+cinnamon EO, Active combination 2 AGC 0.
