However, there are concerns about the accumulation and dynamics of trace elements in soil amended with sewage sludge biochar over the years. This study examined the effect of sewage sludge biochar, under field conditions for 5 yr, on the accumulation and availability of trace elements in a tropical soil. For this, 15 t ha-1 of sewage sludge biochar produced at 300 and 500 °C were applied in the first two growing seasons. Application was interrupted from the third to the fifth seasons to assess the residual effect of sewage sludge biochar in the soil. The total and available trace element concentrations were determined. The total contents of trace elements showed the following variation in the soil over the 5 yr (mg kg-1) Cd (16.8-20.0), Co (19.5-21.5), Cr (98.2-125.7), Cu (8.1-17.1), Mn (62.9-85.7), Ni (20.3-35.0), Pb (27.0-52.4), and Zn (20.3-35.8). There was no change in the availability of Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb over the years. Additionally, a residual effect of the sewage sludge biochar was the increase in availability of trace elements that are considered essential (Cu, Mn, and Zn) and beneficial elements (Co) for plants. Therefore, in relation to contamination by trace elements, the pyrolysis of sewage sludge of domestic origin proved to be an adequate strategy to enable the safe use of this residue in tropical agriculture.Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are the first to encounter luminal antigens and play an active role in intestinal immune responses. We previously reported that β-glucans, major fungal cell-wall glycans, induced chemokine secretion by IEC lines in a Dectin-1- and Syk-dependent manner. Here, we show that in contrast to β-glucans, stimulation of IEC lines with Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae did not induce secretion of any of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-8, CCL2, CXCL1, and GM-CSF. Commensal fungi and β-glucans activated Syk and ERK in IEC lines. However, only β-glucans activated p38, JNK, and the transcription factors NF-κB p65 and c-JUN, which were necessary for cytokine secretion. Furthermore, costimulation of IEC lines with β-glucans and C. albicans yielded decreased cytokine secretion compared to stimulation with β-glucans alone. Finally, ex vivo stimulation of human colonic mucosal explants with zymosan and C. albicans, leads to epithelial Syk and ERK phosphorylation, implying recognition of fungi and similar initial signaling pathways as in IEC lines. Lack of cytokine secretion in response to commensal fungi may reflect IECs' response to fungal glycans, other than β-glucans, that contribute to mucosal tolerance. Skewed epithelial response to commensal fungi may impair homeostasis and contribute to intestinal inflammation.
A subset of metachronous colon cancer recurrence manifests as peritoneal metastases (PM). Risk factors for metachronous PM recurrence are not well-defined in patients with stage II or III colon cancers after curative resection and standard adjuvant treatments.

Population data from the California Cancer Registry for patients with Stage II or III colon cancer were collected between 2004 and 2012. Multivariate analysis was used to identify factors associated with metachronous PM.

Of the 2077 patients with stage II or III colon cancer, female patients (odds ratio [OR] = 1.84, p = 0.02), T4 primary tumor (OR = 2.36, p = 0.02), mucinous (OR = 3.97, p < 0.01) or signet-ring histology (OR = 6.01, p = 0.01), and right-sided cancer (OR = 2.2, p < 0.01) were found with increased risk of metachronous isolated PM recurrence after curative resection. Median survival after diagnosis for patients without PM recurrence was 22 months, compared with 12 months for PM recurrence (p < 0.001).

PM recurrence groups have a worse overall survival than patients with recurrent disease in other sites. A better understanding of the tumor biology and molecular characteristics of colon cancers likely to recur as PM is needed to explain behavior and identify potential targeted therapy.

We propose here to modify the calculation of the effective electronic coupling using a nonorthogonal configuration interaction approach by (a) using only one set of orbitals, optimized for the triplet state of the molecules, to describe all molecular electronic states, and (b) only taking the leading configurations into consideration. Furthermore, we also studied the basis set convergence of the electronic coupling, and we found, by comparison to the complete basis set limit obtained using the cc-pVnZ series of basis sets, that both the aug-cc-pVDZ and 6-311++G** basis sets are a good compromise between accuracy and computational feasibility. The proposed approach enables future work on larger clusters of molecules than dimers.
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is often used to decrease serum triglyceride levels in hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTGP), although there is a lack of high-quality data directly attributing improved clinical outcomes to TPE. There are currently no large studies evaluating the treatment of HTGP without TPE.

This study retrospectively analyzes clinical and laboratory outcomes of 115 encounters at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) wherein a HTGP patient was treated without TPE and compares these outcomes to those of HTGP patients in the literature treated with TPE.

After management without TPE, the median reduction in serum triglycerides was 48% (IQR 29%-63%) on day one and 74% (IQR 60%-84%) on day two in 115 episodes of acute HTGP. The reductions were comparable to those reported in several large published case series after a course of TPE (65.8% to 81% reduction). In 25 episodes among 24 patients, treatment included admission to an intensive care unit.
