Different extensions of the standard model of particle physics, such as braneworld or mirror matter models, predict the existence of a neutron sterile state, possibly as a dark matter candidate. This Letter reports a new experimental constraint on the probability p for neutron conversion into a hidden neutron, set by the STEREO experiment at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin. The limit is p less then 3.1×10^-11 at 95% C.L. improving the previous limit by a factor of 13. This result demonstrates that short-baseline neutrino experiments can be used as competitive passing-through-walls neutron experiments to search for hidden neutrons. We find that a porous piezoelectric medium stabilizes electrodeposition and suppresses dendrite. The effect is 6 orders of magnitude larger than mechanical blocking. We develop a theory integrating electrochemistry, piezoelectricity, and mechanics. A piezoelectric overpotential is derived, which reveals a fundamental relation to surface charge density, dielectric property of the medium, electrolyte concentration and diffusivity, and the reaction coefficient. The simulations show that piezoelectric medium suppresses electrodeposition on any protrusion, leading to a flat, dendrite-free surface.van der Waals materials possess an innate layer degree of freedom and thus are excellent candidates for exploring emergent two-dimensional ferroelectricity induced by interlayer translation. However, despite being theoretically predicted, experimental realization of this type of ferroelectricity is scarce at the current stage. Here, we demonstrate robust sliding ferroelectricity in semiconducting 1T^'-ReS_2 multilayers via a combined study of theory and experiment. Room-temperature vertical ferroelectricity is observed in two-dimensional 1T^'-ReS_2 with layer number N≥2. The electric polarization stems from the uncompensated charge transfer between layers and can be switched by interlayer sliding. For bilayer 1T^'-ReS_2, the ferroelectric transition temperature is estimated to be ∼405  K from the second harmonic generation measurements. Our results highlight the importance of interlayer engineering in the realization of atomic-scale ferroelectricity. We report the observation of magnetoresistance (MR) that could originate from the orbital angular momentum (OAM) transport in a permalloy (Py)/oxidized Cu (Cu^*) heterostructure the orbital Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance. The angular dependence of the MR depends on the relative angle between the induced OAM and the magnetization in a similar fashion as the spin Hall magnetoresistance. Despite the absence of elements with large spin-orbit coupling, we find a sizable MR ratio, which is in contrast to the conventional spin Hall magnetoresistance which requires heavy elements. Through Py thickness-dependence studies, we conclude another mechanism beyond the conventional spin-based scenario is responsible for the MR observed in Py/Cu^* structures-originated in a sizable transport of OAM. Our findings not only suggest the current-induced torques without using any heavy elements via the OAM channel but also provide an important clue towards the microscopic understanding of the role that OAM transport can play for magnetization dynamics.Unlike the chirality of electrons, the intrinsic chirality of phonons has only surfaced in recent years. Here, we report on the effects of the interaction between electrons and chiral phonons in two-dimensional materials by using a nonperturbative solution. We show that chiral phonons introduce inelastic Umklapp processes resulting in copropagating edge states that coexist with a continuum. Transport simulations further reveal the robustness of the edge states. Our results hint on the possibility of having a metal embedded with hybrid electron-phonon states of matter. We demonstrate coupling between the motions of two independently trapped ions with a separation distance of 620  μm. The ion-ion interaction is enhanced via a room-temperature electrically floating metallic wire which connects two surface traps. Tuning the motion of both ions into resonance, we show flow of energy with a coupling rate of 11 Hz. Quantum-coherent coupling is hindered by strong surface electric-field noise in our device. Our ion-wire-ion system demonstrates that room-temperature conductors can be used to mediate and tune interactions between independently trapped charges over distances beyond those achievable with free-space dipole-dipole coupling. This technology may be used to sympathetically cool or entangle remotely trapped charges and enable coupling between disparate physical systems. The trapping of a lower hybrid wave in the tokamak edge transport barrier is predicted, reducing by 3 orders of magnitude the excitation threshold for the absolute parametric decay instability that leads to side scattering of the ordinary microwave pump in electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) experiments. This process is similar to the stimulated Raman scattering instability in laser physics and can result in substantial anomalous scattering of the pump wave, like in laser fusion experiments. The corresponding broadening of the ECRH power deposition profile can reduce the ability of this method to control the neoclassical tearing modes both in present day machines, as ASDEX-Upgrade, where the theory can be checked, and in fusion reactors such as ITER and DEMO.Entanglement swapping, which is a core component of quantum network and an important platform for testing the foundation of quantum mechanics, can enable the entangling of two independent particles without direct interaction both in discrete variable and continuous variable systems. Conventionally, the realization of entanglement swapping relies on the Bell-state measurement. In particular, for entanglement swapping in continuous variable regime, such Bell-state measurement involves the optic-electro and electro-optic conversion, which limits the applications of the entanglement swapping for constructing broadband quantum network. In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate a measurement-free all-optical entanglement swapping. In our scheme, a high-gain parametric amplifier based on the four-wave mixing process is exploited to realize the function of Bell-state measurement without detection, which avoids the introduction of the optic-electro and electro-optic conversion. Our results provide an all-optical paradigm for implementing entanglement swapping and pave the way to construct a measurement-free all-optical broadband quantum network. We identify that flexural guided elastic waves in elastic pipes carry a well-defined orbital angular momentum associated with the compressional dilatational potential. This enables the transfer of elastic orbital angular momentum, that we numerically demonstrate, through the coupling of the compressional potential in a pipe to the acoustic pressure field in a surrounding fluid in contact with the pipe.Reverse micelle (RM) aggregates have a wide range of applications in various areas of science and technology. A continuous demand exists to replace interfacial surfactant molecules with various nonconventional amphiphiles. Ionic liquid (IL)-like surfactants (IL-surf's) constitute a class of such molecules that are being researched extensively. Here, we have formulated several water/IL-surf/oil microemulsions by optimizing the core droplet size with varying oil phases. The best composition of water/[BMIM][AOT]/IPM ([BMIM][AOT] 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dioctyl sulfosuccinate; IPM isopropyl myristate) was then analyzed in detail through experimental and computer simulations. Our results from DLS measurements suggest a structural transition from spherical aggregates in the parent water/[Na][AOT]/IPM solution to cylindrical droplets in the IL-surf-based system. S(-)-Propranolol molecular weight The Raman and ATR-FTIR spectral analysis suggest a variation in the microstructure of the water/oil interface due to the differential interaction of the counterions with AOT headgroups and water. Molecular dynamics simulation results provided the direct image of the interface showing a structured versus uneven water/oil interface in [Na][AOT] versus [BMIM][AOT] RMs, where the larger [BMIM] cations weakly bind with the AOT headgroups due to their low charge density. Finally, an application of this IL-surf-based formulation was tested by carrying out a Heck cross-coupling reaction that showed significantly higher yield under milder reaction conditions. The chemoselective reduction of enamides to α-amino acids with iPrOH and EtOH as H-donors and solvents catalyzed by Ru pincer complexes is demonstrated. A range of α-amino acids is synthesized in good to excellent yields. Applications, large scale, and a one-pot experiment are also reported. Finally, deuterium-labeling experiments show high regioselectivity between the α- and β-positions of the alkene unit.A chemical investigation of Streptomyces sp. Hu186 afforded two known quinone antibiotics, sarubicin A (1) and sarubicin B (2), together with three unusual variants, sarubicinols A-C (3-5), and two new 1,4-naphthoquinone metabolites, sarubicin B1 (6) and sarubicin B2 (7). Compounds 3-5 possess a rare 2-oxabicyclo [2.2.2] substructure and a benzoxazole ring system. Their structures were elucidated using 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry data. The absolute configurations of the side-chain moieties in 4 and 5 were solved by electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds 1-7 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against four tumor cell lines. We report a simple, efficient, and highly selective C-H bond insertion of copper carbenes generated in situ from 4-diazo-1,4-dihydroisoquinolin-3-ones into β-C(sp2)-H bonds of N-sulfonyl enamides, which gave a series of 4-(1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridin-3-yl)-1,4-dihydroisoquinolin-3(2H)-ones in good to excellent yields. Operationally simple and mild reaction conditions, a cheap catalyst, readily accessible starting materials, and a broad substrate scope are the merits of this reaction.Bioassay-guided fractionation in association with LC-MS and NMR detection led to the isolation of six new alkaloids, sclerotiamides C-H (1-6), from the marine gorgonian-derived fungus Aspergillus sclerotiorum LZDX-33-4. Their structures were determined from extensive spectroscopic data, including ECD data and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for configurational assignments. Sclerotiamides C (1) and D (2) are notoamide-type alkaloids with the incorporation of a unique 2,2-diaminopropane unit, and sclerotiamides E (3) and F (4) are unprecedented notoamide hybrids with a new coumarin unit. Sclerotiamide H (6) represents a new highly oxidized notoamide scaffold. Sclerotiamides C and F showed significant inhibition against a panel of tumor cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 1.6 to 7.9 μM. Sclerotiamide C induces apoptosis in HeLa cells by arresting the cell cycle, activating ROS production, and regulating apoptosis-related proteins in the MAPK signaling pathway. The present study extends the scaffold diversity of the notoamides and provides a potential lead for the development of a cytotoxic agent.
