This is coming along wonderfully! What a fabulous comparison here. I’m especially appreciating how you’re able to see things via this combination that we wouldn’t necessarily notice if only looking at one edition or the other.
You’re especially adept at these moments of analyzing the small distinctions that contribute to very different overall framings/emphases. The attention to what narrative/ story is told via each edition is fabulous.
My sense was that your ideas really developed as you went through this drafting exercise — and you might simply be backtracking now as you revise to “load in” the findings from the body so they inform everything from your introduction onwards.
I had a few questions in the margins about places where you might keep running with an idea — like the implications of focusing on the journey vs man on p. 1, if there’s a shared emphasis on Darwin being a moldable sort of blank slate across both (p. 3)? Also maybe get into the illness/quiet life of his older adulthood on p. 3? And how that further drives the focus on his earlier life as the key thing, for better or worse?
Also on your final page here I absolutely agreed with including more of that context of how Barlow continued to shape the story of Darwin’s life.
Finally, I was going to say that I think you have plenty of excellent close analyses here so don’t feel pressure to add for the sake of adding. I suspect with some more examples, esp. with Darwin’s illness in adult life, you’ll be well in that 4-6 page range. Looking forward to discussing tomorrow!
