The risk of locomotive syndrome (LS) has been proposed as a criterion for evaluating physical ability. The expression levels of circulating miRNAs (c-miRNAs) are predictors of various diseases. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum levels of several miRNAs and LS.

We enrolled 423 participants in whom we conducted a survey with the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25) and measured the serum levels of 21 c-miRNAs. The relationship between the GLFS-25 and each c-miRNA was evaluated with a linear regression analysis, and independent associations between the GLFS-25 and each c-miRNA were assessed with a multiple regression analysis using various independent variables.

Only the serum level of miR-199 was significantly associated with LS after adjustment for age, BMI, sex, and all comorbidities. The receiver operating characteristics curve for the predictive value of the miR-199 level to indicate the presence or absence of LS risk had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.576 (95% confidence interval 0.501-0.651).

This study was performed to internally derive and then validate risk score systems using preoperative and intraoperative variables to predict the occurrence of any-stage (stage 1, 2, 3) and stage-3 acute kidney injury (AKI) within seven days of cardiac surgery.

Adult patients undergoing open cardiac surgery between January 1, 2012, and January 1, 2019.

The clinical data were divided into the following two groups a derivation cohort (n = 43,799) and a validation cohort (n = 14,600). AKI was defined using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes criteria. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to develop the prediction models. The overall prevalence of any-stage AKI and stage-3 AKI after cardiac surgery were 34.3% and 1.7%, respectively. The discriminatory ability of the any-stage AKI prediction model measured with the area under the curve (AUC) was acceptable (AUC = 0.69, 95% confidence interval 0.68-0.69), and the calibration measured with the Hosmer-Lemeshow test was good (p = 0.95). The AUC for the stage-3 AKI prediction model was 0.84 (95% confidence interval 0.83-0.85), and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test also indicated a good calibration (p = 0.73).

Percutaneous liver biopsy with histopathologic analysis is a valuable tool for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment evaluation of liver diseases. Its ultrasound-guided performance is useful, making the procedure safer and reducing the risk for complications and hospital stay. Our aim was to describe the indications, histopathologic study, and complications associated with the performance of ultrasound-guided percutaneous liver biopsy in pediatric patients.

The study included 102 ultrasound-guided percutaneous liver biopsies performed on patients <16 years of age, within the time frame of January 2014 and December 2019. The information was obtained from electronic files and histopathologic studies and the data were analyzed through descriptive statistics.

A total of 102 procedures were carried out on 99 patients. Mean patient age was 72 months and 58.8% of the patients were female. Over 65% of the indications for liver biopsy included autoimmune hepatitis (23.5%), elevated liver enzymes (21.5%), and chronic liver disease (20.5%). Four patients presented with immediate complications (3.9%), three of which were major (2.9%), concurring with that reported in the international literature.

Our study corroborates the importance of ultrasound-guided liver biopsy in the diagnosis and follow-up of pediatric patients. The procedure also had a low complication rate of only 3.9%.
