World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
The upgrade of an item can be used to improve the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and increase other stats.
Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's stats base increase when it is upgraded. This value is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, dependent on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is due to the number of perks that need to be changed in order to upgrade an item.
It is also used to enforce gating requirements when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.
When deciding whether to buy or sell gear players can look at the level of an item. It's an indicator of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a vendor is possible using the item level.
The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, including its level. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are a few theories on how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory states that the item level is calculated by an equation that determines how valuable an item's stats really are. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different worth and that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.
This is not the only factor that affects the value of an item. The level of the area where the item was dropped can change its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher value than items dropped in lower-level instances.
Item Stats
Item stats can make or break an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." item upgrading on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods which are then increased by the player's skill.
Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a gray or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers can be upgraded many times, at higher costs.
Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can be used to give the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or decreasing cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.
Currently, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other rerolling options.
Players can upgrade an item by specific stats, or reroll attaches. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however every item is guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the range, unless it is a unique item or an item that is a God roll from a boss of a raid.
Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the attachments, or pick which stats to boost. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of these properties. It does not, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players the possibility to obtain better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the initial game run than later ones as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.
Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level of the item and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck or to boost the existing Luck of the item up to 140.
Additionally there are certain items, such as the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available in the shop or made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.
The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much success rates can be increased and the chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.
The luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases that chance by 5percent.
The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This can obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
