How to Get an ADHD Assessment in the UK
Getting an ADHD assessment from the NHS can be difficult. The waiting lists can be lengthy and sometimes people are diagnosed with other illness that might explain their issues better for example, depression or anxiety.
Your GP should be attentive to your concerns and be able to understand the reasons why you believe you be suffering from ADHD. They should then refer you to an NHS assessment.
1. See your GP
In England and Wales you can receive an ADHD assessment through the NHS and it could be possible to obtain medication if it's appropriate for you. You will need to see your GP and explain how you suspect you have ADHD, and what effect it is having on your life. Your GP should be aware of this and may ask you to fill in some forms or a screening tool before they recommend you to a specialist for an assessment. For adults, it will be particularly important to prepare an outline of the specific ADHD traits and symptoms you experience in your daily life, and be ready to provide examples when you are asked.
Your psychiatrist will work with you to assess whether or not you suffer from ADHD, and they will employ a variety of techniques and methods, such as symptom checklists, behaviour rating scales, and interviewing you as well as your family members and others who know you well. The psychiatrist will write an account that is based on the information they've gathered. Then, they will share their recommendations with you, which could mean that you are diagnosed with ADHD and, if it is appropriate you should be treated with a medication.
If you discover that your GP is unwilling to refer you to an evaluation or won't prescribe ADHD medication through the NHS, it may be worth looking for another doctor who is more accommodating. The website of Psychiatry-UK offers helpful information on this topic.
In England, you have the legal right to decide where your GP refers you to get an ADHD assessment, so long that the service is offered through the NHS and doesn't cost more than going through the NHS directly. If you're not able to reach an agreement with your local CCG you can ask ICAS for help when submitting an appeal to the national Appeal Panel. If you are located in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales and Northern Ireland, then the NHS has different rules and guidance. You can access services via Right to Choose. Psychiatry UK offers some suggestions regarding this.
2. Request a reference
Depending on where you live in the UK there are two possible options you can choose to get an ADHD assessment. You can first go through the NHS by asking your GP to refer you. This can be a long process, and you may end up waiting several years to receive an appointment. You can also use the 'Right to Choose" route. This is a new legal right that means that should you feel that NHS wait times for an ADHD assessment are too long, you can ask to be directed to a private service through this route.
If you choose to do this, then your GP must be in agreement with this, and must also sign a'shared care agreement' with the provider that you've chosen. Most GPs are reluctant to sign shared care agreements for patients who have been privately diagnosed particularly because they lack the expertise in diagnosing ADHD or prescribing medication for it.
In most cases you can make an appointment with a private provider you prefer. The ADHD specialist will carry out an interview and questionnaire with your child and you (if older than 11) before completing an initial assessment. The clinician will then give you an accurate indication of whether they believe that your symptoms could be caused by ADHD or not.
Following the initial assessment If it is determined that ADHD may be causing your issues, they'll usually send you away with some additional questionnaires to complete for your school or work. They will then set up a follow up appointment to discuss the findings and discuss your diagnosis. This appointment will be an opportunity to discuss any medication options and, if decided that medication is appropriate then your GP will be informed and asked to prescribe it. Any other recommendations relating to support at school or work will be discussed with your specialist and any charges for this will be agreed before starting. Many private providers provide free advice and support between appointments, via emails or phone calls.
3. Get an assessment
Finding an ADHD diagnosis in the UK isn't easy and often, it's mistakenly diagnosed with other mental health issues. The best way to diagnose ADHD is by having an assessment done by a psychiatrist with expertise in the field.
You might have to wait a while to get an assessment through the NHS. If you're worried about the waiting for a long time, ask your GP about 'Right of Choice', a new NHS initiative that gives you the ability to choose the organization that you're referred to for your assessment. This lets you skip the NHS waiting lists and could make the entire process quicker.
When you visit for your ADHD assessment The psychiatrist will take a detailed account of your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. The psychiatrist will then conduct a formal clinical evaluation with the same set of questions. Before your appointment, it might be helpful to write down your experiences and be familiar with the symptoms (traits) of ADHD. It's common for people to forget about their experiences when they discuss them.
The examination will also include physical examinations and interviews with parents, teachers and colleagues. The psychiatrist will need accurate and complete information to determine the most appropriate diagnosis.
If the psychiatrist suspects that you or your child suffer from ADHD or other disorders, they will recommend a thorough diagnosis at a commissioned adult ADHD service. This is an additional appointment which could include a variety of tests including brain scans and psychological tests, to determine the extent of ADHD.
Some people choose to go private to get their ADHD evaluated. This is becoming more common as the NHS waiting list continues to grow. Based on where you live in the UK there are a number of companies that offer private assessments for ADHD. You can search for a list here or speak to your GP to determine which one is best for you. Private examinations can be faster than using the NHS. However your health insurance will not cover the cost.
4. Get a diagnosis
ADHD can cause problems in a wide range of areas. For example, it can affect relationships and work. A clear diagnosis can help in resolving these problems. Unfortunately, because of a increase in people who require ADHD assessments, NHS services are struggling to keep up with demand and wait times can be long. Some people opt to go through a private clinic and pay for their assessments privately. This lets them skip NHS waiting lists and start treatment earlier.
Once you've been diagnosed with ADHD, the next step is to put a treatment plan together. This could be medication, or CBT therapy. click the next page is crucial to think about this before you make your assessment because it will help you determine what the best option for you will be.
Depending on where you reside in the UK, you may be able to get an ADHD assessment through the NHS. If this is the case, you will be referred to a paediatrician or psychiatrist who will assess your symptoms, and determine a diagnosis based on the NICE 87 guidelines.
Self-referral is available in the event that you don't have a GP referral. A private mental health provider will conduct an ADHD assessment. This is usually more efficient than the NHS method, but you should ensure whether your doctor has signed an "Shared Care Agreement" with your private doctor.
When you're tested for ADHD, your expert will ask questions about your past and present behavior. They will look for traits (symptoms) of ADHD, such as inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsiveness. They will also inquire about how these characteristics are affecting your life now. It is useful to familiarise yourself with the criteria for diagnosing ADHD and then write down examples of the ways you have experienced these traits in your life before going for an appointment.
If you are diagnosed with ADHD it can be a life-changing event. It can lead to various treatment options and create a greater sense of self-understanding for those who were previously not diagnosed. It can also lead to better relationships and a happier life.
