Based on many published reports, African American patients with cancer experience higher pain severity scores and lower pain relief than White patients. This disparity results from undertreatment of pain and is compounded by low adherence to prescribed non-opioid and opioid analgesics among African American patients with cancer. Therefore, addressing the perceived barriers and facilitators to pain assessment management among critical care nurses is crucial.

A systematic search of pain assessment and management in critical care patient-relevant literature from four databases was done, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

The barriers and facilitators were categorized into four groups nurse-related, patient-related, physician-related, and system-related. The most frequently reported barriers in this study included nurses' lack of knowledge regarding the use of pain assessment tools, patients' inability to communicate, physicians' prescription of ant protocol tailored to effectively assess and promptly treat pain in critical care patients.
The findings of our study could help hospital managers in developing continuous education and staff development training programs on assessing and managing pain for critical care patients. Thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block was recently described as a regional anesthetic technique to achieve analgesia for lumbar spine surgery by blocking the dorsal rami of spinal nerves. The study aims to test the hypothesis that TLIP block can offer pain control and reduce the perioperative analgesic requirement in patients undergoing spinal surgery.

There were 60 patients scheduled for lumbar spine surgery who were randomly assigned into two equal groups, TLIP and control groups. Patients in the TLIP group received general anesthesia and TLIP block while patients in the control group received general anesthesia alone. The primary outcome was the analgesic consumption in the first postoperative 24 hours, while intraoperative additional analgesic needs, time to the first request of postoperative analgesia, and pain scores were the secondary outcomes.

At 24 hours postoperatively, morphine consumption was lower in the TLIP group (5.13±1.55) versus the control group (14.33±2.58) mg. The multivariable linear regression models were performed to evaluate the associations between testosterone, estrogen, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and BMD.

To investigate the relationship between admission resting heart rate (RHR) and all-cause mortality in elderly patients with hip fracture.

A retrospective cohort study with 837 patients based on the established hip fracture database was conducted. Admission RHR was measured via electrocardiogram, and patients were grouped by the median RHR value (beats per minute, bpm). The main outcomes were 1-year and total all-cause mortality. Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline were used to assess the relationship between RHR and mortality. Sensitivity analyses were further performed to determine whether the results were stable.

The mean and median RHR were 82.3 and 80.0 bpm, respectively. After a median follow-up of 31.8 months, the 1-year and total all-cause mortality were 17.6% and 31.2%. Multivariable Cox analyses showed that high RHR was an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality (
