We demonstrated, both numerically and analytically, that the critical synaptic strength and the network average degree obey a power-law relation with an exponent of -1. Our study provides a possible dynamical network mechanism of the transitions between tonic and bursting neural activities for the wakefulness-sleep cycle, and of the SWA during sleep. Further interesting and challenging investigations are briefly discussed as well. The present paper analytically reveals the effects of frequency mismatch on the stability of an equilibrium point within a pair of Stuart-Landau oscillators coupled by a delay connection. By analyzing the roots of the characteristic function governing the stability, we find that there exist four types of boundary curves of stability in a coupling parameters space. These four types depend only on the frequency mismatch. The analytical results allow us to design coupling parameters and frequency mismatch such that the equilibrium point is locally stable. We show that, if we choose appropriate frequency mismatches and delay times, then it is possible to induce amplitude death with strong stability, even by weak coupling. In addition, we show that parts of these analytical results are valid for oscillator networks with complete bipartite topologies.Electrostatic two-stream instabilities play essential roles in an electrostatic collisionless shock formation. They are a key dissipation mechanism and result in ion heating and acceleration. Since the number and energy of the shock-accelerated ions depend on the instabilities, precise identification of the active instabilities is important. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a multicomponent plasma reveal ion reflection and acceleration at the shock front, excitation of a longitudinally propagating electrostatic instability due to a nonoscillating component of the electrostatic field in the upstream region of the shock, and generation of up- and down-shifted velocity components within the expanding-ion components. A linear analysis of the instabilities for a C_2H_3Cl plasma using the one-dimensional electrostatic plasma dispersion function, which includes electron and ion temperature effects, shows that the most unstable mode is the electrostatic ion-beam two-stream instability (IBTI), which is weakly dependent on the existence of electrons. The IBTI is excited by velocity differences between the expanding protons and carbon-ion populations. There is an electrostatic electron-ion two-stream instability with a much smaller growth rate associated with a population of protons reflecting at the shock. The excitation of the fast-growing IBTI associated with laser-driven collisionless shock increases the brightness of a quasimonoenergetic ion beam.We show that the number of solitons produced from an arbitrary initial pulse of the simple wave type can be calculated analytically if its evolution is governed by a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation provided this number is large enough. The final result generalizes the asymptotic formula derived for completely integrable nonlinear wave equations such as the standard NLS equation with the use of the inverse scattering transform method. The long-term behavior of a modulationally unstable conservative nonintegrable system is known to be characterized by the soliton turbulence self-organization process. We consider this problem in the presence of a long-range interaction in the framework of the Schrödinger-Poisson (or Newton-Schrödinger) equation accounting for the gravitational interaction. check details By increasing the amount of nonlinearity, the system self-organizes into a large-scale incoherent localized structure that contains "hidden" coherent soliton states The solitons can hardly be identified in the usual spatial or spectral domains, but their existence can be unveiled in the phase-space representation (spectrogram). We develop a theoretical approach that provides the coupled description of the coherent soliton component [governed by the Schrödinger-Poisson equation (SPE)] and of the incoherent structure [governed by a wave turbulence Vlasov-Poisson equation (WT-VPE)]. We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that the incoherent structure inimulate nonlinear optics experiments in highly nonlocal nonlinear (thermal) media that mimic the long-range nature of gravitational interactions. The nonlinear evolution of mixing layer in cylindrical Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) turbulence is studied theoretically and numerically. The scaling laws including the hyperbolic cosine growth for outward mixing layer and the cosine growth for inward mixing layer of the cylindrical RT turbulence are proposed for the first time and verified reliably by direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. It is identified that the scaling laws for the cylindrical RT turbulence transcend the classical power law for the planar RT turbulence and can be recovered to the quadratic growth as cylindrical geometry effect vanishes. Further, characteristic time- and length scales are reasonably obtained based on the scaling laws to reveal the self-similar evolution features for the cylindrical RT turbulence.Low-frequency Raman spectroscopy was used to study the dynamic response on a nanometer scale of aqueous suspensions of two-component lipid vesicles. Binary mixtures of saturated phospholipid (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DPPC) and cholesterol are interesting for possible coexistence of solidlike and liquid-ordered phases, while the phase coexistence was not reported for unsaturated phospholipid (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DOPC) and cholesterol mixtures. link2 The DOPC-DPPC mixtures represent the well-documented case of coexisting domains of solidlike and liquid-disordered phases. These three series of lipid mixtures are studied here. A broad peak with the maximum in the range of 30-50cm^-1 and a narrow peak near 10cm^-1 are observed in the Raman susceptibility of the binary mixtures and attributed to the acousticlike vibrational density of states and layer modes, respectively. Parameters of the broad and narrow peaks are sensitive to lateral and conformational hydrocarbon chain ordering. It was also demonstrated that the low-frequency Raman susceptibility of multicomponent lipid bilayers allows one to determine the phase state of lipid bilayers and distinguish the homogeneous distribution of molecular complexes from coexisting domains with sizes above several nanometers. Thus, the low-frequency Raman spectroscopy provides unique information in studying phase coexistence in lipid bilayers. The structure of the sheath and the current exchange of two-dimensional electron-emitting objects with elliptic cross section immersed at rest in Maxwellian plasmas are investigated with an energy-conserving stationary Vlasov-Poisson solver free of statistical noise. The parameter domains for current collection within the orbital-motion-limited (OML) regime and current emission in space-charge-limited (SCL) conditions were studied by varying the characteristic dimension of the ellipse, its eccentricity, and the emission level. The analysis reveals the correlations between the onset of the non-OML and SCL regimes and the local curvature of the ellipse. As compared to nonemitting ellipses, electron emission broadens the parameter domain for OML current collection for ions and reduces considerably the current drop for non-OML conditions. Under identical plasma environments, elliptic bodies are more prone to operate under non-OML and SCL conditions than cylinders. Their emitted current in SCL conditions can be computed accurately from well-known results for cylinders if appropriate dimensionless variables and an equivalent radius are used. The role of the eccentricity, which acts as an integrability-breaking parameter, on the filamentation of the distribution function of the attracted species is studied.A compressible Cahn-Hilliard fluid model is derived from the kinetic theory of dense gas mixtures. link3 The fluid model involves a van der Waals and Cahn-Hilliard gradient energy, a generalized Korteweg's tensor, a generalized Dunn and Serrin heat flux, and Cahn-Hilliard-type diffusive fluxes. Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy for gas mixtures, a Chapman-Enskog method is used-with a proper scaling of the generalized Boltzmann equations-as well as higher-order Taylor expansions of pair distribution functions. A Euler and van der Waals model is obtained at zeroth order, while the Cahn-Hilliard fluid model is obtained at first order, involving viscous, heat, and diffusive fluxes. The Cahn-Hilliard extra terms are associated with intermolecular forces and pair interaction potentials. We apply connectedness percolation theory to fractal liquids of hard particles, and make use of a Percus-Yevick liquid state theory combined with a geometric connectivity criterion. We find that in fractal dimensions the percolation threshold interpolates continuously between integer-dimensional values, and that it decreases monotonically with increasing (fractal) dimension. The influence of hard-core interactions is significant only for dimensions below three. Finally, our theory incorrectly suggests that a percolation threshold is absent below about two dimensions, which we attribute to the breakdown of the connectedness Percus-Yevick closure.Sender-receiver games are simple models of information transmission that provide a formalism to study the evolution of honest signaling and deception between a sender and a receiver. In many practical scenarios, lies often affect groups of receivers, which inevitably entangles the payoffs of individuals to the payoffs of other agents in their group, and this makes the formalism of pairwise sender-receiver games inapt for where it might be useful the most. We therefore introduce group interactions among receivers and study how their interconnectedness in higher-order social networks affects the evolution of lying. We observe a number of counterintuitive results that are rooted in the complexity of the underlying evolutionary dynamics, which has thus far remained hidden in the realm of pairwise interactions. We find conditions for honesty to persist even when there is a temptation to lie, and we observe the prevalence of moral strategy profiles even when lies favor the receiver at a cost to the sender. We confirm the robustness of our results by further performing simulations on hypergraphs created from real-world data using the SocioPatterns database. Altogether, our results provide persuasive evidence that moral behavior may evolve on higher-order social networks, at least as long as individuals interact in groups that are small compared to the size of the network. The concept of kirigami has been extensively utilized to design deployable structures and reconfigurable metamaterials. Despite heuristic utilization of classical kirigami patterns, the gap between complex kirigami tessellations and systematic design principles still needs to be filled. In this paper, we develop a unified design method for deployable quadrilateral kirigami tessellations perforated on flat sheets with different topologies. This method is based on the parametrization of kirigami patterns formulated as the solution of a linear equation system. The geometric constraints for the deployability of parameterized cutting patterns are given by a unified theorem covering different topologies of the flat sheets. As an application, we employ the design method to achieve desired shapes along the deployment path of kirigami tessellations, while preserving the topological characteristics of the flat sheets. Our approach introduces interesting perspectives for the topological design of kirigami-inspired structures and metamaterials.
