Improving Reading Comprehension Skills of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students in System Technological Institute at San Jose del Monte Bulacan Towards Their Strategies and Challenges

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION (Draft)

Background of The Study

Reading comprehension is an important skill, especially for students in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand, wherein the interpretation of complex texts, theories, and historical contexts is very important. Information that needs to be understood, analyzed, and synthesized is crucial for success in academics and for one’s growth in this field. Unfortunately, many senior high school students, particularly in Grade 12 at the System Technological Institute in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, face various challenges that hinder their reading comprehension abilities.

According to recent global assessments indicate that the Philippines ranks among the bottom 10 countries in reading comprehension. Specifically, the 2022 PISA test results reveal that Filipino students struggle significantly with their reading skills, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of the current education system.

The dismal performance underscores the need for comprehensive reforms in education, including improvements in teacher training, curriculum development, and a shift in focus toward fostering critical thinking and practical skills rather than rote memorization.

For this reason, this research would determine the reading comprehension strategies that grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students engage in and establish what kind of hindrances they face in trying to improve their skills. In doing this, the study looks forward to shedding light on how comprehension can be enhanced; thus, it offers useful recommendations not only to the learners but to the instructors as well. The very ultimate aim is to contribute to the academic excellence of Humanities and Social Sciences graduates through their better deliberate optimization of strategies, hence reading them for further academic and professional pursuits.

Statement of the Problem

The objective of this study is to investigate the reading comprehension strategies employed by Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students at STI College San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, as well as the challenges they face in enhancing their reading skills

Significance of the Study

This study has its importance and benefits to different people. The result of this study will benefit the following

Students. Learning how to improve reading comprehension to help Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences by knowing how to improve reading comprehension.
Teachers. The data given would guide the teachers to develop and discover new approach to students to focus by applying this.

Scope and Delimitation
For this study, we chose the Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences strand at STI College San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, and we learned that there are 123 students enrolled overall. Eighteen of the 123 pupils will be used as a sample when the survey is conducted.
