To describe the surgical outcomes of patients that underwent strabismus surgery involving advancement of the muscular insertion line toward the limbus.

The medical records of patients who underwent rectus muscle advancement surgery between January 2009 and June 2019 and had at least 1 year of follow-up were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were classified into one of four types of deviation (1) convergence insufficiency, without distance deviation; (2) small-angle distance esotropia, with diplopia; (3) residual strabismus after previous surgery; and (4) large-angle exotropia. The first group underwent 2 mm advancement of the medial rectus insertion bilaterally; the second, 2-3 mm advancement of the lateral rectus muscle bilaterally; the third, 2-3 mm advancement of the lateral or medial rectus muscle, with or without simultaneous resection; and the fourth, 3 mm advancement of the medial rectus with simultaneous resection, with or after maximum recession of the lateral rectus, bilaterally or unilaterally.

A total of 25 patients were included (mean age, 28.76 ± 22.75 years) 4 with convergence insufficiency, 3 with small-angle distance esotropia and diplopia, 16 with residual strabismus, and 2 with large-angle exotropia. Mean postoperative follow-up was 4.76 ± 2.03 years. Surgery was successful in all patients at 1 year (residual deviation ≤10
), and all but 1 at 5 years; 1 patient required reoperation.

To compare outcomes of unilateral cataract surgery in children aged 2-7 years with the outcomes reported in younger children.

The medical records of patients who underwent unilateral cataract surgery between the ages of 2-7 years were reviewed retrospectively. Traumatic cataracts and ectopia lentis were excluded. Outcomes were compared to those of the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS) for infants up to 7 months of age and the Toddler Aphakia and Pseudophakia Study (TAPS) for toddlers between 7-24 months of age who underwent unilateral cataract surgery.

A total of 68 children were included, with a mean follow-up of 4.3 years. The proportion of intraoperative complications (7%) was significantly lower than that reported in IATS but not significantly different from that of TAPS. In our older cohort, more children (41%) had visual acuity better than 20/40 compared to infants (23% [P < 0.05]) and toddlers (11% [P < 0.001]), with a final median visual acuity of 20/44. The proportion of adverse events in our older cohort was reduced (7%) compared to that of infants (81%) and toddlers (24%). Additional unplanned intraocular surgeries occurred less often (6%) than in the infant cohort (72%). No patients developed glaucoma.

To analyze clinical and demographic data from a twice monthly optometrist-run comprehensive eye program at a high school in a community with high rates of poverty.

Students received comprehensive eye examinations. We collected demographic and ocular data on 429 initial visits from February 2015 to July 2019. Follow-up visits were excluded.

The average student age was 14.2 ± 2.7 years. Of the total, 55.7% were female, 59.7% were Black, and 61.7% had Medicaid. Of the total, 70.2% had a previous eye examination, 60.8% had worn glasses previously, and 24.1% still wore glasses. Hispanic students were less likely than non-Hispanic students to have had a prior eye examination (59.1% vs 75.3% [P = 0.022]) or worn glasses (47.8% vs 63.8% [P= 0.035]). Black students had significantly worse presenting visual acuity in the better seeing eye than White students (logMAR 0.22 vs 0.13 [P = 0.0004]). Of the 256 Black students, 62.7% had improvement of two or more lines, compared with 42.9% of White students (P = 0.01). Of the students who participated, 74.0% received glasses following their examination, and 21 required referrals to ophthalmologists, of whom 13 attended the appointment.

The refraction prediction error (PE) for infants with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is large, possibly related to an effective lens position (ELP) that is different than in adult eyes. If these eyes still have nonadult ELPs as they age, this could result in persistently large PE. We aimed to determine whether ELP or biometry at age 10½ years correlated with PE in children enrolled in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS).

We compared the measured refraction of eyes randomized to primary IOL implantation to the "predicted refraction" calculated by the Holladay 1 formula, based on biometry at age 10½ years. Eyes with incomplete data or IOL exchange were excluded. The PE (predicted - measured refraction) and absolute PE were calculated. Measured anterior chamber depth (ACD) was used to assess the effect of ELP on PE. Multiple regression analysis was performed on absolute PE versus axial length, corneal power, rate of refractive growth, refractive error, and best-corrected visual acuity.

Forty-three eyes were included. The PE was 0.63 ± 1.68 D; median absolute PE, 0.85 D (IQR, 1.83 D). The median absolute PE was greater when the measured ACD was used to calculate predicted refraction instead of the standard A-constant (1.88 D [IQR, 1.72] D vs 0.85 D [IQR, 1.83], resp. [P = 0.03]). Absolute PE was not significantly correlated with any other parameter.

While research on loneliness in later life has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, we still lack diverse qualitative approaches capturing lived experiences of lonely older adults. Approaches to research with older adults instead of on them are also scant in gerontological literature on loneliness. Through solicited diaries, this study aimed to explore how older Australians who were already lonely before the pandemic managed lockdowns (stay-at-home orders) in Victoria, Australia, which lived through one of the longest lockdowns in the world.

This article is based on qualitative diaries completed by 32 older adults (aged 65+). Diaries provide a 'live' document where participants become active research partners, recording and sharing their perceptions and experiences. This method is useful to capture sensitive issues, but to our knowledge has not been employed in loneliness studies. Data were thematically analyzed through identification of themes within and across diaries.

Loneliness was defined by participants as a detrimental absence of companionship and meaningful social interactions. For most, lockdowns exacerbated loneliness, presented new triggers, and upended coping strategies. The disruption of the 'emotion work' involved with managing loneliness led to a reconfiguration of response strategies, including through digital technology, which brought both challenges (e.g., digital ageism) and opportunities (e.g., novel communication forms).

In water bodies, the Al concentrations ranged between 0.001 and 50 mg/L, raising concerns about the health of aquatic organisms. For this reason, zebrafish was chosen as the model, since it is well suited for ecotoxicological studies. Adult specimens were exposed to 11 mg/L of Al for 10, 15 and 20 days to assess both the morphology and the oxidative state of muscle tissue. Considering the involvement of ROS, the activity of the main antioxidant enzymes, metallothioneins contents, but also oxidative damage and enzymes involved in energy consumption and neuromuscular transmission were assessed. Collected data showed an increase in the thickness of the endomysium and resorbed myofibrils in the organisms exposed to Al for 10 days, and an increase of myotomes' size in the organisms exposed to Al for 15 days. Moreover, the organisms exposed for less time to Al, it was evident an activation of anaerobic metabolism and the increased activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferases.
