The diverse world of dermatology has a wealth of protracted and at times tenuous names encompassing disease conditions, characteristic clinical descriptions and signs, among others. Many dermatological entities are identified by toponyms or place names. Although some sound irrelevant and archaic (with only historical importance reminding us of the lively history of the subject), other terminologies aid in easy recollection. In this review, we have succinctly summarized various toponymous description in dermatology covering diseases, signs, scales, criteria and treatments.Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can help mitigate plant responses to water stress, but it is unclear whether AMF do so by indirect mechanisms, direct water transport to roots, or a combination of the two. Here, we investigated if and how the AMF Rhizophagus intraradices transported water to the host plant Avena barbata, wild oat. We used two-compartment microcosms, isotopically labeled water, and a fluorescent dye to directly track and quantify water transport by AMF across an air gap to host plants. Plants grown with AMF that had access to a physically separated compartment containing 18 O-labeled water transpired almost twice as much as plants with AMF excluded from that compartment. Using an isotopic mixing model, we estimated that water transported by AMF across the air gap accounted for 34.6% of the water transpired by host plants. In addition, a fluorescent dye indicated that hyphae were able to transport some water via an extracytoplasmic pathway. Our study provides direct evidence that AMF can act as extensions of the root system along the soil-plant-air continuum of water movement, with plant transpiration driving water flow along hyphae outside of the hyphal cell membrane.Encorafenib is a BRAF inhibitor increasingly used as a second-line treatment for metastatic melanoma and colorectal cancer. BRAF inhibitors have been reported to be associated with new and changing melanocytic lesions, including eruptive naevi. We describe two cases of eruptive naevi secondary to encorafenib used for the treatment of BRAF-mutant metastatic colorectal cancer. The Ambr15 system is an automated, high-throughput bioreactor platform which comprises 24 individually controlled, single-use stirred-tank reactors. This system plays a critical role in process development by reducing reagent requirements and facilitating high-throughput screening of process parameters. However, until now, the system was used to simulate processes involving cells in suspension or growing on microcarriers and has never been tested for simulating cells growing on macrocarriers. Moreover, to our knowledge, a complete production process including cell growth and virus production has never been simulated. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the amenability of the automated Ambr15 cell culture reactor system to simulate the entire SARS-CoV-2 vaccine production process using macrocarriers. To simulate the production process, accessories were first developed to enable insertion of tens of Fibra-Cel macrocarries into the reactors. Vero cell adsorption to Fibra-Cels was then monitored and its adsorption curve was studied. After incorporating of all optimized factors, Vero cells were adsorbed to and grown on Fibra-Cels for several days. During the process, culture medium was exchanged, and the quantity and viability of the cells were followed, resulting in a typical growth curve. After successfully growing cells for 6 days, they were infected with the rVSV-ΔG-Spike vaccine virus. The present results indicate that the Ambr15 system is not only suitable for simulating a process using macrocarriers, but also to simulate an entire vaccine production process, from cell adsorption, cell growth, infection and vaccine virus production.
There are few reports on the distribution of the plasma trough concentration (C
) of teicoplanin in patients with augmented renal clearance (ARC) and on the safety of a high-dose regimen (HD; 800 mg loading dose for q12h three times followed by an 800 mg qd maintenance dose). The objective of this study was to determine the C
values of teicoplanin in ARC patients using HD teicoplanin to provide a reference for individualized medication.
Data on patients treated with teicoplanin from January 2019 to January 2021 were collected retrospectively and divided into ARC (creatinine clearance rate [CCr] >130 ml/min, n=22) and non-ARC (60 ml/min ≤ CCr ≤130 ml/min, n=24) groups. The C
values in the two patient groups were analysed during the HD and the low-dose regimen (LD; all other regimens) on the third day of medication and during the dose maintenance period. Liver and kidney function indexes were also analysed before and after medication.
On the third day of the HD, C
did not differ significantly between the ARC and non-ARC groups (17.3 ± 9.2mg/L [mean ± SD] vs. 15.5 ± 7.9mg/L, p=0.663), while C
in the ARC group was significantly lower for the LD (6.8 ± 3.9mg/L, p=0.039). During the dose maintenance period, C
in the ARC group when receiving the HD (18.3 ± 5.1mg/L) was significantly lower than that in the non-ARC group (25.5 ± 11.9mg/L, p=0.016) and significantly higher than that for the LD (12.2 ± 6.3mg/L, p=0.022). Nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity incidence rates did not differ significantly between these groups.
These results suggest that it is necessary to apply a loading dose of 800 mg (but not higher) q12h three times for patients with ARC, with 800 mg needed as a maintenance dose during severe infection, and 600 mg or 400 mg for mild infection.

Transgenic crops that make insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have revolutionized management of some pests. However, evolution of resistance to Bt toxins by pests diminishes the efficacy of Bt crops. Resistance to crystalline (Cry) Bt toxins has spurred adoption of crops genetically engineered to produce the Bt vegetative insecticidal protein Vip3Aa. Here we used laboratory diet bioassays to evaluate responses to Vip3Aa by pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella), one of the world's most damaging pests of cotton.
Against pink bollworm larvae susceptible to Cry toxins, Vip3Aa was less potent than Cry1Ac or Cry2Ab. Conversely, Vip3Aa was more potent than Cry1Ac or Cry2Ab against laboratory strains highly resistant to those Cry toxins. Five Cry-susceptible field populations were less susceptible to Vip3Aa than a Cry-susceptible laboratory strain (APHIS-S). Relative to APHIS-S, significant resistance to Vip3Aa did not occur in strains selected in the laboratory for > 700-fold resistances relative to the median lethal concentration (LC50 ) from bioassays may be useful for estimating efficacy. The moderate potency of Vip3Aa against Cry1Ac- and Cry2Ab-resistant and susceptible pink bollworm larvae suggests that Bt cotton producing this toxin together with novel Cry toxins might be useful as one component of integrated pest management. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
This paper explores the effects of moderate red wine consumption on the clinical status and symptomatology of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), including the study of the oral and intestinal microbiome.
A case control intervention study in UC patients is designed. Intervention patients (n = 5) consume red wine (250mLday
) for 4 weeks whereas control patients (n = 5) do not. Moderate wine consumption significantly (p<0.05) improves some clinical parameters related to serum iron, and alleviates intestinal symptoms as evaluated by the IBDQ-32 questionnaire. 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicate a non-significant (p>0.05) increase in bacterial alpha diversity after wine intervention in both saliva and fecal microbiota. Additional comparison of taxonomic data between UC patients (n = 10) and healthy subjects (n = 8) confirm intestinal dysbiosis for the UC patients. Finally, analysis of fecal metabolites (i.e., phenolic acids and SCFAs) indicates a non-significant increase (p >0.05) for the UC patients that consumed wine.
Moderate and regular red wine intake seems to improve the clinical status and symptoms of UC patients in the active phase of the disease. However, studies with a greater sample size are required to achieve conclusive results.

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) hyporesponsiveness is an important cause for the undertreatment of anaemia. A decrease in haemoglobin (Hb) levels was observed during the initial stage of the conversion from ESA to roxadustat. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness and safety of adding roxadustat to an ESA for the treatment of ESA-hyporesponsive anaemia in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD).
Patients on PD with ESA-hyporesponsive anaemia were enrolled from January 2020 to April 2020 with a 24-week follow-up period. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/aebsf-hcl.html Patients were treated with roxadustat at a starting dose of 50 or 100 mg thrice weekly without changing the ESA dose. Roxadustat and ESA dose adjustments were made as needed to maintain Hb levels within 11.0 to 13.0g/dl. Efficacy outcomes and safety were assessed.
Nine patients were recruited in the study. Both the cumulative responsive rate and maintenance rate of Hb > 11 g/dl were 100%. Six patients required ESA dose reduction from ≥15,000 UI/week to ≤7000 IU/week at week 24. No drug-related severe adverse events were observed in this study.
The addition of roxadustat effectively and smoothly corrected anaemia in patients who were hyporesponsive to ESA, and permitted reduction of the ESA dose.

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, is considered the most destructive pest of rice in many Asian countries including China. Use of pymetrozine in insect resistance management (IRM) has been one strategy to control this pest. In this study, we reported the status of pymetrozine resistance in Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) collected from China over the period 2017-2021 and selected a strain of N. lugens resistant to pymetrozine and evaluated the cross-resistance, inheritance and fitness costs of the resistance.
Monitoring data (2017-2021) showed that field populations of N. lugens in China developed moderate- to high-level pymetrozine resistance during these 5 years. By continuous selection with pymetrozine in the lab, the pymetrozine selected N. lugens strain (Pym-R
) developed a 225.2-fold resistance compared to a susceptible strain. The Pym-R
strain showed high cross-resistance to dinotefuran (66.6-fold) and low cross-resistance to nitenpyram (5.2-fold) and sulfoxaflor (5.8-fold). Inheritance pattern analysis of Pym-R
revealed that resistance to pymetrozine was polygenic, autosomal and incompletely dominant.
